June 27, 200521 yr D-Train wants TLR to start a Cardinal While Dontrelle Willis is beginning to receive national support to start the All-Star Game, the pitcher said Tony La Russa should award that honor to one of his own pitchers: Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter. La Russa will manage the National League All-Stars and choose the starting pitcher. ''I would want him to select his guy,'' Willis said. ``That's his team. I've got a lot of respect for Tony La Russa. Whatever he wants to do. Me personally, I want him to start one of his guys.'' Like Willis, Carpenter is also enjoying a strong year. He is 11-4 with a 2.77 ERA, three shutouts and three complete games. By comparison, Willis is 12-2 with a 1.76 ERA, three shutouts and four complete games. Willis was selected to the 2003 All-Star team as a rookie but did not play. ''I just want to play,'' Willis said. ``I would love to get in there and get my cleats dirty.'' Willis might be in a better position than Carpenter to start the July 12 game in Detroit. The way the rotation is set for the Marlins, Willis would make three more starts before the break, with his final one falling on July 8, four days before the All-Star Game. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are thinking of tweaking their rotation so Carpenter's last start for them would fall on July 10, a Sunday. [ Dontrelle just got a lot more respect from me. I already loved the kid but wow.. Dontrelle as of this minute should be starting. This is just another reason I follow the Marlins after the Cards. I love Miggy (I've met him) and now the D-Train says this? I love that team!]
June 27, 200521 yr He deserves to be the starter and should be the starter. It would be a big mistake if he didn't.
June 27, 200521 yr Author I'm sure La Russa will have him start. It's a no brainer.. But if he's serious about what he's saying then who knows..
June 27, 200521 yr I love this kid, he says the right things. But, unlike most he actually means them when he says them
June 27, 200521 yr yep, tons of respect. extremely humble. good work ethic. hes the type of guy that would sign w/ florida for less money just because he started here. The Cards are my second favorite team and the only other team I follow other than the fish (I go to school in central illinois where its split cubs/cards/sox) and I am a huge tony LaRussa fan and Chris Carpenter (playoffs would have been different w/ him in it). The Cards will have the starting 3rd, first, and possibly SS and 2b in the all-star game. They could potentially own the entire infield. having 1/2 his team starting TLR would most likely start Willis. Also, TLR has HUGE respect for Willis which says a lot because tony doesnt give out that respect easily.
June 27, 200521 yr D-Tain isn't the type of player who is going to say he's the best, which is why he tries to improve himself more than an arrogant pitcher like Beckett does.
June 27, 200521 yr I think the MLB is gonna force LaRussa's hand a bit and make him start DTrain. The publicity would be huge for the MLB.
June 27, 200521 yr Author Regardless of Dontrelle's opinion, Dontrelle's stats are better than Carpenter's. 827964[/snapback] I dont see anyone denying that :notworthy :lol
