Gathright & Gomes?

Featured Replies

11. JONNY GOMES, of, Durham Bulls (Devil Rays)

...he's rough defensively as a corner outfielder.

After watching Miguel Cabrera play the corners I think I can live with Jonny Gomes. :p

Olsen and Gaby for Gomes and Gathright?

think that is a little better then giving up Pettit too. I think Gaby has a lower ceiling and not as far along as pettit.

I agree Gaby has a bit lower ceiling, but he could very well turn out better. He's younger and who knows. But honestly, if it took Petit to get the deal done--git r done.

I dont see the Marlins trading what arguably was the centerpiece in the Delgado trade

Ah I hate when players are valued based on who they were dealt for. It's all about pride when you incorporate such tactics. And the centerpiece for the Delgado trade wasn't Petit--it was Jacobs.

Wrong it was Petit.

We definitely had this conversation a couple days ago. It was originally Jacobs and Milledge. But then it changed to Jacobs and Petit. Jacobs was the centerpiece.

With the range Gathright should have with his speed and Hermida is more then above average in RF we can live with a LF witha little weaker arm.

Good point. I can handle a few misplayed balls if he can produce offensively.

Petit!!!!!!!!!

This is much better. I'm down with trading Olsen in a package for Gomes and Gaitright, but not with Olsen being paired with either Petit or Hernandez. I'd consider Olsen and Johnson, because Johnson doesn't seem to have as much tremendous upside potential (Hubie Brown!) as some of the other prospects, though I'd still be hesitant to do even that because of my disdain for players like Gathright.

When can last year's draft picks be traded, if the Rays would be interested in any of them not named Volstad?

With the range Gathright should have with his speed and Hermida is more then above average in RF we can live with a LF witha little weaker arm.

So we will have a defense liability in LF who projects more as a DH who also happens to have a below average arm to go along with it. Gathright arm is also below average which means runners will tag up on us all day.

Also remember this........

The Tigers tried to acquire Devil Rays closer Danys Baez before signing free-agent closer Todd Jones to a two-year, $11 million contract. The Rays asked for two top prospects ? right-hander Joel Zumaya and center fielder Curtis Granderson ? and a third minor leaguer. The Tigers would have been more comfortable trading players like center fielder Nook Logan and Double-A right-hander Humberto Sanchez. ...

Just scary.....

Petit!!!!!!!!!

It doesnt matter who was the centerpiece...we have a boat load of pitchers, some of which are expendable...jacobs is just sick...and unless stokes is doing something we dont know about, jacobs will be a lock at first and will probably protect migs at the plate...you got to value jacobs higher

Why would they trade Gomes?

They Won't.

OMG am I going to win the lottery? Please oh knowledgeable one, let me know!!!

Just an observation, but deals that are talked about as much as this, and make so much sense for one team (IE: Olsen for Gathright) rarely happen, especially with Beinfest.

Whenever we have a deal "in place" like the Burnett to Baltimore deal, it usually falls apart.

Yes, I would love to have Gathright Gomes and Hermida in the outfield for the forseeable future, but I don't want Olsen dealt. Just because Crawford, Young and Baldelli make Gomes and Gathright expendable doesn't mean we have to pay a premium price, and if it does, just move on...

Gomes currently makes $ 300,000, hit 21 HR's with a .282 average and an OPS of .906

yeah, he's number one on the trade block... esp. for a poor prospect...

If we trade Olsen, we still have a very nice 2007 rotation:

Willis, Vargas, Sanchez, Johnson, _____

and in 2008, if everything goes accordingly (which sometimes it doesn't!):

Willis, Sanchez, Vargas, Volstad, Nolasco.

Now you're talking! (and of course seeing as how West or Pinto or any of those guys could just rocket to superstardom all of the sudden, it's hard to look that far into the future).

poor prospect?

Olsen for Gathright heavily favors Tampa (please don't deny this, as you will make yourself seem retarded, for lack of a better word). Add in Petit and Gomes, and you have a relatively even deal.

what makes you think the Rays are going to add one of their biggest offensive threats from last year for a pitcher that's not exactly a blue chip spec.

I believe the Rays would rather keep Gomes as DH and trade Huff than trade 25 year old Gomes, that makes 300k and isn't eligible for arbitration until 2007.

If Lester's an "untouchable" Olsen and Petit are both blue-chip.

I still think this Petit-Olsen deal heavily favors Tampa, although it could no longer be classified as "robbery" it's still a run away win for the Rays.

I think the Rays will keep him, too. I'm just citing what I think would be necessary to get the trade done.

Olsen/Petit for Gathright/Gomes is fair, although I don't believe TB would do it.

It does, but like I said before--if our FO values an Olsen/Gathright deal, then adding Petit to get Gomes would make it more bearable for us.

Petit, Psomas, Willingham, Stokes, Allison.

I'd rather keep these players. They may not all be great. They may not be productive major leaguers. But I'd rather them give them a shot in our organization than throw them off when their value is low.

I agree about Allison, Willy and Psomas.

But Stokes will never get a shot at this team because of Jacobs, so his value won't get much higher than it is....unless he completely sky rockets in the minors next year.

And Petit's value may increase later on, but I'd rather have our core set 'now' so that they can play together and bond as a team. That's how our 2003 championship came about.

and being that he will be playing in the PCL, I fully expect him to have a big year... if healthy

as much as our new ownership wants to build for the future, they also want to win now so that they can win the fans back.

I just don't believe they would trade one of their offensive standouts for a pitcher that won't work his way up for a few seasons.

jmo.

Hmmm I dont see where it says it is Pettit that is added here. Why not Olsen and Gaby? Olsen and West? Olsen and Vargas even. It dont see where it says Pettit in this.

I beleive someone is just assuming it is pettit
