Ponson traded

Featured Replies

Ken Rosenthal:

Nevin's agent, Barry Axelrod, told TSN that Padres general manager Kevin Towers has yet to formally request Nevin's approval for a trade to the Orioles. Nevin vetoed a trade to Cincinnati (a deal involving Ken Griffey Jr.) in 2002.

"Phil doesn't want to go anywhere," Axelrod told TSN. "He's from this area. He's building a new home in San Diego. He has three children in school here. His parents attend a good portion of the games -- they live 80 or 90 miles up the road. San Diego is where he wants to be."

Well, they have no room for Lowell now.

Maybe the one thing we've haven't about is this: The O's simply don't know what they're doing and don't know how to react in a pennant race.

Why because they traded one of the worst starting pitchers in the majors for Phil Nevin? They are going to make another deal, probably for Jeff Weaver. Even if they dont, Nevin is an uppgrade to the offense and Penn or John Maine would be an upgrade over Ponson.

Jeff Weaver? Check out his numbers versus the Sox. And the Yankees, another patient team, will likely fare just as well.

And how, exactly, does Nevin help the offense? Where's he gonna play? Over Palmiero and his nearly 850 OPS? Nevin's OPS is like 710...lower than Jeff Conine.

Weaver's numbers vs. the Sox and Yankees are similar to Ponson's numbers vs. everybody lol. Nevin will take at bats away from Admin Bigbie mostly and Sammy Sosa.

Nevin doesnt want to go anywhere, I wouldnt say this mean nobody wants to play for the O's

That's a lot of money for a DH who's OPS is close to Sosa's.

I'd rather pay it to Nevin than to a starting pitcher with an ERA over 6 :)

I like Weaver alot.. but he's making 10 mil this year and is a FA after this year. He was one of the guys I would hope we would take a look at in the offseason... but he might be more expensive than we would want.

He's definitely an innings eater and will go atleast 7 IP each time out. He's had 3 terrible starts early in the year but has been solid since then.

How much Offense do the O's really need? They are turning into the Rangers of the East.

I mean you'd think that this line up would be good enough the way it is, how many potential 20-30 HR, 100 RBI guys does a team need?

Sosa, Palmiero, Mora, Gibbons, Nevin, Tejada?... and Brian Roberts isn't playing to shabby either.

Unless the Orioles are going to move Nevin, or one of those other guys they will be stuck in 3rd place until they get some quality pitching.

The offense is what has been losing the majority of the games for about the last month.I dont care what you guys say, I'm not going to let you rain on my parade, Sidney Ponson might be gone! :D

Well, I mean if Nevin was the ONLY guy in the entire major leagues that you could trade for, then yes, I get it...

The only other potential deal that I heard about was Ponson for Richard Hidalgo and the Orioles would have to pay most of Ponson's contract.

Kinda makes you wonder about giving him that fat contract to match his wasitline, don't it? :)

Bamer so you would rather spend the 11mil on a okay 1st baseman then on a decent starter?Seriously the O's are not going to make the playoffs without pitching they have Sox,Yankees,Blue Jays,Twins,Anaheim,Chicago and Oakland who all have a better pitching staff than the O's.There are only 4 teams that are going to make it to the dance and the only chance they have is the wildcard. My bet is the the Wild card is not coming from the East this year Minnesota will take the final spot. The White Sox and Angels are locks barring a major disaster on either of those teams. You gotta believe either Boston or NewYork are going to take the East.I don't think the O's will last in the race witout some decent pitching. Expecially with no ACE.

I would rather spend the money on a decent pitcher but that wasnt an option, it was an OK bat or a poor starting pitcher.

Yeah, quite obviously the Orioles don't know what they're doing.

Oh hey... they just managed to unload their albatross contract. How are you guys doing with yours?

What the hell is ponson doing hes pitching now.i would expect them to bench him or something with the trade talk.

871937

Why would they bench him if nothing is official?

Plus, the national ESPN Radio show just mentioned that they are expecting a statement from Nevin's agent shortly rejecting the trade to Baltimore.

 • Author

Buster Olney said on ESPNEWS that the Orioles and Marlins are still trying to work something out.

872018

Probably because Nevin will reject the trade.

872023

probably
