September 12, 200520 yr Here at NYU, most of the Greek life isn't emphasized, but the frat guys that I know are all really big douches. I'd advise against it, because it seems that nice people that join frats also become jerks, not to mention, most of the girls that I know hate frat guys.

September 12, 200520 yr Like Shaq said it depends what kind of person you are...if you want more girls/more friends then definitely go for it. With Frats I guess you get that instant comradery(of course after pledging period which is some cases is not worth it). Personally I cannot afford to join one or really have any interest in joining one, but at the same time I live with two Pi Kapps and my first two years in college my roomate was a Sigma Chi. All of them are real cool guys and some of my best friends, and I strongly disagree with TSwift that they all become a**holes, but it could just be a difference in schools. Elon Greek life is everything, I think we got 4th in the Nation in Greek life or something dumb like that. Also, I guess it depends on the Frat you want to join. Some have good reputations and well some don't, but that always differs from school to school. Anyways...I say go to the rush/bid party and see how you like the guys and see if you can get a bid. I think once you go and meet some of the people you would be able to make up your mind
September 12, 200520 yr the frat scene at my school wasn't that big ... most of the frat people I worked with, attended classes with, et al were complete jerkoffs my roomate in london was the president of his frat, and was actually a really cool guy (then again, he admitted he was pretty sick of the scene and the incoming group of guys) at my school it was not necessary ... and personally I would never pay money or go through pledging just to have friends, make connections, etc there are much better ways to go about this I'd also go to parties out at Penn State and don't think I stepped foot in a frat house once ... met plenty of girls and parties the opportunity is going to be what you make of it either way ... if the only outlet on your campus is joining a fraternity, then you may want to look at it however, it wasn't for me and I probably wouldn't of selected a school that was all about the frats

September 12, 200520 yr Frats are pretty cool if you join the right one. Here at UF certain ones have some cool cats in them, other ones are full of douchebags.
September 12, 200520 yr Don't think being in a frat is all about partying and meeting girls. You have to go to a bunch of meetings and do lots of community service and what not, if you don't think you'll have much free time don't do it but if you are into that sort of stuff go for it.
September 13, 200520 yr I was in a fraternity and loved it. But the answer to your question is "it depends". Your handle tells me you are going to FIU which is a commuter school. If you are from Miami and have friends in school a fraternity may may not be as appealing to you as it was to me. I went to small all boys Catholic high school, Belen. But I attended UF which at the time had 35,000 undergrad students (now it's 45,000). Only two other guys from my high school senior class went to UF and they weren't really friends of mine. By joining a fraternity, I made a lot of friends, many of which I still keep in touch with 15 years later. I also lived in the fraternity house for 3 years which saved me money (rooms and board in the house was cheaper than an appartment or a dorm). The savings almost made up for the dues I had to pay. The drinking age had just turned for 19 to 21 a few years earlier and so fraternities were the last bastion of underage drinking (older brothers in the house would buy kegs). We also had a lot of social functions. I met my first wife through the fraternity. She was a "little sister" of the fraternity. Little sister groups don't formally exist any more (lawyers and femininst runnied that) but there are still female "camp followers" which is a good thing. Something non-greeks will tell you is that frat guys are all this way or all that way. Nothing could be further from the truth. At UF we had 33 fraternities and they were all different. Some were jocks, some were nerds, some black, some jewish and then there houses that were eclectic. That's the way my fraternity was. Eclectic. We had potheads, bookworms, jocks, Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, everything. At FIU I don't think the fraternities have houses which is kind of a bummer. It's a natural place to congregate. If you live in Miami you probably have obligations like a job or family so its different than when you are away at school. Hope that helps.

September 13, 200520 yr FIUMarlinfan- Here is my suggestion for you...I went "Greek" in 2002 and joined Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority...the purple and the gold jerseys....It has been one of the best experiences of my life...I know FIU is a commuter campus and all, but if you want to get involved and take your college experience to another level, then I would definitely rush....I love the networking, it helps a lot to know fellow greeks as they are everywhere! Look into these three organizations which I consider the better ones on campus... 1.) Pi Kappa Phi- (I love these guys, they are true gentlemen of class and are just amazing!!! They might not have a house, but they certainly know how to take things to the next level. One of my little brothers is a PiKapp and so is one of my best friends....I love them!!!) www.pikappfiu.com 2.) Phi Gamma Delta -FIJI-(They have one of the best GPAs on campus and also their house is stunning.) www.fiufiji.com 3.) September 13, 200520 yr It really depends on the school you're at and the kinds of fraternities that are there and what you are looking for...I had no intentions of even paying any attention to fraternities when I got to Winthrop, but I ended up joining Kappa Sigma during my second semester when I wanted to get involved in something on campus...As someone who needed a little push to get involved in more things, this was a perfect experience for me as I was able to learn and use leadership skills, get involved on campus and in the community, and help break me out of my shell (I was pretty shy in high school). I will say that my exposure to other fraternities at Winthrop and others at other schools haven't been too good (I haven't found too many others I would've been willing to join), but my chapter was perfect for me at the time, and I'm very glad I did it. Our chapter stressed academics (#1 in fraternity GPA every semester except one since the chapter's founding in 1993) and yet still had a good time. So to make a long story short, it was good for me, but experiences vary widely depending on the organization and the school...You just need to feel it out (I don't recommend rushing right when you get to school) and see what fits for you (if any)...
