It mentioned some names in which the Marlins have shown no interest. So, I'm wondering who's out there and who do you all think he is expecting us to sign.

Last I checked it takes two sides to agree to a deal -- Conine didn't want to return to the Marlins -- how can you blame them for not re-signing someone who didn't want to return?

I blame the Marlins for not resigning Conine mainly because they didn't offer him a contract when he wanted to stay with the team and play near home.

In regards to Conine, it was his decision to leave. He didn't want to be a part of a rebuilding team in his last year or two of his career. Can't say I blame him.

 

The one name I can think of not on that list that they may take a chance on is Bobby Higginson. He could come very cheap...

Conine doesn't figure to join them. He has lived in South Florida for 11 years, he noted, "but you always want to be competitive." He will be looking to play somewhere else in 2006. And at the age of 39, he probably won't be around for World Series championship III for the Marlins, whenever and wherever that may be.

 

of those, i'd like to sign hidalgo. I think he has the potential to be the best out of the group. All the others are washed up and you know what they are going to give you. Hidalgo will give you 20-30 HR's if you give him 500 AB's and could be a great hitter. You just don't know.

Girardi's comment is a month old, and first appeared in the same column as it appeared today, made two weeks before both Helms and and more importantly Olivo were brought aboard.

 

We'll find out in something like a month and a half if there's a new left fielder but I suspect Helms and Olivo may have altered the potential lineup enough that the FO can spend their time seeking to better the team in other areas.

 

There's probably a better than 50/50 chance that this comment today was nothing more than another example of the ineptitude at one of the laziest sports departments in big city newspaper publishing.

How about we stop hammering sammy, and offer him a minor league deal with a decent amount if he makes the bigs, let him grind it in triple-A for a month or so, and see if he has what it takes for a return, same thing with everybody we bring in (old vets that were good), let's try it, we really have nothing to lose, and they'll all see it as an opportunity.

No, they offered him a contract, it was just (likely) a low-ball offer.

 

He walked away as much as the Marlins let him go. Had he known what the O's would do with their off-season and that he'd be facing P.T. challenges, I'm not so sure he'd leave Florida, but hindsight is 20/20.

It was a one-year, 1 million dollar offer.......and it was definately a low-ball offer. Heck, they gave Moehler a million and a half.......and Conine would be much more valuable to this team than him.

 

No way on Sosa! Sosa with no roids is simply not a very good player anymore.

Cabrera, Hermida, Willingham, Jacobs will all likely have 20+ HR (Willy perhaps 15, who knows). Point is, we have enough power potential. We need some contact hitting to even out the group.

Sammy Sosa would retire before he'd play in AAA.

I still don't get why Conine left. If you think about it, the Marlins will probably have more of a shot at making the playoffs than the Orioles will next season.
