October 28, 200520 yr Jong-Soo Shim- Korean slugger wants to be first Koren Pro Player to play in America and he has field for free agency...during the offseason, many teams contcated the RF, a defensive wiz and 220lb. slugger I didn't give this much thought until I looked up on google for a picture of him just out of curiosity, and came across this: Notice what hat he's wearing? Might Loria and Beinfest have a nice little plan in the works? Him in RF and Hermida in LF?

October 28, 200520 yr Author More info, we are already familiar with him: The other Korean hitting star, the 29-year-old Shim, also impressed in the spring of 2003, hitting over .300 with a home run and three RBI in limited duty for Florida. Returning home, Shim had a standout 2003 season, when he logged a .335 average, 53 homers and 142 RBIs. Defensively, Shim is very strong. His arm is recognized as best in the KBO and he has won two consecutive Golden Glove awards. After the 2003 season, for the second consecutive year, Shim unsuccessfully requested for his contract to be posted, making him available to the Major Leagues. Korean rules lock players into a seven-year contract before they can be posted and nine years before they can become a free agent. As a result, Shim remained contractually-bound to the Hyundai Unicorns for the 2004 season. So, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Shim, nicknamed Hercules, stayed home. After missing the first two months with a knee injury, he registered a .256 average with 22 home runs and 74 RBIs. His .385 on-base percentage shows excellent plate discipline for a power hitter. Shim helped to lead his Unicorns to a repeat as KBO champions this past season. Most importantly, this fall, Shim completed his contract, enabling him to negotiate with any team with no strings attached. Shim, already fluent in English, has retained the SFX agency to represent him. Other SFX free agent clients include Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez. If we can sign him to a cheap, or at least feasible contract, minor league w/ invite to spring training, and he plays good enough to win the job, I'd be all for it. Seems like he'd be a very good 6 or 7 hitter.

If he does sign with an ML team it will be for several million. We don't have that type of money to blow on an unproven hitter from the Korean leagues.

October 29, 200520 yr It seems to me that we already have enough options in the outfield for 2006 without designating a roster spot to someone who so little is known about. That isn't to say we can't improve through a trade on our current crop of outfielders and wouldbe outfielders, but this seems the longest of longshots and conceivably confuses things more than it helps.

November 1, 200520 yr look it really doesnt matter until someone is moved from this team. hermidia is starting in rf most likely. lowell will start at 3b cabrera lf, pierre cf, delgado 1b... until you make a move you really cant do anything.
