Gathright & Gomes?

The Marlins want center fielder Joey Gathright from the Devil Rays, and would love to expand the deal to include right fielder Jonny Gomes. The teams should be a decent match, given the Marlins' surplus of young pitching. If the Marlins fail to land Gathright, they might simply use Eric Reed in center. Reed surprised team officials by performing better at Triple A last season than he did at Double A. ...

now we're talkin

starting to not suck as much...

Olsen and Petit for for Gomes and Gathright

basically we are trading olsen and petit for gomes and gathright thrown in...i'd rather not.

If the Marlins were willin to give up Olsen for Gathright (you have to believe it as it has appeared on several reliable sources), then you're basically adding in Petit for Gomes...

Ya I'd do it.

I have been against Olsen for Gathright but the more we wait, the more obvious it is that the Fish are willing to do it. So if that's true, maximize the gain and get Gomes for another pitching prospect.

Again I rather not trade with the Devil Rays. Read the paragraph below the Gathright one.

"The Tigers tried to acquire Devil Rays closer Danys Baez before signing free-agent closer Todd Jones to a two-year, $11 million contract. The Rays asked for two top prospects ? right-hander Joel Zumaya and center fielder Curtis Granderson ? and a third minor leaguer. The Tigers would have been more comfortable trading players like center fielder Nook Logan and Double-A right-hander Humberto Sanchez. ...

I don't get it...Why did you have two different responses to the same quote?

no comment..... :banghead

Stop this love affair with Petit. We have a bunch of other guys just like him with as much talent: Johnson, Nolasco, Vargas, Pinto (if his control improves), West, Hernandez, etc....

And then we have guys better than him: Sanchez, Olsen, Willis, Volstad, etc...

He is expendable. THe only point I"m making is that if the Fish were going to do Olsen for Gathright, I would certainly add in Petit to get Gomes. No doubt in my mind. But please understand, as Lefty has stressed COUNTLESS times, that I don't want to do Olsen for Gathright.

I'm merely saying what would improve the deal should something like that be true.

Who(here in SoFla) cares how any potential outfield works out....if everything works out even better than expected....if in 3 or 4 years they're the Portland Sea Otters, or the Las Vegas D Cups then what's the difference? Gaithright could become the next Willie Mays, but what good does that do the SoFla fan if he's munching burritos in San Antonio, or Bar-b-que in NC.

The key(for SoFla Fans), is the team staying in town. With the cloud of relocation hanging over the team, who cares. Remove this cloud, and I'll care and I'll be there as often as I was in 1998. That was a great year. I won 2 bags of charcoal when they had that "promotion" of turning in a foul ball for a free bag of charcoal. The Marlins need to make a stadium deal in SoFla.....ASAP to keep what fan base they have in SoFla.

His scouting report is basically this: projects as a DH, bad defense OF, long swing, leads to alot of K's, big time power

Again I rather not deal with the Rays

Olsen and Gaby for Gomes and Gathright?

think that is a little better then giving up Pettit too. I think Gaby has a lower ceiling and not as far along as pettit.

I agree Gaby has a bit lower ceiling, but he could very well turn out better. He's younger and who knows. But honestly, if it took Petit to get the deal done--git r done.

I dont see the Marlins trading what arguably was the centerpiece in the Delgado trade

11. JONNY GOMES, of, Durham Bulls (Devil Rays)

Age: 24 Ht: 6-1 Wt: 200 B-T: R-R Drafted/Signed: Devil Rays '01 (18)

The biggest reason for Gomes' surge this year was simple: improved recognition on breaking pitches. The Devil Rays sent Gomes to the Mexican Pacific League last offseason so he could get a better handle on breaking stuff, and he responded by winning BA's Winter Player of the Year award.

Gomes continued to hit back in the United States, tearing up the International League for two months and proving he belonged in the majors when Tampa Bay finally gave him a chance. He always has possessed the bat speed and power to knock the ball out of any park, though his swing can get long at times. He doesn't offer much in the way of speed or arm strength, and he's rough defensively as a corner outfielder.

Ah I hate when players are valued based on who they were dealt for. It's all about pride when you incorporate such tactics. And the centerpiece for the Delgado trade wasn't Petit--it was Jacobs.
