HOUSTON -- New Marlins manager Joe Girardi has made his first hire, adding Bobby Meacham as his third-base coach.

Meacham, 45, spent last season as a minor league infield instructor in the Rockies system. Previously he managed in the Pirates organization.

He replaces Jeff Cox, the Marlins third-base coach the past two seasons.

Meacham spent six seasons in the major leagues as an infielder, all with the Yankees. He hit just .236 in his career, which was spent mostly as a reserve.

His best year was 1985, when he was the Yankees regular shortstop, appearing in 156 games and driving in 47 runs. He twice led the American League in sacrifice hits, with a career high of 23 in 1985.

I'm gonna miss Jeff Cox's flip-a-coin technique for choosing whether to send runners home.

It has begun!

Hopefully we will hear all too soon the decisions such as Stottlemeyer or Wiley, and who the new hitting coach will be.

im not gonna miss Jeff Cox ... although he always seemed like a nice guy. But as a coach Ill pass

Jeff Cox: Great guy horrendous Third Base Coach

I have never heard of this guy. Guess it's a guy Girardi played with while playing for Rockies?

that about sums it up

i remember one day in the players parking lot a guy got thrown out at the dish and we weret alking to himi and every other word was f*** he was so pist lol

I'm not going to miss Jeff "stop sign" Cox, but the stories I've heard about him make me belive he's an incredibly nice guy, so I'll refrain from saying anything more than change is good.

Jeff Cox was really nice, always waved to the fans sitting above the Marlins dugout and whatnot... but a horrible 3rd base coach.

I think I remember Meacham playing for the Yankees back in '84 or '85

He can't be worse than Cox.

We should have put an escalator clause in his contract for regrowing that afro.

That'd be worth an extra 100 grand in my book.

And that 4th picture is awesome.

Yeah - real nice guy. I went to a fan-club clinic at JRS last year & he led one of the groups, instructing on basic infield skills. Surprisingly, Jeff is fluent in Spanish, because he managed in Mexico for several years.

Would pimp dadddy lenny b ag dood hittin cpoach if he retires thiss ffof season?

If we could get the Big Cat as our hitting coach, THAT would be awesome.

Galarraga would be HUGE because of the Venezuela connection. A-Gon might be more inclined to stay, plus an older Venezuelan in the clubhouse might help to settle Cabrera down a bit.
