Marlins stadium talks stall...

Featured Replies

Stadium stalemate: The Marlins' quest for a new stadium has reached a stalemate after negotiations broke down this week between the team, city of Miami and Miami-Dade County.

A $45 million gap remains on the proposed $435 million retractable-roof project. The Marlins are hoping to build a 38,000-seat stadium next to the Orange Bowl in Miami.

"I feel that, overall, the Marlins were not enthused with the talks. They walked out and said, 'We're disappointed,'" Miami city manager Joe Arriola told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "The truth of the matter is we're still at Stage 1. They have not moved, we have not moved. We don't have any more money. They don't want to make any concessions in the magnitude of the project."

The longer the financial piece of funding remains unresolved, the more likely it is that the total cost of the project will increase. Under the best-case scenario, the Marlins wouldn't be ready to move into a new stadium until 2009.

The club has a series of one-year leases to remain at Dolphins Stadium through the 2010 season.

The longer this goes on, the more likely what they've negotiated to date will fall apart. It doesn't sound good. And all this after things were really looking good this past spring.

Why not just get some private investers in? Pay the gap money back to them over a pre-determined period of time with parking garage and luxury box revenue.

Sell sky boxes for fill in part of the gap

Just heard Ike Seamens on with Joe Rose this morning...things do not sound good. Word is that "if the talks aren't dead they are on life support." The cost of the project is increasing and the city & county have no more money to give. The funding gap is widening and the Marlins are admanant about a retractable roof. Rumored options include tearing down the Orange Bowl (thus saving the $ for allocated for it's renovation) and building a Marlin stadium on the city owned land. The problem with this is that the Canes would have to play in Dolphin Stadium. The UM trustees are not to fond of this plan.

:confused

Do the Caines even pay much to the Orange Bowl for use? The Unniversity of Miami is rich enough to build the Caines their own stadium.

But with the history of the Orange bowl I would hate to see it go. Heck though the "Orange Bowl Game" Is already played at Joe Robbie.

Ownership wouldn't just let this thing die would they? I mean this could be their only chance at finally getting a stadium... :(

I wouldn't want to see the OB torn down for the sake of baseball, BUT the orange bowl game is already being played in Dolphins Stadium. The only thing i would hate if the Canes move there is that everything will be in Dolphins logo's, you won't find the famus "U" in the middle of the field, or the Hurricanes in the End Zones. It wouldn't feel like home to the Canes players. I'm a big time Canes fan and i don't want to see that happen, theres no orange and green in Dolphins Stadium to show the UM colors, Orange Bowl is home for the canes. I wish UM would build there own stadium cause i think it would be awsome for them, but i would rather have the orange bowl stay for the canes, and build the baseball stadium next it if need be. I don't want the team to move to another state of course, but there going to ruin the Canes home turf in the process if they continue with this tearing the orange bowl idea.

I agree. Given the popularity of the Canes football program, why is the City of Miami on the hook to provide a private institution a football stadium?

The University rents the stadium I believe. Also, they are putting forth a lot of money for the proposed renovations to my understading. Also the City is not "on the hook" to provide a stadium for a private institution, the city owns the stadium....not the University. Therefore if the city makes the stadium better they can attract more events, like more soccer matches, more College Football Bowl Games, hell, maybe they could even get the Orange Bowl game back. Also, maybe they could try MLS again down here and put it where it always belonged...in the OB.

Actually, from what I hear, FIU is set to start construction on a new stadium after either this year or the following, and I believe the money is coming from the Micosukee.. I think its going to be like a 30-35k stadium, obviously with plenty of expansion possibility. Not a bad idea to have it there, but the OB would be right in the heart of Little Havana. If you make the tickets cheap enough you can get some good numbers there I think.
