Largest trade in NBA history sends Antoine Walker to Miami

By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer

August 2, 2005

MIAMI (AP) -- In the largest trade in NBA history, Antoine Walker was dealt from Boston to Miami on Tuesday night in a transaction involving five teams and 13 players.

The Heat also acquired point guard Jason Williams and small forward James Posey from Memphis, while the Grizzlies received guard Eddie Jones from the Heat. The New Orleans Hornets and Utah Jazz were also involved in the deal.

The trade was larger than a 12-player, four-team deal in 2000 involving Patrick Ewing that had been the biggest in league history.

Miami also received Andre Emmett from Memphis and the draft rights to Roberto Duenas from the Hornets; Utah received Greg Ostertag from Memphis; Boston picked up Curtis Borchardt from Utah and a package -- Qyntel Woods, the draft rights to Albert Miralles, two second-round draft picks and cash -- from Miami; New Orleans acquired Rasual Butler from Miami and Kirk Snyder from Utah; and the Grizzlies received guard Raul Lopez from the Jazz.

So heres who everyone gets

yea, hopefully we can change his game and hopefully it wont take half a season to do so :thumbup

The heat were the best offensive team in the nba last year, and they didn't need more offense.

The problem with that logic is, who on this team could score besides Shaq and Wade? We saw quite clearly that the answer to that was no one, because no one could make a shot when it mattered the most unless they were wearing either 3 or 32.

They needed better perimeter defense, rebounding, athleticism, and size at the guard/small forward position. Both Walker and Williams are defensive liabilities. Though Walker does add rebounding, which is important considering that Haslem is undersized, he is slow, unathletic, and struggles to cover quick small forwards. Williams is a poor on-the-ball defender and is a small point guard. The heat need a big point guard who can cover 2-guards who are too tall or possibly too active for wade to cover.

I think this, in a nutshell, is the summation of the misconceptions people have about Dwyane Wade. The man is underrated at defense, he has no problems handling players. SVG didn't want Wade covering Rip Hamilton or someone like that because he didn't want him getting tired and not being able to tear the life out of whoever was covering him on offense. However, Wade was responsible more often than not for covering either the best or the second best player on the court every game we played. And for the times that we specifically said Wade shouldn't cover someone, like Rip, EJ would take over. Now Posey takes EJ's spot as the lock down defender. Where is the loss here?

Walker, however, is an excellent addition offensively. He is a very versatile offensive player who can be the consistent third scoring option both inside and out that Jones could not consistently be.

Which, in reality, was the biggest need for the team this offseason. Someone that can score consistently when Wade and/or Shaq aren't around to baby the club.

Williams, in my mind, is the exact opposite of what we need in a point guard. We don't need someone to penetrate and create shots, Wade does that. We need an unselfish, technically sound ball handler, who can run the offense without getting in the way and hit open jump shots. Williams dribbles too much, is not fundamentally sound, too flashy, and a poor perimeter shooter percentage wise. He will try to create too much.

Wade doesn't have to be the only one penetrating and creating shots - in fact, having a second slasher will help tremendously because not only will Wade now be able to save his energy a bit more, but the defense will have to collapse even more. Couple that with Wade already being one of the premier penetrators and the Big Aristotle down low, and you have tightly wound Ds that will lead to even more open shots for people like Walker, Udonis, and DWade to feast on.

Not only that, but JWIll is exactly what we needed out of a PG - someone who is pass first. In the entire league, there are two better passers, Nash and Kidd. And neither of them has a Flash and a big truck of Diesel to play with. He could open up the offense in ways not seen in the Eastern Conference in a long, long time. 105 points a night isn't out of the realm of possibility, maybe more.

