Source: Schiavo's Feeding Tube Is Removed

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) - Doctors removed Terri Schiavo's feeding tube Friday despite an extraordinary, last-minute push by Republicans on Capitol Hill to use the subpoena powers of Congress to keep the severely brain-damaged woman alive, a source close to the case told The Associated Press.

good.

finally this story can end.

It won't end.

Who cares what the supreme court says, the state courts say, they, the repubs in the white house, state and national houses in particular, will fight this to no end. I will put money down for some reason, either the house or senate, on the national level, or apellate court(s), get the tube reinserted by Tuesday.

yea, there's no way it's gonna end any time soon. the republicans will pass some law and/or find some way to prolong this in court.

at this point i don't really care what happens... but if she were a family member of mine, i'd prefer her to die, despite the fact that starvation is an inhumane death.

that said, out of spite toward her husband, i want her parents to get custody of her.

I just don't get this. I thought republicans are the ones who promote state rights. There have been 12 different hearings in the state of Florida on this case, and the husband has won all 12. The Supreme Count of the US of A has said this is a personal matter within the jurisdition of the state. Yet the republicans are trying to fight this on a national level.

We have processes and laws for a reason. That is not such a hard concept to understand.

Are republicans trying to tell me that everyone needs to agree with a death before it happens. I don't think a certain republican president had everyones concent before rushing off to a certain war where I can almost gaurentee more than 1 innocent person has died.

And where were the republicans in the first 12 years of this case? They didn't appear until about 3 years ago?

Where are the republicans in all the other cases like this?

It is hypocrisy to an unhealthy degree.

Numerous court rulings have said that Terri's wishes in this situation would be to have her feeding tube removed. How is it humane to force her to live if her wishes were to be able to die in peace?

Was it not these same religous people who agrued what Kovorkian did was wrong? Did they not fight that painless, quick, death was a bad thing? Did they not fight that feeding tubes should be pulled instead because it is "the natural way"? And now they are against it?

If I was reduced to a state like that, I would prefer not to suffer through that for the rest of my life.

I'm hopeful that this story will end soon, but it looks like Congress wants to stop it from ending.

Why the hell do they care about this woman?

For the republicans because they can parlay this into something about abortion.

You don't need to be cognitively aware to be kept alive, as long as you are only recieving nutrition as life support. And that in such cases you have complete rights as an individual, that is what the right is trying to use this case for. At least that is what I think.

I'm republican, and that's stupid. There is a big difference between killing something that's going to be a human that lives for 70 years in a couple months when it's born and killing a woman that's been a vegetable for 15 years.

I just think it's ironic how conservatives support the death penalty, but are way against abortion.

Elaborate please.

But if they can get legislation passed that protects the rights of people who are not conciously aware, like Terri Schaivo is, do you not think they would immediately try and use it to protect fetuses?

Of course they would, this is politics we are talking about, and there is a reason I don't like politics. Everything every proposed or talked about has an agenda for a certain party, so therefore i'm a bitter moderate :) .

They're in favor of killing some people, but not others?

She will die of dehydration or starvation. 7 to 14 days is the expected time left unless her parents can get her to eat/drink or something changes legally getting the tube reinserted. She has lasted 6 days before. Terri is required to appear in front of Congress in 10 days.

I just think it's ironic how conservatives support the death penalty, but are way against abortion.

Ha, and it's even worse that liberals are the other way around.

I ask you, which makes more sense?

Bingo, we have a winner.

Its kind of hard to compare the abortion issue with death penalty because of the difference of the actors involved. I wouldnt necessarily head down that road.

The problem with the Schiavo thing is that the inhumanity of removing the feeding tube is being used as crutch argument for revoking her decision to die(or as her husband has proven in court through evidence that she told him she wanted to die.) Tonyi said that he would be ok with giving her something to let her die quickly. Now do you think Jeb and Terry's parents would be ok with that? Doubfully. Which is why the feeding tube issue is being used to pull at people's heartstrings. (IMO its absolutely compareable to using "defense of marriage ask a crutch to treat homosexuals as second class citizens.)

Here is what we know. Would doctors use this procedure if it caused her pain and suffering? I absolutely doubt it. I think some people are distorting the role that this feeding tube removal would cause to her to undermine the right to die principle. This is exactly why people were pissed at Million Dollar Baby. The movie dared to suggest that it was ok for people to choose to die when they were in that state. Why was that unacceptable? Because true motives are the goal.

Phishphan makes a fantastic point that is ignored. Republicans are supposed to be the party of federalism yet we have seen countless examples of a larger federal government encroaching on state's rights. Look at the new law about class action lawsuits and forcing them into federal courts. What ever happend to "we dont like big government?"

WHY do I care about this woman? Because if one judge can do this to Terri, any judge can do this to any of us. This woman's husband, scumbag that he is, wants her dead because there is a good chance that he is responsible for her being this way. He is scared to death that certain tests will be done that he has not allowed and he may be in big time trouble. The judge in this case, Judge Greer should have recused himself years ago. He also should not have allowed money that was for Terri's medical bills to be used for her husband's lawyers. There are alot of things about this whole case that stink to high heavens. Being a conservative myself, I truly believe in state's rights but in this case we have one judge overruling all because he's seems to be one sick SOB who wants to see this woman dead. Judge Greer has not done anything is Terri's best interest. He's only interested in the best interest of her philandering husband.

She is like she is because she was a bulimic and one day after purging collapsed and had a heart attack, as well as hitting her head on the way down. Becuase she was a bullimic, which she had been for a while, she had a serious chemical imbalance that doctors wrongly diagnosed. That is why her and her husband each won medical wrong doing suits. So I fail to see how her being a bulimic is his fault unless he shoved his fingers down her throat.

Why should he not have let the money be used like it was? In the state of Florida married couples are looked at as one unit. Judges tend to follow the law, and well the law was there.

That is something people seem to miss in this case. Laws exist for these same exact situations! The people who all of a sudden who don't like these laws are the same people who were against assisted suicides (or mercy killings). If they want to blame someone for pulling a feeding tube being the only way out they need to look in the mirror.

12 times the state of Florida has ruled Terri's wishes are to pass on in peace, and it is sickening that in light of that the republicans are facing her to stay alive. The Florida supreme court as well as the US Supreme court agree. Yet, republicans fight to keep her alive against her wishes and that is sickening.

Not all liberals are in favor of abortion. I figured you would realize that by now.

The story about the her husband being abusive & all that garbage is such a bunch of crap... Even if it were true, he could be a boy scout troop leader and the mayor of the local town and the leader of the church choir, it wouldn't make any difference. The people protesting this don't care if her husband has a videotape of her wishes regarding this situation, or if she has a living will, or that he did or didn't mistreat her. Terry herself could scribble "pull the plug please" & they still wouldn't accept it. They don't like anything that sniffs of euthanaisa, & that's that. All this other stuff's just smoke & mirrors.
