Kuwait to donate $500 million worth of oil product

Featured Replies

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Wealthy OPEC nation Kuwait is donating $500 million worth of oil products and other humanitarian aid to its ally the United States to ease the impact of Hurricane Katrina, state news agency KUNA reported on Sunday.

"The humanitarian aid is oil products that the devastated (U.S.) states need in these circumstances, plus other humanitarian aid to lessen the devastation these three states have been subjected to," Energy Minister Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahd al-Sabah told KUNA.

Sheikh Ahmad said the gesture was a duty toward a friend by the tiny Gulf Arab state which was liberated in 1991 by a U.S.-led multinational coalition from seven months of occupation by Iraq.

The minister, who is also the OPEC chief, was speaking after the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers. Tiny Kuwait controls nearly a tenth of global petroleum reserves.

Now maybe Kuwait'll tell the rest of Opec to open up production to ease prices of oil. FYI, it costs about $4 to produce a barrel of crude oil...it's selling at around $70.

its about damn time some foregin aid comes in...THANKS KUWAIT..hopefully it will ease gas prices down to 2.05 lol...prob not but wishful thinking rite?

You got a link to this story?

Not that I don't believe it or anything.

Wow, thanks to Kuwait! You guys rock!

Qatar donated $100 million worth of aid.

It's funny, the middle east has donated more than the entire rest of the world combined. I don't think anyone could have seen that coming...

Well we have some goobers that are going to say it's because Bush is homies with the royal families down there.

Good, they're donating oil.

Just one problem...

HOW THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO TURN IT ALL INTO SOMETHING USEFUL WITHOUT FUNCTIONING REFINERIES?!!!!

Good, they're donating oil.

Well if we're not paying to have it shipped over, that's got to help.

I have a hard time understanding why it is that countries that are poorer than us are donating hundreds of millions of dollars. Aren't they just going to need it back?

Seems nice of them to do anyway.

i don't think i've ever seen another country used as a contraction. lol..

anyway, thats nice, afterall, we did spend a war and make a movie about them.

and doesn't britain and france owe us like, bundles of moolah???

now would be a good time to pay us back

Britain, France, and Germany all owe us money from World War One alone. Don't get started on World War Two because the debt they owe us is rather immense and would kill those countries' economies.

You have no idea how wealthy Kuwait and Qatar are, do you?

Kuwait is not the "arab" country you see on the news. Very wealthy, very American-ized. Kuwait City looks like Seattle or Toronto, Canada(to me anyway, it probably reminded others of a different US city, I think it was the big tower that reminded me of those two cities). Some of the elderly to middle aged still cling to their old ways, but the young generations are just like American teenagers. From what one of the citizens told me, every newborn Kuwaiti baby is started off with(if I am not mistaken) a $100K trust fund. Great country, I'd love to go back just to visit someday.

Nigeria donated $1 million.

Times like these, I wonder what Bill Gates is doing and if he is helping at all and how much if so.

I know it seems laughable, but one donation that I saw that was really heartwarming was that Sri Lanka donated $25,000. This is a tiny island country that was practically wiped out by the tsunami, one of the poorest countries in the world.

I'm not going to defend him but Bill Gates donates 100s of millions of dollars a year.

I was not taking a shot at him, I just really was curious to know what he does.
