Herald: Damon Disgusted with Marlins

Damon: We have 'class'

BY KEVIN BAXTER

kbaxter@herald.com

Last week, Johnny Damon and his Boston Red Sox teammates endured a two-hour bus ride through a torrential downpour, sat nearly four hours in the cramped visitor's clubhouse at Roger Dean Stadium, stood in the rain and signed a few dozen autographs, then rode back to Fort Myers without ever setting foot on a baseball field.

Suffice it to say it wasn't his most productive day of the spring.

So Damon was unhappy that the Marlins never left their spring training facility Thursday morning before a scheduled exhibition with the Red Sox was postponed a day by heavy thundershowers.

''If I had my way, they would have come on the bus and sat here until 5 o'clock,'' Damon said. ``That's exactly what they did to us. would have had the game go on.

``They started it. But that just shows you how much more class we have.''

The Marlins already were on their bus when a Red Sox representative called Jupiter and told the team to stay home. That gave some players a chance to get in a light workout.

''We didn't want to make them come over. Like they did to us,'' Boston manager Terry Francona said.

The Red Sox made their trip across the state despite the heavy rain partly because a rare sellout was expected for the March 9 game at Roger Dean Stadium. Rob Rabenecker, general manager of the stadium, said he wasn't willing to call the game before the Red Sox left because there was a possibility the weather would break long enough to get the game started.

''That's all we were hoping for,'' Rabenecker said. ``We were in contact with the weather bureau all morning. But the window never came.''

Rabenecker said decisions to cancel or postpone games at Roger Dean are made jointly by stadium officials and the teams.

FACTORS

The Red Sox's entire exhibition schedule, home and away, is sold out. Plus Thursday's St. Patrick's Day game, when the Red Sox wear green jerseys and hats, is traditionally one of the highlights of the spring. However, Francona said neither fact influenced the decision to call off Thursday's game -- nor to reschedule it for this afternoon.

''There is some revenue involved,'' he conceded.

But Francona said the front office's only consideration was how the rain would affect his team's preparation for the regular season.

''They just wanted to do what was best for us getting ready for the season,'' he said. ``Our organization treated our club with respect.''

After meeting with his players, Francona decided to use only those players who volunteered for the makeup game.

''We need the game for our pitching,'' Francona said. ``But I was not comfortable forcing guys to come in on their day off. The way I choose to handle it was, since it was a day off, we did not require anyone to come in.''

Damon, sidelined until Monday with cellulitis, will not play, nor will Edgar Renteria nor David Ortiz, the manager said. But Francona expects to use the rest of his regular lineup.

The Marlins, who have a game scheduled with the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium, will send a split squad to Fort Myers that will include right fielder Juan Encarnacion and second baseman Luis Castillo.

TOURNAMENT TIME

Francona hustled home from the ballpark to watch TV on Thursday, but said he would be following the NCAA basketball tournament rather than Boston pitcher Curt Schilling's testimony before the congressional committee investigating steroid use in baseball.

''I can listen to Schill any time I want go on and on any subject,'' he said.

Same way some people called the 2003 defending World Champions overrated.

Same way some people called the 2003 defending World Champions overrated.

714169

Which is wrong as well... Winning a World Championship negates any so called claims of being overrated. And anyone who disagrees is flat out naive or jealous.

You realize you're losing credibility here... Johnny Damon is a great player and a huge part of the Red Sox. So, I'm guessing his .304 batting average, 20 homeruns, and 94 RBI's (as a leadoff hitter) were all a fluke too ?

You may not like what the guy said, but don't talk crazy saying he sucks.

So, you're basing the Red Sox being an overrated team on your predictions?? Let's not use the facts. Let's forget that they overcame a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS vs the Yankees... Looking at those things would be plain nonsense.

How about one of those "fluke" homeruns was a grand slam, against the Yanks, in the game where this "overrated" team made the best come back in sports history.

we did the same with the cubs or did u forget that??

We didnt do that against the Cubs. We won the first game.

but we came back when everybody had the the red sux and the cubs in the world series.....they also gave us no chance against the yunkees and we beaten in 6 and it took the red sux 7 to beat them.....they my friend are OVERATED

Yeah, because coming back from a 3-0 deficit, when NO team in baseball has ever done that, is overrated. You can hate them all you want, but don't say they're overrated after what they did last year. Damn, even Yankees fans admitted that what they did was incredible. Give credit where its due.

714215

dude i get the point they did it LAST YEAR........BUt they suck and it will take them another 80 years to get another one..

Do you honestly care what Johnny Damon has to say?

I sure as hell dont care. He should be disgusted with his owner and how his owner nearly made baseball extinct in S Fla. Then turns around and buys the Red Sox for 600,000,000.00 when he is claiming to be poor.

Right. But don't say Damon's a worthless player after all he did for the Sox last year.