This trade ruins team chemistry, which unlike in baseball, does lead to wins. It replaces a key role player in Eddie Jones with two guys who are notorious for being unable to play their role. Offensively, there simply will not be enough shots to go around. I fear that the great team offense we had last year will deteriorate into individual play. We lose balance between playmakers and role players, which is incredibly important. Also, our weakness, team defense especially perimeter defense, now becomes a gaping whole. This is fine against bad to mediocre teams, but against a technically solid, well-coached team (a la the Spurs and Pistons) could become a disaster.

The Heat aren't well coached? SVG has done one of the better jobs in basketball over the past two years and he, like his young SG, is constantly improving. Not only that, but the Heat have the ultimate equalizer as far as chemistry goes - their Center. There are a bunch of good clubhouse guys here, like Wade, U, Zo if he stays, etc. But not only is Shaq a good clubhouse presence, he's also the clubhouse enforcer. If you start f***ing around you'll have to answer to the big man. You don't pass the ball enough, or make stupid shots, and you'll have to answer to the big man. There is no big primadonna on this team to the likes of Kobe regardless, and even if there was they have to run not only through Shaq but through Wade and the other stalwarts. It won't be a problem.

I probably hated Eddie Jones more than anyone in South Florida, but with the evolution of team, I fundamentally disagreed with trading him. He was precisely what the Heat needed at the 2-guard (not the 3). He is one of the best on-the-ball defenders. He is quick and athletic, and, except for early last year, is a consistent perimeter shooter. His three point shooting percentage is always near the top of the league. As long as Eddie need not be relied upon as the focal point of the offense, he was able to stretch opposing defenses and catch them off-guard. Most importantly, he was a lock-down defender.

We get considerably better offensive production from Antoine Walker, and very comparable defense in Posey. When we need defense, we could realistically march out a team of Shaq/Haslem/Posey/Wade/Williams, which still gives us two of the ten best scoring options in basketball on the floor and has a pretty solid defense to boot. Add Zo in there to spell Shaq if he returns and whatever Wayne Simien gives us, and that's a pretty good defense. And then of course if we want to just run teams out of the building we'll march some combination of Shaq/Walker/Wright/Wade/Williams and watch the scoreboard get lit up with as many FGs and As as there'd be Ws.

Perhaps, we just wanted to dump Jones salary. But we took on 6 years of Walker. There is no way that Walker stays productive when he is 34 and 35, so we will be stuck with an Eddie Jones contract 4 years from now.

Personally, I'll take 4 years of a ridiculous team and then two years of meh, then 6 years of a good team but never anything special.

I would have preferred just doing the Walker part of the deal, which had nothing to do with Eddie Jones. Jones was traded for Williams and Posey. I feel the best team would have been with Walker and Jones.

Yeah, but we didn't pay Udonis 5/37 to sit on the bench, and DJ isn't coming back. So we're better off this way plus we clear a contract we've wanted to move since Stalin and Hitler were duking it out.

I am surprised that Riley who stresses length, athleticism, traditional fundamentals, and most importantly defense would do this trade. I am particularly surprised by his comment that Williams gives us playmaking at point guard we haven't since Hardaway, considering that the Heat have the best playmaking guard in the league in Wade. I hope that Riley is not trying to change his style because the league is changing. Just because no one in the west, except for the spurs, plays defense, does not mean that heat should follow that trend. I guess in all... I am just shocked and disappointed.

The thing is, now we have a playmaking point guard. Wade is at his best when he can roam free and do his thing from the 2 spot. He'll still share the ball quite a bit, but as the 2 he can be a complete player with the boards and dimes to go along with the points. With Williams on board we have a true PG, and he's going to have more weapons to deal with than before.

people hate JWill from his sacramento days..

he is a completely different player

people say he takes too many errant shots, but he averaged 9.1 shots per game compared to 8.9 to Damon Jones..

sure shooting percentage is much worse, but that could change since he will get many more open shots, now that he plays with shaq and wade.

also he averages more assists, and had a 3.1-1 assist to turnover ratio which is pretty good.

i think he was the steal of this trade, considering we gave up nothing to get him.

i also love how people are saying how come we gave up eddie.. this is the same eddie jones who couldnt shut down rip hamilton in game 7, and the same inconsistent eddie jones everyone wanted out of here, last year.

i love this trade

i wasnt trying to jump on you back btw. i re-read what i wrote. i took what you said a lil too literally. sorry if i attacked you. i do also agree. not sure why they made this trade.

