Posted September 1, 200519 yr Just heard on SC that Shaq went to Louisiana and is going to help people out. He could have just donated money like every other athlete, but Shaq actually went there to physically help. Nice job, Shaq.
September 1, 200519 yr Not to knock it or anything, but in all honesty it probably creates more of a distraction than actual help.

September 1, 200519 yr its not really morale boosting when theyre trying to evacuate everyone. I commend the man for going and if I was from the area I would have either stayed and been near death or gone back and tried to help, but the man has a valid statement with it being a distraction.
September 1, 200519 yr You really think Shaq is making a scene near like flooded homes and stuff? No, he is probably in the red cross areas, shelters, and soup kitchen like places. I dont see how he could be a distraction.

I dont see how he could be a distraction. 924940 Because they will give him special transportation. They will more than likely keep more than one gaurd on him at all times. If you think they are going to let him be near the public with no transportation or escorts is foolish. And you know some people will come and ask for autographs and crowd around one way or another. It is nice, but he isn't helping out more than Joe Schmo.

Instead they should just continue sitting around in a crowded area worrying about loved ones and how they dont have a home instead of getting a chance to meet a great public figure and brightening their day just a little?
September 1, 200519 yr So for the kids and adults alike who would get an autograph, a hug, or a handshake this is somehow detrimental? 924944 You feel okay telling people on roofs: "Oh sorry we didn't get to you sooner we ran out of troops, we had to have a couple extra gaurd Shaq, oh yeah and use a helicopter to fly him in." Gimme a break. This is still a rescue mission, we need to use all our resources on saving lives not baby sitting Shaq. I feel bad for you that you would rather make a kid who is safe happy meanwhile leave people on roofs high and dry.

But do you honestly think that one or two soldiers (if they even would use soldiers to be around him instead of a charity organization) that would be with Shaq makes or breaks a rescue mission? Give me a break. And what does having a helicopter flying him in have anything to do with not being able to rescue people? I highly doubt they would use a helicopter from Louisiana that could have been used for Rescue to pick up Shaq, go to Miami, and then bring him back. I would assume he or the organization setting this up would provide the transportation from a different area. You are blowing a kind gesture waaaaay out of proportion.
September 1, 200519 yr It is still a rescue mission, people are out there without food or water, more or less trapped. Yeah it would be nice to raise the morale of these people but that time will come later after we save all those we can. I for one would like to know we used all the power we could to save as many as we can, down to the last man. The time to visit and raise morale is after everyone is safe. Or go to Houston and raise the people's morales there, that is not a war zone.
September 1, 200519 yr Trust me fellas, Passion is right. It is amazing how many people don't exercise common sense on this board. By using commong logic, don't you think if Shaq was hinderous instead of helpful to this opperation, they would have declined his help offering?
September 1, 200519 yr Its not the time for this. I am sure they will take any help they can, but how are they going to tell no to Shaq. "The Red Cross Turns Shaq Away", that might tick people off and they might be hesitant to offer help. I am not saying Shaq is in the wrong here, I am not saying his intentions are anything but good, but this is not the time. He can go do the telethon. Go to Houston. Work at a packing plant that is sending things out. But to go into La at this time is not right.

I am sure he contacted them first to get the ok and didn't just do this on a whim.
September 1, 200519 yr When reading the comments about Shaq doing this being potentially a bad thing I think of a very true saying "No good deed goes unpunished" There's no reason to knock a good gesture like this. It's just like today a company I do business with announced they are donating 5% of the proceeds for September to the RedCross and people had the nerve to a) say 5% is not enough b) claim they are using this just to increase sales. Can't even do something good without being looked at in a bad way I guess.

Yeah it would be nice to raise the morale of these people but that time will come later after we save all those we can. 924954 Actually, the "rescue" phase has tapered off and is nearing its end. 925005 How so? You have thousands of people inside of NO that need to be taken out. They can't stay there. Put on CNN, there are people that went to a shelter at convention center and they have not seen food or water in 2 days. There are no national gaurds in sight for them, they are yelling at the tv crews to get help. They have dead bodies lining the streets and sidewalks, they can't just leave those either, they have to take them somewhere.
September 1, 200519 yr Funny how even when someone is trying to do good in the community, people still have to talk crap. At least the man is actually going out there to help people out. That's more than what we can say about others who only care about buying their next Benz.
September 1, 200519 yr I'm not knocking him, I said that a number of times, people have a hard time reading I guess. It is good he wants to do something, but I think thing would be better served if he did the telethon, or went somewhere where the goal is not to get people out of ASAP.

September 1, 200519 yr my company is actually asking for volunteers to go there and chances are I'll go. It's said to be long hours and not much sleep, with no real idea where we will be. I can't go for another 2 weeks but I'm sure we'll still be sending people.
September 1, 200519 yr You really think it'll be easy to go there and seeing what's going on over there? You really think that other celebrities would go out of their way to go and help out the way he is? No. Maybe some, but for the most part, no. I think what he is doing is pretty admirable. I know I wouldn't be able to handle seeing what is going on over there myself. my company is actually asking for volunteers to go there and chances are I'll go. :thumbup
September 1, 200519 yr When the Heat visited Arcadia (they got on a bus and drove to Desoto County, hit worst than Charlotte) and even though they were there for 4 hours or so, they made such an impression that people there who have little money and barely shelter, became huge HEAT fans. They watch the games, play more basketball, buy jerseys, etc. Mind you it may seem minor, but when you have nothing else to look forward to in the immediate future, it can be everything. GO SHAQ!
