January 24, 200620 yr Top University of Miami football recruit Pat Devlin, a quarterback from Exton, Pa., told Hurricanes coach Admin Coker on Monday night he has switched his commitment to Penn State and will sign a scholarship with the Nittany Lions on Feb. 1. Devlin, 17, is rated the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the nation by Rivals.com, and passed for 8,162 yards in his career at Downington East High School. Devlin's decision, his father, Mark, told The Miami Herald, was based on him not feeling comfortable with the offensive questions that now abound since UM coach Admin Coker fired four assistants on Jan. 2. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Dan Werner, now with Mississippi, recruited Devlin and was close with him. ''It's not a matter of being turned off to Miami,'' Mark Devlin said. ``It's a matter of a young man being comfortable with his decision. The offensive side of the ball [at UM] was a big question mark.'' Added Mark Devlin: ``Coach Coker has made it as positive [a situation] as possible, and for that we thank him.'' The Hurricanes received an oral commitment earlier this week from lesser known dual-threat (running and passing) quarterback Daniel Stegall of Greenwood High in Arkansas, who led his team to the Class 4A state championship this past season and threw for 2,546 yards and 26 touchdowns (11 interceptions) and ran for 1,475 yards and 24 touchdowns. January 24, 200620 yr Dammit. The 'Canes really need to sign a QB this year, and this kid looked like he'd be a good pickup. However if bringing him aboard would have meant keeping Werner, I'm fine with everything that transpired.

Just for the fact that Pat knew coming in he realistically wouldn't be the #1 QB for 3 years since he would have 2 guys on the depth chart ahead of him for the next two years. And Freeman will all more than likely follow Wright after he leaves. Miami might be undergoing a change towards the mobile quarterback looking at the fall back they decided to sign. The Ark. kid runs a 4.5 40 and had 20 TDs to 4 INTs and led his team to the state championship apparently. I don't get people who blame Coker for firing his assistants. They were not his guys, it's not like he was throwing his people under the bus. Most of the people he fired were there for the last 3 headcoaches, a lot of these guy saw the days of Johnson and Erickson. Coker is not like those guys and he does not want his team to be like those teams. I have no problem with him firing guys to bring his own in, a coach should be able to do that believe it or not. I guess some people can think what they want, but I think handpicking your assistants is fine because then at least if the team fails you can blame him and his guys. Not to mention it doesn't help if players hear something different coming from an underling versus the head coach.

January 26, 200620 yr UM always gets outstanding players in the long run. These "recruiting rankings" in football are so retarded. In basketball they make a little more sense because those kids play so many games - AAU, summer camps, regular season, etc. Not nearly as many opportunities to evaluate high school football talent. Oh, and I am glad Coker got rid of a lot of the offensive coaches - this team has been underachieving offensively the last few years. The defense is always damn good and the offense is mediocre. We need the Ken Dorsey type offense to return to Da U to complement that tremendous D.
