Nov 8 - The word is that Sanders is attracting a "boatload" of interest this winter, an American League general manager told ESPN.com Insider Jerry Crasnick. After signing five one-year deals with different NL clubs from 1999-2003, Sanders should have enough leverage to command a second straight multi-year contract.

The Cardinals, Twins, Marlins, Royals and Mariners are among the teams thought to be interested in Sanders.

Sanders was on track to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases before he suffered a hairline fracture of his right leg shortly after the All-Star break. He still finished with 21 homers in 295 at-bats, and hit .333 with 10 RBI in 12 at-bats against San Diego in the NL Division Series.

Sanders, who turns 38 in December, needs eight homers and three stolen bases to join Willie Mays, Andre Dawson and Bobby and Barry Bonds as the fifth player in history with 300 of each.

I will link it but it is espn insider.

He's too old and we have capable outfielders on the team.

I rather spend the money used to sign him on a starting pitcher and a few relievers.

Unless Loria wants to everyone look silly on lowering payroll. :mischief

Um, outfield is not an issue on this team.

Why are we not looking at shortstops and relievers?

Because we hava a FA on our team in Seabass and a rookie in Andino that are better than most of the options out there.

Andino is not better then Furcal....get it done.

Yeah I've been hearing about that aswell.. Sanders, when healthy, can still produce and there's no denying that but you can if you want. He was well on his way to a 30/30 year and then the collision with Edmonds happened and he was out for a while. He was easily on some days our best hitter in the lineup and that was with Albert playing too. He had a great NLDS but the NLCS he didnt do much. Probably a combination of playing Houston a million times and he's a streaky hitter.

Still a pretty solid player despite his age but I wouldnt give him any more than a one year contract. I could see him back with St. Louis though.

Furcal would be a horrible addition to this team...and Seabass is better than him anyway, Grudzalinek is not a SS, I'd take Seabass and Andino over Clayton, Aurilia, and Alex S Gonzalez, and Nomar will be too expensive.

Defensively he is.

I dont care about your sig. Furcal is a singles hitter with little pop. We have two of them already in Castillo and Pierre. We led the NL in batting average but struggled to score runs, what would adding Furcal and, on what our team with our weak defensive 1B, his horrible defense add? He would be A HORRIBLE ADDITION!

I really hate having to own you like this, but look at the career totals. Furcal hits for higher average, has a higher OBP, and has a higher slugging percentage. And for those not in the know (like you), slugging percentage is a metric of amount of bases from the hits. Just for giggles, a defensive comparison...

Furcal: 15 E 119 DP .981 F% 5.23 RF9

Gonzalez: 16 E 102 DP .974 F% 4.87 RF9

So, um, which one has the better defense?

Furcal's Defense is so bad that when ESPN had a list of FA's who were Fielding Gold Glove potential, they included Furcal...Awful awful awful.....

:lol What did you see from Andino that makes you think he is major league ready? Was it the .159 Batting average?

I can be 100% wrong but I don't see any merit in a discussion that includes the Marlins signing Furcal when just about everyone realizes we'll be cutting payroll and probably letting Gonzo walk because we don't want to pay him the $4-5 million a year he's seeking.

Maybe we aren't paying him $4-5 million a year not because we're cutting payroll, but we believe we can get a better player on the open market. I truly believe the front office cares more about production than sentimentality. Some of you guys need to remember that just because the guy turned the tide of the World Series with a swing means we have to give him contracts he isn't worth.

Who said anything about sentimentality?

Oh, it was you :p

too old no thanks.

Too expensive, we will easily be out-bidded by the Cubs and the Mets who also have their eyes set on him
