The Phillies never had a chance.

They never had a chance against Florida Marlins lefthander Dontrelle Willis, who hasn't allowed an earned run in two starts against the Phillies this season. They never had a chance to hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, either. There were three rain delays that totaled 3 hours, 57 minutes before last night's 2-1 loss was called after 51/2 innings.

"They said the field was too wet," manager Charlie Manuel said. "There was water standing on the infield. It wasn't playable."

The start was delayed 1 hour, 1 minute before a 45-minute delay in the bottom of fifth inning.

There was a 2:11 delay in the middle of the sixth.

"They rushed us back onto the field," Manuel said of the second delay. "And then it rained again. Then we hung around. We didn't get a crack at them. Once we got Dontrelle Willis out of there, hell, we were going to have a good chance against them."

Maybe.

Maybe not.

The Phillies entered last night having scored just 92 runs in April, which ranked 14th in the National League. They had hit just .233 with runners in scoring position, which ranked 12th. They had hit just 17 home runs, which tied for 12th. They had left 185 runners on base, which ranked second.

That's a big reason why the Phils finished the month 10-14 and last in the NL East. They managed just three hits and one unearned run in five innings against Willis, who threw a shutout against them April 13 in Miami.

In nine career starts against the Phillies, Willis is 4-1 with a 2.24 ERA.

But at least the Phillies, who lost first baseman Jim Thome in the fourth because of back spasms, catch a much-needed break today, right?

Nope. They will face Marlins righthander Josh Beckett this afternoon as they try to avoid a series sweep. Beckett is 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA. The Phillies then face Mets righthander Pedro Martinez (2-1, 2.75 ERA) tomorrow night at Shea Stadium.

Gulp.

The Phillies wasted Vicente Padilla's best performance of the season, although after his first two, he couldn't have been much worse.

In five innings, Padilla allowed two hits, two runs and three walks with one strikeout. He allowed both runs in the second as the Marlins took a 2-0 lead. He walked catcher Paul Lo Duca with one out. Third baseman Mike Lowell followed with a double to right to put runners on second and third. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez then singled up the middle to score both runs.

After Gonzalez's single, Padilla didn't allow another hit. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.

Quite an improvement: Padilla (0-3) had been rocked in his first two starts for 12 runs in just six innings of work.

But with the way the Phils have been hitting, the Marlins felt as if those two runs would be more than enough, especially with the way Willis (5-0) has pitched this season.

They were.

The Phillies scored in the fourth to make it a 2-1 game.

Leftfielder Pat Burrell worked a walk to start the inning. Thome hit a grounder through Gonzalez's legs to put runners on first and third.

With one out, catcher Mike Lieberthal then hit a grounder to third. It looked like a double play, but Lieberthal beat the throw to first to score Burrell.

More important than the run is that Thome came up lame after he slid into second. He actually tweaked his back on his swing and said it felt the same as it had in the spring, when he missed more than a week of action.

there will be more if i can get it done before leavin for the Sixers game.

Josh Beckett has done his part to make the Florida Marlins' pitching staff the best in baseball.

He'll look to turn in another strong outing as the Marlins wrap up a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Beckett earned his fourth win of the season Tuesday, allowing two earned runs and eight hits in six innings of a 9-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He is tied for second in the majors in wins behind teammate Dontrelle Willis, who became the majors' first five-game winner with Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Phillies.

Florida starter A.J. Burnett has won three games and owns a 2.43 ERA, and the Marlins entered Saturday with a 2.34 team ERA, the best in the majors.

Beckett has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his five starts this season, including an 8-0 shutout of Washington on April 10. He trailed 3-0 after two innings Tuesday, but settled down thereafter.

``I was very pleased with the way he stayed within himself and didn't get flustered,'' Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. ``He battled himself out of a couple of other jams. After that it was clear sailing with him.''

Alex Gonzalez singled in both of Florida's runs Saturday, as the Marlins won their third straight. The game was delayed 61 minutes at the start, another 45 minutes during the bottom of the fifth inning and was stopped after a delay of 2 hours, 12 minutes following the top of the sixth.

Mike Lieberthal drove in the only run for Philadelphia, which has lost eight of 11. Slugger Jim Thome left the game after four innings because of lower back spasms.
