December 5, 200520 yr His age and price tag are a little too high for the Marlins. He'll probably go to the Mets in exchange for a Mets baseball cap.
December 5, 200520 yr He threw out under 20% of base-stealers, so I hope he's not the idea behind the plate, but for some reason, he's continually viewed as a catcher. I may be really in the minority, but I think that barring some other move, he's our catcher to start the year.
December 5, 200520 yr I really don't want him behind the plate, but if we are going to do it, at least he should learn from Girardi.
December 5, 200520 yr How is he defensively and can he manage a game behind the plate. By most accounts he's below-average defensively behind the plate. I have no idea about his "game calling" abilities. I think it's possible he could split time with Treanor at catcher, but IMO he'll get the majority of his starts in the outfield.

Considering Girardi was a no offense good defensive catcher I believe he will go with Treanor before he uses Willy.
December 5, 200520 yr I think we'd be better off keeping him in the OF, but I really have no idea what the Marlins have planned for him.
December 5, 200520 yr The only thing that has been reported is that he is slow to shifting to a throwing position. But it's pretty much universally assumed (why? I don't know and no one else does) that he will never be a catcher in the majors. Or Girardi realizes that was a flaw in his game and will not make the same mistake(s) in his managerial career.
December 5, 200520 yr He only started to learn how to catch in 2004... from all accounts he's not learned quickly.
December 5, 200520 yr He learned in late 2002. Suffered an injury and missed much of the 2003 season.
December 5, 200520 yr He has a sweet little swing and is patient at the plate. Behind the plate, though, he looks like crap. His tenure in 2004 behind the plate was full of pass balls, teams running all over him, and a least one obstruction call, and one game where he gave up a critical run because he didn't touch the plate with his foot on a force play. I'm sure he is better now but, man, he left a really crappy first impression on me as a catcher.
December 5, 200520 yr Is Willingham going to be the starting catcher or are we possibly going to make a trade for Toby Hall?
December 5, 200520 yr We threw two mediocre catchers out there in 2004 and you all saw what happened...
December 5, 200520 yr I think we will not re-sign Conine and put Willy in left field and Treanor behind the plate.
December 5, 200520 yr I think we will not re-sign Conine and put Willy in left field and Treanor behind the plate. That statement is almost as sickening as your avatar...
December 5, 200520 yr I don't see anyone can be satisfied with Matt Treanor as a backup. He can't hit at all. I would guess that Girardi doesn't have much choice, he'll have to figure some things out. Either way Willy is gonna need to find a position and shine on offense.
December 5, 200520 yr Girardi should be a player-manager or whatever they were back in the day... I was about to post that myself I mean he's already under contract...
December 5, 200520 yr If Willingham is in left field and Treanor behind the plate....who is the back up to Treanor? We have no one but Pierre in the bullpen......we have to be looking for someone...somewhere....are we really serious in getting Charles Johnson back? I know Gerardi wants a seasoned catcher to help the young pitchers.......
December 5, 200520 yr Having Jacobs, Willingham and Treanor capable of playing catcher is enough. People keep suggesting putting Jacobs back behind the plate but almost everything written suggests his shoulder surgery ended his catching career, hence the move to first.
