October 31, 200519 yr BOSTON ? (AP) ? Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein resigned Monday, a stunning move that surprised the baseball world one year after he helped build Boston's first World Series championship team since 1918. The 31-year-old Epstein was reportedly offered about $4.5 million for a three-year extension ? quadruple his previous salary. But it was still short of the $2.5 million a year the Red Sox offered Oakland's Billy Beane in 2002 before making Epstein the youngest GM in baseball history. ??He did resign,'' Red Sox spokesman Charles Steinberg said. According to the Boston Herald, which first reported the news on its Web site, Epstein went through ??agonizing soul-searching'' as he considered whether to continue working for team president Admin Lucchino, whom he followed from Baltimore to San Diego to Boston.
October 31, 200519 yr WOW. Boston is going to hunt down Admin Luchino. Gammons is also reporting many of the people in the front office now will be going to Arizona. As a person who roots for Red Sox (no not a "fan") this is a horrible day. As a Marlins fan and John Henry-hater this is a great day.
October 31, 200519 yr wow, i thought it was a done deal, Sox are gonna pay for this bad move..... It wasn't Boston's fault. It was Theo who decided to call it quits in Boston. Gammons reports it had nothing to do with money.

November 1, 200519 yr I'm sure money was involved, but I think it had to do more with not being able to run the team he wanted to without Admin L getting in the way. ANd if that is the reason, I can't help but respect his decision.
November 1, 200519 yr hopefully he's replaced by Brian Sabean :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol I didn't know you hated the Red Sox so much.
November 1, 200519 yr Yeah right. Of course it was about the money. :thumbup Parity with what the Red Sox offered Billy Beane.
November 1, 200519 yr Rumor has it an article published during the weekend that had Lucchino's fingerprints all over it (according to Theo) also had something to do with this. Lucchino for those who didn't know also had a part in Josh Byrnes' departure.
November 1, 200519 yr This means Red Sox will have to hire a new GM which beckons the question if Francona's days could be numbered as inevitably when a new GM is hired, the old manager tends to go out
November 1, 200519 yr OCH!!! SUCK FOR THE RED SOX! He may sign witht he Phillies... BOSTON -- In a move that sent a Halloween night jolt across Red Sox Nation, Theo Epstein, the general manager of his hometown team the last three years, decided to leave the organization instead of accepting a new contract. Epstein's contract was set to expire at midnight ET on Monday. Less than six hours before that deadline, the Red Sox released a statement confirming that Epstein's memorable regime -- which included three consecutive postseason appearances and the fabled franchise's first World Series championship in 86 years -- was over. "The Boston Red Sox and Theo Epstein today announced that the senior vice president/general manager has declined the club's offer to extend his contract for future years and thus will step down from his post," the club said in a statement. "Epstein will continue, however, to work with the organization for several days to assist in an orderly transition and to prepare further for the upcoming GM meetings and other offseason activities." Epstein is now free to work for any team in the Major Leagues, though it remains to be seen how quickly he will pursue new opportunities. There are currently general manager vacancies with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb
November 1, 200519 yr When I came home late last night to see this news, I was shocked and saddened. I think Theo made the best decision for himself and I will support him wherever he ends up if that is Los Angeles or some job down the line. I think this is a case of Admin Lucchino bringing in a young unknown former Baltimore Oriole interin in Epstein that he thought he would be able to mold and manipulate to how he saw fit. The problem was, Epstein became better then Lucchino ever thought, and it became a power struggle. Henry bumped up the deal, Epstein would have gotten his money he just wasnt going to be Lucchino's lap dog, and I dont blame him. Theo got us that world series ring, and anyone who thinks else, is a fool. It was Theo who took a depleted farm system and now has stocked it with Jon Paplebon, Dustin Pedoria, David Murphy, Abe Alvarez, Jacoby Ellerby, Chris Hansen, and Luis Soto...all players gotten in the Theo reign. He was the one who sent two low minor leaguers to Cincy for second baseman Todd Walker, who would be big in the 2003 post season run. He signed Mike Timlin in early '03, a man who has become a rock in this organization. He signed former has been Bill Mueller in early '03 a man who went on to win an AL batting title and start on the World Champion team. It was Theo who signed David Ortiz for just 1.25 million, Ortiz has now become one of the best hitters in either league. He was the one to pick Bronson Arroyo up off waivers, a young player who won 24 games for us and was another great piece in the run for the championship in 2004. He got Kevin Millar to not go to Japan, to come to Boston, and he changed the dynamic of the Red Sox clubhouse and had two productive years in 03 and 04. Theo acquired Gabe Kapler from Colorado, a dirt bag player who became the most liked of his teammates and gave his all when he got a chance to play the outfield. It was Theo who ate Thanksgiving Dinner with Curt Schilling in his home and convinced him to come to Boston, a move that would have Schilling compete for the Cy Young and become a post season hero in 2004. He signed Keith Foulke from Oakland. Foulke was his teammates MVP in the 2004 post season. He went out and acquired Mark Bellhorn who had some huge home runs and hits in the 2004 post season. Theo had the stones that few others would have when he traded Nomar Garciaparra to the Chicago Cubs in a three way deal that netted them Orlando Cabrera who solidifed their infield defense and Doug Mientkiewicz who also became the 'defensive closer' at first base the rest of the season. Theo saw when Steve Finley was traded to LA in 04 that former starter Dave Roberts was out of luck, and he went and got Dave Roberts on the cheap. Roberts stole a base in the 2004 ALCS Game 4 that saved the series for Boston and propelled them to the 04 world series. In my opinion, that was the greatest play in Red Sox history. I will always believe Theo was the biggest reason we got to the World Series in 2004. I respect how calm and level headed Theo always was with the media. I will miss Theo not revealing anything in his comments. I will miss Theo's massive stones, not caring about the tenacious media and doing what needed to be done to help this team. You will be missed Theo.

Above Carlton Fisk's shot in the 75 world series? dont think so but i agree with your post. Theo made so many moves (Roberts included) that propelled the Sawx to the title

November 1, 200519 yr Theo will roll into Los Angeles as long as he is given the freedom he should be allowed to have. The Red Sox have nobody but themselves to blame for losing Theo. Good job.
