Dontrelle Willis has been untouchable after two starts.

The Marlins dynamic right-hander attempts to notch his third shutout in as many starts as Florida opens a three-game series against the first place Washington Nationals at RFK Stadium.

Willis has pitched 18 scoreless innings to start the season, striking out 10 and walking two over that span. He is just 6 2-3 innings short of the franchise record for scoreless innings by a starter, set by Pat Rapp in 1995.

The 23-year-old hurler held the Philadelphia Phillies to three hits and struck out seven to earn a 4-0 win in his last start on Wednesday.

``I was going to leave everything out on the field,'' Willis said after pitching his fourth career shutout. ``You want to end the game, but at the same time you want to focus on what you did to get to the ninth inning. You don't want to overdo anything.''

Willis is becoming familiar with the demands of going the distance -- he beat Washington with a five-hit, 9-0 shutout win over the Nationals last Friday.

Marlins starters have thrown five complete games this season. Willis and A.J. Burnett each have two and Josh Beckett the other.

Burnett pitched a four-hitter for his second straight complete game to lead Florida to a 5-2 victory over the streaking New York Mets on Sunday.

The Marlins showed signs of emerging from their offensive funk, getting nine hits -- eight singles -- in avoiding their first three-game losing streak of the season. They scratched out more runs than they scored in the first two games of the series (three).

Washington has scored plenty of runs during a five-game winning streak.

A 7-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday completed a sweep of the three-game series and improved the Nationals' NL East-leading record to 8-4.

``We have to chip away and do the little things to get a run in,'' Washington manager Frank Robinson said. ``Right now we're doing a lot of things right.''

Eight starters produced at least one hit, only slumping Cristian Guzman didn't, but even he contributed an RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Four players drove in runs.

The crowd of 35,463 followed those of 45,596 for the home opener Thursday, and 34,943 on Saturday. That's 116,002 for three games -- or more than one-seventh of what the franchise totaled for 81 home dates in Montreal and Puerto Rico last season.

``It certainly is nice to see that many people in the stands and rooting for you,'' Robinson said. ``It makes you understand you have a home crowd behind you.''

ESPN Alt. will have the game. I have cable now so I won't be able to see it, but those with DISH and DirecTV will see it.
