Posted August 30, 200519 yr I know I know, one start does not make or break anyone. But AJ had a BIG TIME chance tonight to show his free agent suitors how he could perform in a big game situation going up against the likely Cy Young winner for this year. And he laid an egg. Not the best stage to do that on. Yes this will all be meaningless if the fish happen to make the playoffs and AJ shines in the post season. But tonight could've really been a showcase game for him, and he let it go.
August 30, 200519 yr I asked myself the same thing tonight leaving the game. Is it now the best time to go to AJ with a 3/$26 offer with a fourth year option to bring it to 4/$39 mil. I mean, it's back to back poor starts, and AJ has to wonder if this is his highest point. We may be able to get him for a "reasonable" rate on our terms. I mean, I'm not saying AJ should have won tonight, Carpenter is going to win the Cy Young for a good reason, but keeping the game at 3 or even 4 would have been nice, 6 just isn't going to do it.
August 30, 200519 yr Don't worry about AJ, he's gonna be set for life after he gets his new contract this off season
August 30, 200519 yr You guys are crazy. Two starts do not make or break a player, and anyone with some sense knows this... It's not going to have ANY effect on his status in the off-season.
August 30, 200519 yr AJ can finish the season 12-15 for a losing record and he will still get 10million a year. teams seem to be paying more for talent these days then numbers for the past 2-3 yrs
August 30, 200519 yr How about something fancy where us, the Reds, and Yanks do a 3 way trade that supplies the Yanks with Pierre and pitching prospects not named Olsen and Varags(or Allison hopefully) to the Reds, the Reds give the Yanks some position prospects, we get Pavano back and someone from the Reds along the lines of Austin Kearnes or Willy Mo Pena...if we had AJ's bestest buddy back he would be more likely to stay.
August 30, 200519 yr Oh, come now. I'm sure that team deals in the offseason wasn't foremost in his mind last night. He is one of the few players that i've seen have fire in his eyes to get to the post season.

He had a bad game but chances are, even if he pitched well, Chris Carpenter has been blowing everyone away lately--we might still have lost.

Besides him, there will be no other better pitcher in the offseason, so that is why regardless of how he does he'll still be able to demand big bucks.
