July 25, 200323 yr As you all know Baseball is phasing in a major revenue sharing plan, with increases every season. But since the Padres are getting a new ballpark, they go from receiving to paying. With one less team to share the pot, the Marlins will recieve more money for 2004. This season we are receiving about $20 Million, with the Padres going to giving instead of receiving, we may go up to $25 million. Even though the Marlins spend more money than they are given in revenue sharing, it will mean that Loria may put another $5 million of his money into the pot and we may see a payroll increase of $10 million over this season's payroll.

July 25, 200323 yr i must be missing something.... all i see is an increase in total revenue sharing pool from 230 to 243 million next year. only 13 million to split between all the receiving teams, how do we get 5 million of that? If I remember correctly though, we got about 3 million this year, so if it were 4 or 5 next year that would probably make sense.

Anyway, The main thing I want to point out is one of the major facts that the Player's Union hammered away on during the last CBA. Owners are under no obligation to reinvest revenue-sharing proceeds, nor are they obligated to do the same with any disbursements from the newly implemented "luxury (yankee) tax". They have just as much right to pocket the money rather than spend it on payroll, stadiums or any other aspect of the franchise. Now, I know that the MLBPA are lower than herpes-infested mucus on the bottom of a public toilet, but it's a valid point nonetheless. And, I'm not saying that Loria would or wouldn't re-invest, just pointing out a fact.

Even if you give him somewhat of a benefit of the doubt, there is no way to hold MLB or the individual franchises accountable to ensure they re-invest.

NEVER trust Bud Selig on anything related to finance. Anyone remember the "we're losing billions" debacle? Fortune magazine then showed that in fact, baseball is still earning money, rather than Selig's claim that they were losing dollars.
