Posted May 9, 200520 yr after listening to the interview on espn clemens said that the only other team he would play for was the yankees and tip toed around his clause in his contract that if the astros are doing bad he can asked to be traded... personally, if the astros are 8 or more out by the allstar break he's a yankee on some point before july 31, 4pm
May 9, 200520 yr If the Yankees are still competing for last place with the D-Rays and the Stros are out of reach, he will 100% be a Yankee.
May 9, 200520 yr If both teams are a little back in the standings, I think he stays in Houston so he can watch his kids play.
May 9, 200520 yr that was a funny interview as roger tried to play 'dumb' on his clauses. 767617[/snapback] Exactly. He knows what's in his his damn clauses.
May 9, 200520 yr Personally, the most interesting part of the interview for me was that he in no way shape or form said that this was his last season (so the whole, finish it at home thing could be played up), he acknowledged the clause in his contract, but declined to get specific about it, and he danced around the steroid comments. You could see that he got real nervous about the Canseco allegations because he started shifting around in his chair, and he tried to quickly change the subject to "Jose's a good guy, he just went through some troubled time, I wish he just wrote about his life, because his life was interesting." He never denied the steroid talk... Oh, and I'm 50/50 saying this is his last season. I say 50/50 only because after this season, Clemens won't have many more career achievments to play for...he can't move into top-5 for career wins, won't catch Ryan for #1 on the strikeout list, and is already, statistically, the greatest living pitcher. However, if the Red Sox or Yankees come to him with another 1 year $18 million deal, I don't know if he turns it down. Plus, he's still in a class by himself, even at 42, so you'd hate to see him walk away while there's still something (well, a lot) left in the tank...
May 9, 200520 yr Yankees will be no lower than 3rd at the trading dead line and no more then 10 games out of 1st, or 5 out of the wild card. Clemens will be a Yank.
May 9, 200520 yr The only way Clemens will be a Yank is if MLB gets involved and forces things to be that way behind the scenes. The Yanks are old and lousy, and will be a long way behind Boston and/or Baltimore at the deadline, and plus, the 'Stros owner won't trade a guy that sells that many tickets for a team out of contention.

They have a near all-star at every position. They may be old, but they have plenty of time to right the ship, and you are already seeing the beginnings of that with back to back shutouts. The scariest thing I could think of doing is sleeping on a team like the Yankees.

Half their players (if not more) are FORMER all stars that NOW in 2005 are past their prime, that's their problem. And they threw back to back shutouts against the A's, let's not get ahead of ourselves and say their pitching staff is back.

Randy Johnson was an all-star last year, Derek Jeter and A-Rod were also all-stars and current all-stars. Tomg Gordon and Rivera were on the team last year. Sheffield was 2nd in the MVP voting. Matsui is a very dangerous hitter and poitential all-star. Carl Pavano healthy is an all-star. They are banged up right now. They will get healthy. Every team that has alot of new players is going to take some time to mesh and get some chemistry going. The Yanks have so many great players that each one is trying to win it all by themselves and not doing it as a team. It will happen.

Not to say that they can't turn things around, but there's a whole lot wrong with this team right now, and with the way the Orioles are playing (and the money/prospects they have to go out and deal with) and the way the Red Sox are keeping their head above water despite Schilling and Wells' injuries, you have to wonder if this Yankee team can catch up. I'm not saying they're significantly below the division in terms of talent, it's just that they've played themselves into such an early hole that it's going to be tough to catch up, especially if Baltimore goes out and gets Helton and/or a frontline starter.
May 11, 200520 yr he also said we should "celebrate" Barroids dingers? that was a bit odd. In the LA times the did an article saying he "could" be considered a juicer. that would be horrible for the game. I am sure if comes up Rocket will squash it like a bug.