I like the deal because of the names and I have always liked white chocolate for obvious reasons. but honestly I dont think this deal helps a whole lot, you are bringing two guys who love getting the ball in toine and Jwill ... I dont know how that will play out with Shaq and Wade

plus our defense (cornerstone of Riley) has gone waaaaaaaaay down

If Posey is healthy though, he will be hte star of this trade. That you can book, kid plays with energy and is a tenacious defender.

thats what I told my friend ... I even rather have him start over Toine any day of the week

If the Heat are true to their plan and Posey stays healthy, Posey will start at the 3 and Walker will come off the bench. Posey is a great perimeter defender and has a decent enough offensive game. Im not saying hes as good (Das), but they liken him to a Bruce Bowen-type of player.

haha, J-Dub is on the heat.

my favorite player in the NBA until Udonis came around.

886594

2 Gators. now we just need to pick up Teddy Dupay for backup point. :mischief

887030

Dont forget, the Heat signed Matt Walsh to a 2-year contract.

he is a younger type of Bruce Bowen player with better offensive skills.

If he can stay healthy and play with absolute passion on defense he can utterly annoy and drive players up a wall.

Kinda like Bruce does.

Rumor Update:

The Miami Heat seeking a true back-up point guard have shown considerable interest in now free agent point guard Nick Van Exel. The Heat believe he could be a lethal weapon off their bench and could be better than Damon Jones who is likely heading to Cleveland. In my opinion, he would be a terrific addition to our team. He is a veteran player who has great shooting and passing abilities. Would you want him on our bench?

* You need to scroll down to see this rumor on the above website.

Talent wise, Nick Van Exel is decent, but with all the chemistry worries we have right now, this is the last guy we need. He is a loser. Almost like a Marbury, but worse. I would rather have Finley than Van Exel and his bad reputation....

instead of van exel why dont we give derek fisher some thought?.. :mischief2

Trailblazers released guard Derek Anderson and designated him as amnesty player.

That means his salary comes off the books as far as luxury tax is concerned and he's free to sign with another team. Reportedly, that is the Lakers, as Phil Jackson loves his big guards. Expect an announcement in the next few days of Anderson's arrival in L.A.

I also believe the same thing ... it will be sad that the heat will pay $56 million to a 6th man

He'll be the 6th man, but he'll still be getting 25-30 minutes per game. Just because Posey may be starting doesn't mean he'll be getting more minutes.

Even though he may not start, Walker could very likely get the third most minutes behind Shaq and Wade because he will play mutiple positions.

you wonder why jerry west traded him though, supposedly he really likes the guy, perhaps he knows more about that foot injury than we think.

kinda like the spurs and charles smith 'spiderman' a few years back who was discovered to have some problem, though i do forget now. although he is still playing and just signed a multiyear deal with the blazers, of which i'm glad, great player, great heart. wish we still had him.

The thing is, he liked EJ a lot too, especially considering he drafted him. And to get EJ, he had to give up Posey (not only because Miami wanted him, but because the contracts along with Williams' would match as well).

Walker is a very good, versatile player when he's playing his low post game and not chucking up 3s in the perimeter. If the Heat can maximize that strength, he'll be well worth the minutes and the money. Not to mention, he'll be taking only 10 shots a game or so compared to the 20 he was taking in Atlanta and Boston. Off the bench, he can be a playmaker for himself and others when Wade and Shaq are out.

I know that this is a plug, but I cant help it - miamiheatzone.com. We have been covering this in depth for a long, long time now.
