Lefties with pop

Featured Replies

Right now our two most glaring holes are a lack of a productive left fielder and a lack of a lefty hitter with pop. With that in mind, here's some players who would be extremely helpful for the stretch run...

John Vander Wal - He's solid and cheap. He only makes 550k this season and has an OPS of .869 (.906 vs. righties). Picking him up would be an extremely smart move.

Frank Catalanotto - Another relatively cheap lefty with pop. However, he makes more money than Vander Wal (2.2 mil) and has a lower OPS (.793 overall, .835 vs righties). Between him and Vander Wal, Vander Wal would be the better choice, but if Catalanotto could be had cheaply, then it's a good move. Toronto is 7.5 games out and will probably concede the wild card very soon.

Ryan Klesko - He's been solid all year, with an OPS of .873 (.952 vs righties). He's making $5.5 mil this season and will make even more next season, so he's a bit pricey, but if San Diego is willing to eat part of his salary, he'd be a good acquisition.

JD Drew - For whatever reason, the Cards seem to always be looking to trade this guy. His overall OPS this season is .902, vs righties it's .973. The knock on him has always been that he gets injured easily. But he's not injured now and is playing great. He's played RF most of his career but does have experience in left.

I think the Fish should wait until the 3-game series with Philly before making any decisions. If we win that series and are 2 to 3 games within the wild card, then deal for a lefty power bat. If we fall 6 or 7 games back, I don't think it's worth it.

out of all those i rather have JD Drew he costes the less $$ and can play LF...Ryan will not come here cuz he wants to play 1B.. not ganna happened we got DLee!

Vanderwal: Role player at best... Don't let his grand slam from the other day get you all hot and bothered.... I wouldn't consider him "power". Wouldn't even be the most powerful bat on the Marlins' bench.

The Cat: For 2.2 mil you should be able to sign Catalanatto's whole family. Yet another role player. And I don't think the Blue Jobs consider themselves out of the WC yet.

Klesko: Yeah, right after Loria wins the lotto beinfest will give a call out to SD. Too expensive and is the only reason the Pads are even considered a team.

Drew: When he's not on the DL he's either playing injured or hurt . Missed alot of time earlier this year. I don't think his contract is sitting on the clearance shelf either, by the way.

I've always liked Drew. He has big time ability, but probably wont put it all together until late in his career. La Russa never uses him correctly in my opinion. And injury has cost him. I dont think the Cards are shopping him though, the Cards do need pitching though (Morris just went down). But that doesnt mean they will trade Drew to get that, and we probably dont have enough to trade for Drew at this point, or at least I am not comfortable trading away our big prospects down on the AA and lower levels. Unless an unbelievable deal comes along, I dont see us doing much of anything right now. That is fine with me.

vander wals grand slam doesnt change my mind of him at all.

get this through your mind if we do get a lefty it will not be a brian giles/ ryan klesko caliber player. so just get that out of your mind vander wal is our best bet next to jose guilen, but how much money does guillen make?

I doubt THe Cards will trade Drew to A Wildcard contender unless it's for young pitching.

I'm guessing The Cards would accept a deal of young pitchers to improve their farm system. Something they need...

nowhere near as happy....

cheaper and better is Guillen

and i dont think a LEFTY is a must..... just a solid hitter is fine

St. Louis needs P now, not P prospects for later. No dice with them unless you package up good starting P.

Not ganna happin.... Wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.

No way we deal for Drew. They'd want one major league pitcher (like Penny) plus 1-2 pitching prospects. Not worth it.

I like Vander Wal, hes cheap and experienced. He wouldn't put us over the top but he'd be a nice addition. Probably could be had for a couple of midlevel prospects.

Guillen is probably the best but I think it would take too much to get him. One more trade like the Rangers deal and our farm system would look alot worse.

I think we're in pretty good shape right now as long as everyone stays healthy. We don't need a Brian Giles caliber player in left, just someone who can give a solid contribution every night. I think we'll be fine with Hollandsworth and Cabs, but adding Vander Wal for a lower prospects would be nice if for nothing else than morale.

Well I the Fish make a run at Guillen but Vander Wal will be ok if the price for Guillen is too high.

Rondell would be best fit...followed by Guillen...followed by VanderWal

i'd be the most happy with vander wal

What for? Pinch-hitter, right? Because he is not an everyday player. The Yankees got him last year for that sole purpose and look what happened: he warmed the bench the entire year. He is a great pinch-hitter, period. But that's about it.

Vanderwal is about equal to Hollandsworth.

Yea Rondell is the Perfect fit wit a combo of speed and power.
