Posted October 11, 200519 yr Feel free to add your own to the list Movie: Hero At Large Year: 1980 Rated: PG (Profanity, Mild Violence) Review: **1/2 out of 4 80's blast from the past called Hero At Large that starred John Ritter (Three's Company) as a struggling actor making appearances in costume as a movie superhero character named Captain Avenger. One night Ritter is leaving an appearance in costume and stops a convenience store robbery. When the media finds out that "Captain Avenger" foiled the crime, the role goes to Ritter's head, he realizes he enjoyed being a hero, and he starts on a life of crimefighting. While it may not be a great film (it could have used a bit more fleshing out of how Ritter is dealing with his double life, his career, his newfound fame and perhaps something more with the resolution of the mayor subplot), it has its moments and is worth watching if you like superhero movies or seeing John Ritter in a different role. Look fast in the beginning for a very young Kevin Bacon. Be warned: the movie was filmed in 1979, 70's fashions and low-value production techniques are all over it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Movie: Twice Upon a Time Year: 1983 Rated: PG (Profanity) Review: *** out of 4 Animated movie that was executive produced by George Lucas. The story concerns an evil maniac by the name of Synonamous Botch who wants to create nightmare bombs and keep the world in horrible dreams forever. It is up to the heroes Ralph the All-Purpose Animal and Mum the All-Purpose Nothing to save the day. Rod Rescueman is hilarious as the superhero in training who is a major screw-up. This film was in limited release and only received cult status after it was shown on HBO in 1984 (where I caught it). Unfortunately, this movie is only on VHS, but is a cartoon aimed at junior high kids to adults. The voice of Ralph was done by the late Lorenso Music (Garfield the Cat). Because Lucas produced this, there are occasional film snippets of his blockbusters popping up on occasion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Movie: Free Enterprise Year: 1999 Rated: R (Profanity, Brief Nudity) Review: *** out of 4 Cult movie starring Eric McCormack (pre Will and Grace), Rafer Wiegel, and William Shatner as himself. Two diehard trekkies who work for "B" movie studios meet Shatner and find out their Captain is not like Kirk in real-life. Their illusion of Shatner shattered, it only gets worse when Shatner comes to them wanting to do a musical movie of Julius Caesar in which heplays all the parts. Apparently, the major studios rejected his idea. This movie is for anyone who LOVES sci-fi and the film industry. The main characters and their buddies do nothing but use references from sci-fi tv shows and movies (such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Logan's Run) in their normal daily lives. One example, as the main characters pull into a TOys 'R Us parking lot, one character says "Almost there", then someone in the backseat says, "Stay on target" (Star Wars reference for those not in the know). Another reson why the film works is that Shatner has now reached the level where he can leave his ego at the door and make fun of himself. When he walks into a bar in one scene, everyone calls him "Hooker" (from TJ Hooker). ------------------------------------ Last on my list, is one a few ppl might know about Movie: Westworld Year: 1973 Rated: PG (Violence) Review: *** out of 4 This one is based on a Michael Crichton story and starred James Brolin, Richard Benjamin, Dick Van Patten, Majel Barrett, and Yul Brenner as the Gunslinger Robot. In the future, people go on vacation to a resort called Westworld where they can act out their fantasies with realistic looking robots (especially a very creepy Yul Brenner as the Gunslinger). A computer glitch causes the robots to go berzerk and start killing off the guests. Everytime I watch this one, I can see where James Cameron probably got his ideas for the Terminator a decade later. Very creepy movie, takes a little time to get going, but then it really takes off. An entire Simpsons episode was based on this movie (Itchy and Scratchy Land).
October 12, 200519 yr Movie: City of God Year: 2002 Rated: R Review: **** out of 4 Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a housing project built in the 1960's that--in the early 80's--became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. The tale tells the stories of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the eyes of a singular narrator: Busca-P?, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also to smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs. He grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But Busca-P? soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. Director Fernando Meirelles was nominated for an Academy Award for this film, it also went up for Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. I don't think it became popular in the mainstream, but I don't really follow the movie industry that closely. Regardless, fantastic movie, everyone should give it a watch.

You, sir, have helped solve a great mystery for me. There's a song by Stephen Malkmus about Yul Brenner that includes the lyrics: Perhaps you saw me in westworld I acted like a robotic cowboy It was my best role I can not deny I Felt right home deep inside That electronic carcass Now if you could explain about that electronic carcass I'd be very appreciative.
October 13, 200519 yr Author Electronic carcass just means the robot body. Remove the skin and it's all wires and circuits. Westworld also is credited for a cinematic first. It was the first movie to use what kind of technology (altho very briefly)? (HINT: Think recent Lucas movies)

October 13, 200519 yr Close, need to be a bit more specific...Think along the lines of modern cameras If I weren't lazy, I'd just google this. It must be some kind of DIGITAL FX. Anything more specific than that and the words you're looking for probably are not in my vocabulary. Out with it!
October 13, 200519 yr Author DIGITAL is correct...Westworld was credited with being the first film to use a digitally recorded image

October 15, 200519 yr "Miracle In Milan" by Vittorio de Sica. One of my favorite "foreign" films. Good luck finding it, though -- it's not available on video/DVD in the US (try eBay).
October 16, 200519 yr The Life of David Gale... Maybe some of you have heard of it or seen it but whenever I tell people how great I thought it was, they say they have never heard of it. *shrug*
October 16, 200519 yr Maybe Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni? Wonderful movie. Even better without the overdub. But I am willing to bet most people have probably never seen it.

October 17, 200519 yr People might have heard of this The 6th man Featuring: Marlon Wayans j4J:www.ithink-hesdead.net/marlon/images/gallery/marlon09.jpg **** out of 4 This sports comedy from Class Act (1992) and Houseguest (1995) director Randall Miller stars Kadeem Hardison and Marlon Wayans as basketball-playing brothers. The Tylers have been dreaming of stardom on the court since childhood. Now that they are the top players for the Washington Huskies, Antoine (Haridson) has become the more flamboyant and attention-getting of the pair. While Kenny (Wayans) is also a talented athlete, he lacks the self-confidence to become a star like his brother. When Antoine suffers a fatal heart attack during play, Kenny is grief-stricken, and the team's chances of making it through the Pac-10 to the NCAA finals become seriously diminished. Luckily, Antoine's ghost returns to give the Huskies a helping hand by blocking shots, tipping the ball through the hoop, tripping opposing team members, and even giving players a supernatural lift on their way to the basket. Only Kenny can see his brother's spirit, but a beautiful school newspaper reporter, R.C. (Michael Michele) suspects the truth. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide It is more of a comedy then drama, but in a way it is a drama. Probably my favorite movoe ever. People might have heard of it, but I figured that I would throw it out there.
