Valdez's salary is deferred

Featured Replies

Miami Herald

Add pitcher Ismael Valdez to the growing list of Marlins with deferred salaries. The right-hander, and likely fifth man in the rotation, signed a $1.5 million contract to pitch in 2005. But he will be paid only half that sum during the season. He will get the rest no earlier than 2006.

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez, now with the Detroit Tigers, remains on the Marlins payroll -- the result of the deferred $10 million deal he received to play for them in 2003. Pitcher Al Leiter will continue receiving payouts until 2008 from the Marlins for the $8 million contract he agreed to in December.

And it's a safe bet that Carlos Delgado's contract will be spread out well beyond the length of his contract if he ends up signing with the Marlins, who have offered him a three-year deal worth $35 million.

The Marlins are continuing discussions with Delgado's agent, David Sloane, while being wooed by the New York Mets.

As long as Valdez remains healthy and pitches with some success this coming season, he shouldn't go hungry. His contract includes bonus incentives that will pay him increasing amounts -- up to $500,000 -- depending on his number of starts.

I think delgado will go to the rangers. The mets are getting so much hype and usually players dont sign with the teams that are getting all the media hype about interest in signing someone. Look at vlade and even beltran, the teams that signed them were not really seen as frontrunners. Texas will sign delgado before january ends

The Rangers said they're not interested in Delgado.

Everybody's price jumped up this year thanks to the Mets and their signing of Kris Benson. Can anybody name a better alternative for 1.5 million or less? I like Exxon and am happy to see him back.

o ok i hadnt seen that report. Regardless i dont think hes going to sign with the mets and i dont think he'll sign with the orioles either. So i guess the marlins are the real frontunner. Mets need to get rid of floyd, and the prob with the orioles is that delgado isnt going to win in baltimore

why are we paying valdez 1.5 million?

Does anybody have a better alternative for 1.5 million for a 5th starter?

So the only reason you think the Rangers are going to sign Delgado is because they aren't a front runner? That's some, uhhh, interesting logic....

Link?

why are we paying valdez 1.5 million?

because his ERA of over 5 in two of the greatest pitchers parks in baseball and his 5 and a third innings pitched per start deem that kind of money.

i don't know; i understand very little of what our general manager does.
