FreshFish
The Florida Marlins have to go up to the Florida Senate for their final vote to get a tax rebate for their new stadium. Without this tax rebate the Marlins may no longer exist in South Florida since Dolphins Stadium has refused to re-sign the Marlins lease after 2010. This means after 2010 the Marlins will no longer have a venue to play in if this new stadium is not built. A bunch of fans are gathering across the street from the Marlins store on SW 37th Ave. and 8th Street to show how they support the stadium and they want their senators to support it too. They will be there on Friday from 10 - 11 am. Go by and show your support...Make signs...get CRAZY... Next week the Florida Senate will be voting on this. Please call your local senators and let them know you are a citizen of Miami-Dade County and are in favor of a new stadium. Make your voice heard. To make life easy, below is a list of the senators in Miami-Dade and Broward county. And your voter's registration card it tells you your district number for state senate. Call them, e-mail them, send them letters, let them know what you think. Miami-Dade County State Senators Senator Larcenia J. I can't see how the Senate not vote on this, after a blow out vote from the House (90 Y - 26 N). However, Tom Lee is doing everything in its power to delay any kind of vote. I heard 5/3 and 5/4 as the dates the vote may come. That only leave a couple of days for the Governor to put its final stamp.
FreshFish
Also, it doesn't help that our own Senator (like Diaz de la Portilla) are showing the middle finger to South Florida and is not supporting or pushing for the bill to be heard. My faith is in the Central Florida senators and other looking to get the bill approved for the NASCAR and MAgics, we are currently riding on the same bus. Legislators often amend proposed legislation they don't like by adding a bunch of other expenditures to make it fiscally unpalatable. Still, let's get this done! *crosses fingers* :clapping

CapeFish
Descarga Deportiva will be live from Tallahassee on Tuesday and Wednesday to cover the expected Senate vote. The show will also grow an extra hour for those days. http://www.DescargaDeportiva.com/ From http://www.descargadeportiva.com/news.html We need your support in the sales tax rebate for the stadium for Miami Dade County. We have always been there for you and supported you in every way. When you were here a couple of months ago, we helped you by voting "NO" to the casinos in the parimutuels. We need you NOW. Miami-Dade county helped elect you and President George W. Bush. The stadium will generate more than enough revenue to add to the sales tax that the state collects. If only the same amount of people go to the new stadium that attended last year, about 2.5 million, based on an average expenditure of $35.00 per person (A VERY LOW ESTIMATE,WHEN YOU CONSIDER A TICKET, PARKING, FOOD & DRINK, SOUVENIRS, SHIRTS, BALLS, ETC), the stadium ALONE will generate $6,652,500 in sales tax revenue for the state. Once you add the revenues generated by additional events that can be held at this county-owned facility, the number gets even bigger. It is a WIN-WIN situation for everyone. The impact on the the restaurant and businesses in the surrounding area and neighborhood will also generate new revenues for both the county and the state. In addition, the pride, the goodwill and intangible benefits that a successful team such as the Marlins brings the community and the entire state cannot be easily measured. Please help all the citizens of Miami-Dade County and approve the sales tax rebate. It is good business for everyone. If I can give a rebate of $2.00 and get back over $6.65, I will do that every day of the week. This is NOT a matter of public funds being used for private entities. The stadium will be owned by the citizens of Miami-Dade County. Please do not fail us now. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT OF THE STADIUM FOR MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. prinmemito
Cape, where is that quote from? By the way, now that you've clarified who has the higher ranking in the Senate, I am more optimistic that it will pass. If the Majority Leader supports it, there is a good chance it will pass. CapeFish
The quote is from http://www.descargadeportiva.com/news.html Lee can still kill it in committee, but he won't do it as he is a hands-off President. Lee doesn't lead, follow, or get out of the damn way. That is why he constantly bickers with our very active governor.
Madman81
I have no problem if Loria desides to move the team should he not get a stadium. There are plenty of stadiums, I believe, that are entirely publically funded. Loria is willing to kick in a large sum, yet it might not be enough? I have no problem with him saying piss on this place, if that's what it comes to.
prinmemito
Cape, have you heard anything new?
CapeFish
No, voting coming up this week. However, there should be a clarification of two things. 1) There is a stadium bill in the Ways and Means Committee 2) There is the Houe Stadium Bill that is not likely to pass. Do you think it will be difficult for the House and Senate to reconcile the bills if that is the case?
CapeFish
I believe it would be easier to reconcile if it was the Senate bill.
Guest Moneyball
Breaking News: They just did a report on the stadium on Univision 23 and one of the Sens (didn't get his name) said the Marlins have 23 votes FOR the ballpark so far. They also interviewed a senator which sadly I didn't get his name who has not decided. Hopefully someone here got the name so we can bombard him with emails. CapeFish
Thank you for the news. Univision has an interest in this passing as the Marlins are a cash cow for their radio station WQBA. They report well. I will search for the clip.
