Rey Ordonez, who has been out of baseball for a year and a half, hopes to make a comeback next spring and would like to do so with the Marlins.

It's hard to imagine Ordonez contributing at age 35. He's no longer good enough to start, and even if he's still above average defensively at shortstop, he would hardly be useful off the bench. Nov. 6 - 4:08 am et

I say no thanks.

I concur.

There are so many better alternatives out there...but he does see the handwriting on the wall, Gonzalez (and maybe Castillo) are gone.

NO WAY.

Guy couldn't hit off a tee.

Id let him in on the spring training roster.

why not take a look in spring at the base invitee salary for a backup role? It cant hurt.

Chance are he wouldn't show much, but I wouldn't be averse to giving him a spot on the ST roster.

Invite him to ST and see, can't hurt.

Easley had hit in the past. Ordonez has never been able to hit. Couldn't hit water if he fell off a boat.

That's true... and he actually did fall off the boat onto America.

Offense is overrated anyway.

There's no harm is giving him a shot in spring training. Worst case is he doesn't make the team, big deal.

Not that it would be a roster risk, but given the presence of whomever we have to be the starting short-stop (be it Nomar, Gonzalez, Clayton, etc.) Josh Wilson, Robert Andino and potentially Damion Easley, it would just be a waste of everyone's time. Plus, Andino figures to be the AAA short-stop, so for Wilson it's either the Marlins' bench or...where? So I don't see a space for Ordonez.

Ordonez does however offer an incredibly intriguing low-cost option while keeping above average short-stop defense at a low cost, but it is a big risk to count on him given his layoff. Then again, I don't think anyone, including Ordonez himself, thinks of him as a starting option...

Winner!

He'd be on the bench anyways. Big deal.

Rey Ordonez? Come on, give me a break, the guy is old news. I cant even remember when I last saw him play a game. I think he was with the mets or something like that, he's been around.

He's 35??? Well, I feel old now.

''He's 35??? Well, I feel old now.'' Ya, if your a baseball player.

Age, per se, isn't the question here, it's ability.

If age were the problem then Roger Clemens would have retired 8-10 years ago and Jeff Conine wouldn't have hit .304 last season.

Ordonez is a career .240 +/- hitter who time has passed by. I agree with Swifty that we have enough options already and I suspect some more legitimate ones on the way.

I also want to be on the fish, Rey.

Lolololol...I was going to say that but I thought it was in bad taste...it's funnier when someone else says it. :D

Funny, he was my favorite player growing up.

I'm sure it happens to other teams too, but i think it's interesting how older players come out and say they want to play for us...

I'll pass

They want to live in South Florida.

Good as a backup infielder. Good speed and glove.

He's 35. I doubt he's as quick as we remember. Not to mention he hasn't played in a year.
