Dillon delivers heroic homer to lift Marlins

Rookie smashes game-winning dinger in fifth big league at-bat

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com

MIAMI -- Joe Dillon made his first at-bat at Dolphins Stadium a memorable one.

Playing in just his second Major League game, Dillon delivered a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the eighth inning that lifted the Marlins to a 4-3 win over the Devil Rays in front of a crowd of 25,432.

The Marlins rallied from three runs down for the second time this season. Dillon's liner over the left-field wall came off Jesus Colome.

Devil Rays left-hander Mark Hendrickson held the Marlins scoreless through five innings. But with one out in the sixth inning, Miguel Cabrera walked and Juan Encarnacion followed with a two-run homer to left-center. Two batters later, Damion Easley tied the game at three with a solo shot to left.

The Devil Rays struck quickly off Marlins starter A.J. Burnett, scoring twice in the first inning. Aubrey Huff, who had three hits Friday, delivered an RBI single and Jorge Cantu added a run-scoring groundout. Toby Hall's leadoff homer in the second inning put the Devil Rays up 3-0.

Ranks up there with Cabrera's walk off HR against the DRays in '03, and LoDuca's first pitch as a Marlin in '04.

Yeah, it's going to be one of those things that sticks in a Marlin fans' mind for a long time to come.

There are moments in this sport when you just have to shed a tear, thank the baseball gods, and hug your kid. Tonight was one of them.

I hope he never forgets it. I know I never will. :thumbup

Thank you Joe Dillon. Thank you baseball gods.

Both Cabrera and Dillon hit game winning home runs on their 5th career atbat. I haven't got goosebumps like that since Lo Duca's first at bat last August.

against Tampa Bay...that's freakishly coincidental.

Dillon's liner over the left-field wall came off Jesus.

They offer it on MLB.com for $3.99 per game. I believe you can get any game you want from the year.
