Stadium Update

Recommended Posts

coverage of today's positive developments has been lacking. The media is terrible, they have an agenda to kill this and that will not happen!

Not on spanish radio. 'La Descarga Deportiva' on 670AM had a full hour on it today, Manny Diaz and a couple of reps and one Senator supporting this went on the air and said it was a HUGE day and things are looking very very positive. They are expecting this to pass the house with at least 80 votes and they think the pressure is there to pass the Senate by Friday. Jeb Bush should seal it by next week.

Many Diaz and everyone else sounded very very upbeat.

The radio hosts slammed Diaz de La Portilla for not providing a reasonable reason for being against the bill. The major hurdle was passing with the 3-2 vote.

I'm very positive about this :thumbup

Spanish radio discusses the stadium a lot more than people expect. I would guess at least 3 times a week they speak about the park.

They speak about it daily. You would be surprise at how many people call about the stadium. a lot of people are calling pissed about Diaz de La Portilla.

Tax break for Marlins stadium gains ground in state House

By Linda Kleindienst And Mark Hollis

Tallahassee Bureau

Posted April 26 2005, 8:31 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE -- Miami-Dade County's quest for state help with a new $420 million Florida Marlins ballpark got a boost from the state House on Tuesday, winning preliminary approval in a bill that also sets aside money for Fort Lauderdale to improve its spring training facility for the Baltimore Orioles.

It was a dramatic turn around for the stadium proposal, which had been blocked - and already pronounced dead - by House Finance and Tax Committee Chairman Fred Brummer.

But Miami-Dade Republicans used their collective political muscle in both houses of the Legislature to move the $60 million tax break ahead, hoping to win final approval by the session's scheduled May 6 adjournment.

In the House, Procedural Chairman Marco Rubio of Miami, who is slated to become House speaker in late 2006, tacked the Marlins amendment onto an economic development bill aimed at helping county convention centers. The same amendment calls for the state to help four cities, among them Fort Lauderdale, refurbish spring training facilities.

Almost simultaneously, a key Senate committee agreed by a one-vote margin to keep the stadium alive with a likely caveat that the team keep its name as the Florida Marlins and not change to the Miami Marlins.

"If the money is that important, maybe it shouldn't be left to doubt?that it should be known forever more as the Florida Marlins," said Sen. Skip Campbell, D-Fort Lauderdale, a Marlins fan. He voted to get the measure out of committee with assurances from Senate Majority Leader Alex Villalobos of Miami that the name change issue would be considered by the full Senate.

Now in its fourth try, this is the farthest the stadium proposal has come in the legislative process. Previously it was the team asking for the $2 million a year, 30-year tax break. This year it was the county, city of Miami and the team that presented a financing package to the state.

The county and city have estimated that a new ballpark next to the Orange Bowl would raise $8 million of new sales tax revenue a year.

"If this amendment is not approved and, God forbid, this team would leave this great state, we would have nothing," said Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, a prime sponsor of the House measure.

Opponents accuse the team of double-dipping. In 1993, H. Wayne Huizenga got the same tax break when he owned the Marlins to help remodel then-Joe Robbie Stadium to accommodate baseball. The team is now owned by Jeffrey Loria and has a lease at Dolphins Stadium that expires in 2010.

"This is all trumped up to get the second $60 million," said Rep. Susan Bucher, D-West Palm Beach. "What precludes all the other teams from coming back for their second $60 million?"

But House Tourism Chairwoman Nancy Detert, R-Venice, said help for the teams will spur economic development and tourism.

"I feel real uncomfortable standing up defending more money for sports teams," she conceded. "However, tourism is our number one issue. Florida is in the glamour business. It's what we do."

Rubio's amendment won on a voice vote.

"It's a good day so far?I'm optimistic," said a smiling Miami Mayor Manny Diaz as he left the House gallery.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa agreed the state has a right to be heard on the name change issue and said she would bring it up with fellow commissioners.

"We need to come together and talk," she said. "We mainly want to keep the franchise in Miami and in the state."

