September 29, 200520 yr The Red Sox acquired left-hander Mike Stanton from the Washington Nationals on Thursday for right-handers Rhys Taylor and Yader Peralta. Boston's trade means Stanton could wind up pitching this weekend against his former team, the New York Yankees. If the Red Sox advance to the playoffs, Stanton would not be eligible for the postseason roster. Stanton, who is 38, started the season with the Yankees and was cut June 30 after going 1-2 with a 7.08 ERA in 14 innings over 28 relief appearances. He signed with Washington on July 13 and went 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 27 2-3 innings over 30 games. "We'd like to thank Mike for the fine job he did not only in our bullpen, but with the knowledge and leadership he shared with our young pitchers," Nationals general manager Jim Bowden said. "We are pleased to acquire two young pitchers with good arms." Taylor, 20, was 2-2 with a 1.49 ERA in five starts and six relief appearances for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Peralta, 19, combined to go 2-3 with four saves and a 4.57 ERA in 27 relief appearances for Greenville, Lowell and the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2175951 f***ing Retarded
September 29, 200520 yr gave up 2 minor league pitchers for 4 games? If it was a difference maker I see no reason not to do it. They are on the brink of the playoffs and want to make it but I'm not convinced Stanton is a difference maker.
September 29, 200520 yr Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it past any sort of trading deadline? How does a deal like this go through?
September 29, 200520 yr I think he is just going to be a mop up guy, and an extra arm as we already got f*cked by that in the doubleheader Tuesday. Hopefully I can only forsee him pitching to Gumby or Godzilla if the situation arose. Plus, any info he could give on signs would be appreciated.
September 29, 200520 yr Who's been the lefty specialist this season for Boston? Embree is gone now, I know that.
September 29, 200520 yr Who's been the lefty specialist this season for Boston? Embree is gone now, I know that. Mike Meyers, he has done a good job over the past two years. Perisho was let go a few weeks back. He never made it up.
September 29, 200520 yr Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it past any sort of trading deadline? How does a deal like this go through? Thru waivers
September 29, 200520 yr Why don't we do this with AJ? He would never clear waivers. Oh, whoops, I could have sworn he did.
September 30, 200520 yr Perisho was let go a few weeks back. He never made it up. Actually, he was up for one game (September 2nd) - he gave up a double to the only batter he faced. Of course, he was vintage Perisho by allowing an inherited runner to score. Unlike many times with the Marlins, the person who hit the double eventually scored.
September 30, 200520 yr Moves going to backfire. Matsui will hit a game winning home run off Stanton. Hopefully the Sox will win the other 2.
September 30, 200520 yr Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it past any sort of trading deadline? How does a deal like this go through? I don't get it either. Someone said through waivers, but that doesn't make sense to me either. The deadline for dealing players who have passed through waivers is a month after the first deadline...at least it used to be.

Someone said through waivers, but that doesn't make sense to me either. The deadline for dealing players who have passed through waivers is a month after the first deadline...at least it used to be. Nah, the only deadline is for post-season rosters, so generally it serves no purpose to make a deal for a player after August 31st since they won't be on the playoff roster anyway. Trades like this happen to provide depth in the event of an injury or just general fatigue. If we had come out strong after Houston, and Andino just wasn't getting the job done, we likely would have made a similar trade for a team's back-up short-stop...
