July 20, 200322 yr ...after all the crap I took this week about getting a couple of more arms, I guess this series showed we don't any help in the bullpen, and we certainly don't need another bat in the lineup. 16 runs scored against us today, we score two runs in two days. Let's just stay with the team we have now and not rock the boat. :banghead
July 20, 200322 yr we are adding a bat Monday..... his name is Mike Lowell but yea, a LF would be nice
July 21, 200322 yr I don't see how an extra arm would've made any difference against the Cubs. Yeah the pen's not great, but it's not as if it's been the difference between wins and losses lately. The bullpen barely factored in Friday's game. We were up what, 6 runs already in the 8th? Saturday the pitching was fine, and Sunday Willis lost the game. If you want another bat I can't argue with that...
July 21, 200322 yr by the way, the only 2 runs we scored on sunday's game were driven in by our left fielder/third baseman.
July 21, 200322 yr we are adding a bat Monday..... his name is Mike Lowell but yea, a LF would be nice Are you sure Lowell is good to go today?
July 21, 200322 yr no im not, but they said he may be back today.... but he should be back in the clubhouse atleast!
July 21, 200322 yr Author It became obvious to me when we played the Cubs in Chicago that our team was undersized and without enough arms to make a real run at something. Say what you will about Burnnitz (defensively he's bum but he's got a big bat), and I am loathe to trade with the Mets for a whole lot of reasons, give the Dodgers credit for going out there and getting a bat. And Ricky too. I don't think we need a bat, I think we need a couple, and a couple of arms too, maybe three. In a perfect world, Phelps is your mopup guy, Pavano your seventh inning guy, spelling Urbina if he's pitched too many days in a row, and your emergency starter. Tejera and Almanza have to go, if for no other reason than to free up their roster spots. So does Andy Fox. If you agree with me that you have to keep Cabrera for a whole variety of reasons, he can now play three positions either well or adequately (LF, 3rd, SS) for one, you trade or release Andy Fox and get a BAT OFF THE BENCH! Having a bat off the bench is bigtime important if we want to make a run. I think we need to make a blockbuster, multiplayer trade and make it quickly. I keep going back to the Orioles, again for a whole variety of reasons. Here's a deal worth considering, its purely fantasy, but I believe it helps Baltimore as much as it does us. They are going to lose Ponson. And my usual caveat, this is one man's delusional fantasy trade. You ideas are just as valid. You may not like it at all. I do, that's why I'm writing this post. I would trade Lee (arb eligible $6.5-7 mil in 2004), Penny (arb eligible $3.5 mil range)and Encarncion (free agent) and an AA/AAA prospect for Conine (signed through 2004), Jason Johnson (free agent), Gibbons (makes $375k) and Ligtenberg ($1.2 mil, FA). A trade like this would trade equal starters, more consistent muscle at first, pickup a terrific reliever and a LEFT HANDED POWER BAT in RF. We would want some assurances at least one or both Ligtenberg and Johnson are ammenable to staying longer term. With the money saved on Derrick Lee, whose swing seems perfectly matched for Camden Yards and Gibbons for Encarncion, we should have no problem signing both pitchers for at least another year and have money towards signing Lowell or some other purpose. Comments?
July 21, 200322 yr I'd just like to add that I am sick and tired of seeing Andy Fox CRUSH weak dribblers to the pitcher. Good glove and all but cmon! Swing it like a MAN already! :angry
July 21, 200322 yr I want to see Abraham Nunez get a chance. He could be our utility guy he can play the outfield and middle infield.
July 21, 200322 yr A new big bat would be nice, no doubt, but not really needed as much as you believe. And we DO need a new arm in the bullpen, dispite acquiring Uggy, but not in the rotation. The rotation was amazing in this series (besides Dontrelle suprisingly). They made Mark and Brad look like 5 time Cy Young Winners...
July 21, 200322 yr Well I give you credit for doing some homework on it... The Lee-Encarnacion for Conine-Gibbons part would save us some dough, no question. Plus still provide solid offense. Not sure why you'd want to swap Penny for Jason Johnson though, I think that's probably a downgrade. (yes I realize he's having a solid year) Although I guess you'd get Kerry L back in the deal too.... Interesting. :shifty
July 21, 200322 yr But he says we need a big bat. So we go and trade Lee and Encarnacion for Conine and a pitcher?
July 21, 200322 yr Author I'm not taking anything away from Brad penny, his last two starts have been terrific. You have to give something to get something is how deals get done, and I think it's a long way between now and September. You never know who might get hurt. But in the end, you have your opinion and I have mne. I do suggest though, you check out the stats and news on how the Baltimore players are doing before you discard the notion of such a trade. I'm guessing you'll like what you see. BTW Wild, 3,839 posts, I have to say I'm impressed :thumbup
July 21, 200322 yr BTW Wild, 3,839 posts, I have to say I'm impressed :thumbup It's summer time, nobody lives near me, and I have no ride during the day time. What else am I supposed to do!? :lol
July 21, 200322 yr I just thought of something, with the Rockies slipping out of wild card contention, they might become sellers. I wonder if they will be looking to trade Admin Walker. We could give them prospects and they might be willing to eat some of his salary.

July 21, 200322 yr some thoughts.... Encarnacion isnt a free agent, he is arb eligible... Wild Card, the trade proposed by Marlins 2003 involved Jay Gibbons too, nonetheless i really dont want to mess around with this team except in LF Admin Walker has a no trade clause
July 21, 200322 yr nonetheless i really dont want to mess around with this team except in LF I agree... Don't mess with a good thing, unless it's not that good. Cabs will be GREAT, just not now. Too much of a liability. If we don't make a trade, I don't mind him out there, he's clutch like a mofo. :w00t But I'd rather have Guillen out there. :shifty

Johnson and Penny at certainly equals. Conine and Lee? Conine won't embarrass you at first and is a steadier hitter at a lower cost vs Lee's homeruns in CY, extraordinary defensive skills and youth but at a higher pricetag. Juan is a better defensive outfielder with a good bat vs a lefty power hitter. And then theres Ligtenberg. Oh well, I'm starting to sound like broken record. BTW, I checked and you're right Juan is arb eligible, my mistake. Obviously you don't find any value in such a trade. surprised the heck out of me. What would you do improve the club then? I'm curious.
July 21, 200322 yr Marlins2003, I don't like that trade, either. Juan Enc is really our best hitter from the OF. And I still want Lee over Conine. And you can't argue that Johnson's stuff is as good as Penny's. Maybe the stats, but not the stuff. The stuff leads to better stats. Not many pitchers have a 12-6 curve and a 95+ fastball to go with it.

Comments? Actually burnitz is a very good fielder.
