November 10, 200520 yr Carpenter was the clear choice...walked less batters, struck out more, had a better BAA, WHIP, record...the only thing that Dontrelle had better was his era, and if you're going by ERA, then you gotta give the award to Clemens...also, the only reason why he had a better ERA was because of the ballpark and the defense behind him
November 10, 200520 yr Mays24Bonds25: What about his WHIPWMOBAOB? I hear Dontrelle Willis' was 4 notches lower than Chris Carpenter's.
November 10, 200520 yr I will take the guy with a better ERA and more wins. will you also take the guy with five more losses and lower K count, higher WHIP, higher opponent batting average, lower IP? I'm not trying to sound like I'm rubbing it in, but I'm just saying that Carpenter deserved this just as much as Willis did. Frankly I'm surprised that the voters didn't go for Clemens because of his ERA but I guess that frowned on alot of short outtings. I really thought it was a toss up between all three pitchers, it had to land somewhere and it just something about Chris appealed to the voters. FACT: In those 5 losses, D-Train had an ERA of 1.80. You obviously have never seen a Marlins game in your LIFE. Do you have any idea how many times D-Train brought a game into the 8th or 9th only to have the bullpen blow it and have him get the loss? in two of those 5 losses he only gave up a SINGLE run, yet still got the loss because our offense was so pathetic and we got shut out by guys like AARON HEILMAN. I have no problem with Cardinal fans defending their guy, but don't come onto a Marlins board talking about things you have not the slightest clue about.

November 10, 200520 yr the only reason why he had a better ERA was because of the ballpark and the defense behind him ..and yet, DTrain's home ERA (2.69) was higher than his road ERA (2.56).. which coincidently is lower than Carpenter's road ERA (2.90). Oh, and the Marlins had more errors (103) than the Cardinals (100).
November 10, 200520 yr Congrats to Chris Capenter. He and Dontrelle had great season and in almost any other season Dontrelle would have won it.

I'm not making any arguments against Carpenter, i'm only making arguments FOR the D-Train. But to answer your question, yes I did watch most of Carpenter's starts when it became apparent that he was a Cy Young candidate mid-way through the season.
November 10, 200520 yr bottom line is that both chris and dontrelle had great seasons. to argue who was more deserving is silly at this point. its over and done with. a deciding factor probably went into the fact that chris lead his team to the playoffs. Dontrelle didnt. Like it or not, thats just how it goes.

Oh, and the Marlins had more errors (103) than the Cardinals (100). DIPS ERA- A pitcher's ERA, independent of the defense behind him. This formula, based on essays by Voros McCracken, assumes that all pitchers have consistent BIPA (Balls in play average), and adjusts accordingly. The DIPS ratios on ESPN use the DIPS 2.0 formula, are not park-adjusted, and do not adjust for knuckleball pitchers. Carpenter: 3.09 Willis 3.2 Also, you can't just home and away stats to factor how much the park affects them...there are too many intangibles Had it been last year, Dontrelle would have been deserving of the Cy Young in a landslide...this year, he just wasn't as good as Carpenter...that's the luck of the draw The only case you can make for Dontrelle over Carpenter is ERA...if you're going to put him ahead of Carpenter because of that, you gotta put Clemens ahead of Willis for the same reason
November 10, 200520 yr I think Dontrelle didn't really sneak back into the race until the last 6 weeks of the season. For most of the season, the debate was Clemens vs. Carpenter. Once Clemens dropped out of the race, I think for some voters Carpenter became a foregone conclusion. Both pitchers had a great season, but I don't really see an arguement for Carpenter over Dontrelle, besides perhaps the losses. I don't personally believe that losses should have anything to do with it--at leat not when we're talking about a couple of guys with 20+ wins--but someone might able to put forth an arguement and convince me otherwise. However, you can throw all that WHIP and BAA and Ks stuff out the window. It frustrates me when people make reference to that stuff when justifying their Cy Young leanings. Why on earth does any of that stuff matter?
November 10, 200520 yr "He just wasn't as good as Carpenter" - :lol you're hopeless nope, unlike you I can see this from an objective perspective
November 10, 200520 yr You objective?! :lol - Thanks for making my day You are a Marlins hater through and through.

November 10, 200520 yr :::sigh::: Congrats Carp That's the best response I've seen yet on this board since the award was announced.
November 10, 200520 yr The funny thing is Mays24Bonds25 is probably on the cards board saying how carpenter didn't deserve it...he does stuff like that.
November 11, 200520 yr I think watching Carpenter chew gum is more irritating than his smile...I've never seen someone look like such a cocky a**hole just by chewing gum :lol :lol I've always thought the same thing. :lol

November 11, 200520 yr Updated Cardinals site article.. Carpenter nabs Cy Young honors Ace joins Gibson as only Redbirds to win award By Matthew Leach / MLB.com "That is an amazing thing," Carpenter said of being in a class with Gibson. "I was just telling my wife after I found out that I won, you think about the Cardinals organization and the history of this organization, how many people, how may pitchers came through this organization, how many great pitchers came through this organization, how many great seasons all those guys had, and to be the only one besides Mr. Gibson to win the Cy Young is crazy. This organization has been around for a long time with a lot of great history, a lot of great pitchers, and to be in that company is just crazy." No other pitcher received any higher than a third-place vote. Roy Oswalt of Houston was third on two ballots, and the Nationals' Chad Cordero and the Astros' Andy Pettitte received one mention each. "I voted for Dontrelle in both the other two awards, the Players Choice and for The Sporting News," said Carpenter. "The things that I look at are guys that as a competitor, I know that they're doing the same things that I do. And I know that Dontrelle does that, and I know that Roger does that. I know that they go out and they work their [rear end] off four days in between starts to get ready for the fifth day. I know they're going to do everything they can to win that game. I enjoy competing against guys like that. "There's no question about it, the guys that they considered for this award all deserved it. I was the fortunate one to get the votes from the media, and I appreciate that." {More in URL}
November 11, 200520 yr Both Cy Young awards should have been given the NL. Colon didn't deserve one. that's the luck of the draw sometimes

Who gives a crap how many guys flew out and how many struck out and how many people walked and who got on base when? If your ERA is lower than another guys your were better/more dominating. Period.
