I mean we consume and die and hence feed the earth and we keep other creatures in check. But youre absolutley right. We also developed the ability to think beyond our basic capibilities and that might have been the direction towards destruction. Let me ask you this..is it humans per se or those humans who undertook the concept of individualism? I mean compare the native Americans who were here before the arrival of the Europeans. The plains Indians consumed the Buffalo but they understood how the balance worked. Then come these people with this idea that the Buffalo is meant for more than utility..its meant for selfish vanity..and that destroyed so much. Some animals seem to display characteristics of what we may consider greed while others dont? Is it human nature to be individualistic? If you say no back it up. Marx was unable to do so. April 13, 200521 yr Perhaps the greatest advantage that native Americans and historically small tribes all over the world had was the ability to operate in small groups hence making communal interaction with mother nature more easily imposed. You could say the old American farmer knew how to maintain the integrity of the land and cooperate with each other. One of the concepts in Discourse on Inequality is that vanity is what destroyed us. Vanity is greatly linked to greed and the larger the society, the greater the desire to be relativley better and hence the greater the greed. So yes, it would seem individualism is a dormant trait in us all.