The Marlins had no comment on the name change. Under a non-binding agreement the team signed with the city and county, the name would only be changed if the two local governments requested it.

Just got a call that Michael Putney just reported on it on tv... de la Portilla voted against it and it still got through the committee. Members of the House attached the bill to some other popular bill that is expected to pass. The Senate is still the biggest opponent.

So we're a rider now? Brilliant!

btw, Alex Diaz de la Portilla is not getting re-elected. Book it

Oh he's done. We want our stadium, and we want it now. Heads will roll!

Hey everyone...today is a VERY important day concerning the Marlins stadium...I really don't know how to emphasize it enough...

The House sub-committee will be voting on the stadium this morning and in the afternoon, the Senate Sub- Committee will be voting....

But the Marlins need your help.

As I know that you are ALL aware, the Senate is our hardest opposition and there's a Senator from Miami that's actually iffy about voting in favor of the stadium. The Senate Sub-Committee is made up of SIX (6) senators so EVERY vote is important. Senator Alex de la Portilla is the one that is not exactly content with the stadium.

So I need some help from ya'll.....

send him some e-mails or leave him messages up in Tallahassee. You guys want the stadium, then help the team out. The team needs all the support they can get right now.

I bet this was someone from the Marlins Front Office. :lol

You never know who is on here....

But thanks to everyone for your help...

the battle isn't over yet...

we still have the House to go through (The whole house voting on it)...Tomorrow (Thursday) is another big day so continue checking up for news....and maybe some more help....

Thank you guys!

The Florida Marlins have to go up to the Florida Senate for their final vote to get a tax rebate for their new stadium. Without this tax rebate the Marlins may no longer exist in South Florida since Dolphins Stadium has refused to re-sign the Marlins lease after 2010. This means after 2010 the Marlins will no longer have a venue to play in if this new stadium is not built.

A bunch of fans are gathering across the street from the Marlins store on SW 37th Ave. and 8th Street to show how they support the stadium and they want their

senators to support it too. They will be there on Friday from 10 - 11 am. Go by and show your support...Make signs...get CRAZY...

Next week the Florida Senate will be voting on this. Please call your local senators and let them know you are a citizen of Miami-Dade County and are in favor of

a new stadium. Make your voice heard. To make life easy, below is a list of the senators in Miami-Dade and Broward county. And your voter's registration card it tells you your district number for state senate. Call them, e-mail them, send them letters, let them know what you think.

A shot at Brummer.. too funny. Gotta love the Orlando Sentinel.

EDITORIAL

A vision to build on

Our position: The Florida House took a sensible and fair approach in OK'ing money for arena.

Posted April 28, 2005

State Rep. Fred Brummer may not want Orange County to derive a direct benefit from the sales taxes it generates. Fortunately, others in the House of Representatives aren't so utterly lacking vision.

A measure that would secure Orlando's ability to recoup some $60 million in sales-tax revenue generated by the Orlando Magic to refurbish the arena was approved by the full House on Wednesday -- despite Mr. Brummer's incessant grumbling.

He thinks it's a tax break for the wealthy owners of professional-sports teams. But that sort of blissful political ignorance ignores the fact that the city of Orlando owns the arena and would benefit from any improvements. It ignores the fact that every other community that hosts an eligible professional-sports team has received the tax rebate in years past. And it ignores the fact that those sales-tax dollars would otherwise be spent in other parts of the state if they weren't earmarked for Central Florida.

Perhaps that's what Mr. Brummer wants for this community: to have local tax dollars sucked into the Tallahassee vacuum for lawmakers to dispense as they so choose. Usually, that involves taking care of special-interest groups that finance political campaigns.

Certainly, that's not in the region's best interest. And quite fortunately, it's not how other responsible state leaders view their role.

With Mr. Brummer now an irrelevant sideshow in the House, the rest of Central Florida's legislative delegation should turn its attention to the Senate -- to ensure that this worthwhile bill becomes law.
