With Mecir, Jones and Bump there's a decent core to work off of. 762840 Someone like Baez has a 3.83 ERA, 63 saves and 309 strikeouts in the 3 years he has been pitching. Mota will dream with having those numbers. Valdez is a starting pitcher and Sponeeybarger had a setback a few weeks ago. Mecir cannot pitch more than one inning and cannot warm up more than once in a game; he will retire at the end of the year if he makes it that far. Jones is holding his ground as a closer, but that's just it. Bump is pitching pretty good, I give you that. Then you have Crowell and Travis Smith, look at the numbers and they will speak for themselves. Someone like Baez you said? YOU GOTTA BE JOKING!!! I will trade Willingham, Stokes and/or Dillo (or a combination with somebody else) for "someone like Baez" any given day... :lol :lol :lol
May 4, 200521 yr What's so funny? You guys act like we need 6, err, 7 shutdown relievers. There are many teams that do very well with journeymen middle relievers. If you'd get your head out your a** you'd realize that. And maybe if the offense lived up to its talent, we wouldn't have to worry about the stinking 'pen so much.
May 4, 200521 yr i wouldnt exactly say that willingham is 'more than ready' for the bigs. he didnt light the grapefruit league on fire and I dont think he is lighting the Pacific Coast League on fire neither. Some of you people need to realize how baseball operates. Personally, I dont want Baez becuase I just dont trust him. Dotel would be a good option, but only for the 7th and 8th inning. In the 9th inning he fades like bright colors in the sun. Todd Jones will be fine as the closer for the time being.
May 4, 200521 yr I think Jones can hold it down until Mota comes back. It's only like 3 weeks. Use him & Mecir if needed. The problem for me isn't the lack of a closer now, it's the lack of depth. With Alfie & Mota gone... and Moehler and Leiter not piching deep into games, the pen could get a little dicey. Travis Smith for example coming into the game tonight when the Marlins were still within striking distance...

May 4, 200521 yr Without saying whether I think DB would be a good fit here, it's inconceivable to me that the Rays would be interested in anything other than bonafide MLers in exchange. They need help NOW (as in "can you be here by gametime tonight?"), not in 2006, 2007. If the Marlins were to wind up with DB my guess is it would be through a three team trade that sent prospects somewhere else and the third party sending the Rays the player(s) they need.

May 4, 200521 yr you guys are panicing too quickly our pen will be fine. Mota will be fine once he comes back and all the pitchers in the pen that started the season with us have been great. It's guys that have come off the DL or from AAA like Riedling, Smith and Crowell who have struggled. Those guys won't be with us for much longer, plus we have better arms in the minors such as Messenger, JB Miadich, and Mike Flannery. I can't believe some of you are talking about trading Willingham or even Olsen for Baez, who would be a significant downgrade to Mota and would probably act as nothing more than a middle reliever for us.
May 6, 200521 yr Honestly I think we should just wait until Mota comes back everything will be fine. Some of us are jumping the gun kinda fast. We are still tied for first. We need to worry about Lowell more than the Bull Pen
May 6, 200521 yr I'd only want Danny Baez in a situation like this: Marlins get: Danny Baez Alex Rodriguez Devil Rays get: Randy Johnson Yankees get: Darren Oliver
May 6, 200521 yr Author Just to clear a few things, I was not "jumping the gun" on the bullpen when I started this topic. I just thought that Baez would add more depth to the bullpen and a source of healthy competition for Mota when he gets back. That's all...
May 6, 200521 yr Chewbacca what planet exactly are you from. How much seating dow A-Rod hold because we would have to play our games in him. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Would be nice if he gave up half his contract or if the Rangers would continue to pay his contract.
May 6, 200521 yr No I am just saying would be nice. With Lowell not producing I know it would never ever ever ever ever ever happen.

That's all... 764505 My apologies for reading too much into your post then. I think the Marlins' bullpen are suited well for the remainder of the season. Injuries have hit hard and made the 'pen a litle light over the next few weeks, but it's not the time to make a trade for an arm. Our 5th option in the bullpen is Nate Bump (that is supposed to be a compliment). 5th, one or two spots removed from the mop-up role. It's one of the reasons I'm not ready to push Chris Resop or Logan Kensing yet. The innings won't be there in a month. Heck, with the strong starting pitching and light schedule, the innings are barely there now. By mid June we should have a real deep bullpen with eight quality relievers competing for 6-7 spots and another (Alfonseca) back after the All-Star break.
