I believe we will have a payroll around 80 million if we were to keep this team intact. Well we all know we can't do that so a lot of our key players next year won't be back. This team has to realize that next year we won't have near the kind of talent as we do now. This is going to be our best chance to make the playoffs in the next couple of years. They have to start playing with some urgency and come out to play tomorrow.

Sure, everyone knows they have to start winning, but I feel pretty optimistic about next year. We have Dontrelle, Chad Fox, Miggy, and a lot of other players who can step up and win next year. We also have Beinfest who definetly helps. I think we have a great chance to finish with a winning record, and, if our young talent develops quickly. we could be the wild card surprise for two straight years!

I doubt Chad Fox comes back next year. Is he on a one year contract like every single damn player on this team other than Pierre?

Slaps,

Why are you bringing this up? It makes no sense, last time I checked we were supposed to contend in 2005 according to Berardino.

That was when he thought we wouldn't contend this year, remember? :lol

My point is--we can contend next year! We will still have Lowell, and it is possible that we will resign I-Rod.

When are Beckett and Redman FAs?

Sorry bro but Ivan ain't going to take a home town discount I'm sorry, but I'd rather sign two or three good players and start Ramon than keep Pudge.

This is true and necessary because even if Loria wanted to keep the team intact he would lose some big time money, because the revenue just isnt at that level to support a larger payroll. If attendance continues to rise and the TV deals keep rolling in, revenues will rise and a larger payroll will be feasible.

100 % chance of being back next year- Willis,Bump,Pierre,Encarnacion,Cabrera

that a chunk of our lineup there

Nielsosky's right we still can contend next year

plues i think we'll still have most of our rotation

Hey kids!

This isn't last year.

How about we worry about this year and the Wild Card race and then discuss this when it's all over.

K! :thumbup

Sorry but Encarnacion and Pierre will never carry a lineup...Cabs will someday.

Well, no. No two players can carry a line-up, not even Albert Pujols and Barry Bonds. But Encarnacion has the potential to be a very good hitter, like maybe a 300 hitter, and we have seen what Pierre can do! These guys could not make the Tigers instant 90 game winners, but they can do a lot to help whatever team they're on, and I hope that team is the Marlins. Do you think we would be .5 games back without Pierre and Encarnacion?

SlapHands I disagree. I think they could still be strong next year. Pudge will most likely be gone, but people are dying to see what Castro can do as a full-time starter. They have the opportunity to bring back the entire starting rotation if they want. The only other player they're sure to lose is either Lee or Castillo. And a few bullpen guys certainly, but you see how easy it is to pick up an arm or two late in the year if you're contending. I think they'll be okay.

I'm excited to see what Admin (who WILL be Executive of the Year) can put together next year. We MIGHT even be able to keep Luis if we can save enough money and if he doesn't draw the $ he wants...

The Seattle Mariner strategy worked only out of pure luck. Gillick just got plain lucky that Bret Boone transformed himself from a career mediocre 2B to the monster 2B he is now, and Mark McLemore had the 2 best years of his career at ages 36 and 37. If Boone performed at his normal level pre-Seattle and McLemore performed around his career norms, Seattle would've been also-rans the past few years. It also didn't hurt that they were stocked with some of the best pitching prospects in the game at the minor league level.
