Rick Helling...

I have always liked this guy - when he was with us the first time, I thought he would be a power pitcher type. If we put him in the bullpen (like we have) and have him around for a spot start, he could be very, very valuable. I think he will be a flamethrower out of the pen and will help us strengthen our bullpen. I am excited about this acquisition - and it has recieved very little attention.

If he impresses in ST next year, he could be the 5th starter next season. I've always liked the guy, obviously back to the 20 win season.

Has he even pitched with us, because I haven't even seen him in a game?

Yea i love Helling but a flamethrower? He throw 85....

Urbina and loop are hogging all the bullpen action since our starters have been going 7 inings. Then comes Uggy and Loop!

Helling is probably a sign that Spoon is worse off than originally thought. He could provide another stable, experienced arm to come out of the pen. I think we need to start curtailing the work load of UU, Loop and some of our starters (Willis, Redman - Penny and Beckett can keep going I think). Helling gives us another option for our pen and even long relief if necessary (which I hope not).

*hopes the rotation is the same as this year*

except Pavs in the pen when AJ is back

Helling was very inconsistent with the O's, from day to day, his control would be different. I would use him only as a spot starter, or maybe long relief. He certainly shouldn't be getting too many appearances, although if the bullpen is tired, he certainly could give a couple good innings, but then again he could go give up 4 runs in his first inning. It may not be a total crapshoot with him, but it's getting there. He's probably better than some of the alternatives though.

I like pavz in the bullpen or starting. It doesnt matter but i would hate to see him go to the pen but if its our ace coming back he would have to. He isnt going to get much work anyways...

You haven't seen him pitch yet?

So far as a Marlins he has pitched 4 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits with 4 SO and 2 BB.

So far as a Marlins he has pitched 4 scoreless innings allowing 4 hits with 4 SO and 2 BB. I haven't gotten to see many games lately. School, football...

I like Pavz in the pen. He always throws strikes early and often, which is a great thing if you're a reliever.

He isnt going to be the 5th starter. Pavz will, he wont take his spot. The FO wants him as a relief pitcher.

I'm talking next season, if we lose a starter or two.

Oh ok, i hope we dont lost any starter anyways. Loria would love to keep the starting rotation like how it is now but penny is wanted by alot of clubs!

Penny is going nowhere. If any of our starters are leaving, it's Burnett, who I think will be here. We won't as powerful of a line-up next year (but it'll be close), so they're going to hope a better rotation and bullpen next year can make up for it.

Nah Burnett wont leave. Thats for sure but i remeber the Reds Wanting Penny. Burnett will probally sign a long term deal or something but he wont leave. I am 90 Percent sure.

I hope we do keep our rotation together, but I would be kind of shocked. I think either Penny or Burnett is gone, and I seriously doubt it will be Burnett. We may sign and trade Penny, to get something for him in return, but it kind of depends on if Burnett will be ready next season - and I dont want to see him pitch until about this time next year. We dont have the talent ready at AAA to come in and take a starter's spot. In a few years, we will be pleasantly logjammed...Helling seems to be an immediate fix.

Burnett should be completely ready by June-July of next year.

He was only acquired as insurance and to make spot starts. Hes nothing to get your panties in a bunch about as hes been less then average the past few years.

I happen agree with Sham here on Helling, he was a "nice" pickup but nothing great, a guy who pitches more from experience than from arm strength these days. Were it me, I would consider sitting Dontrelle down for two or three starts and give the kid (and his arm) a breather for a couple of weeks, he's so obviously exhausted. Use Phelps and Hellings as a tandem (3-4 innings each). But then again its 4:07am as I write this and I not be in my right mind. lololol

Anyone else think Penny should be traded for an inexpensive bat? Anyone? Pavano is just too cool to put in the pen.

Oh wait, you'd rather traded great prospects for $4,000,000 has-beens.

Just don't let JP Ricciardi, Theo Epstein, or Billy Beane get to the Marlins, they'd rape them.

Let's see... they'd probably take undervalued Brian Banks, Ramon Castro, and Derrek Lee from you all, as well as the rest of your minor league system.

In return? You get Terrance Long, Ramon Hernandez, and Mike Bordick.

Cheers.

Amazing how many pitchers who did not do well for us, years later are emerging. Maybe this is Helling's turn. Pitchers are weird. Helling is now a Pro. I'm rooting for him. (When everyone was celebrating Almanza being sent down, I said I was looking forward to seeing him in SP in Jupiter. I also said, a month ago, that Spooney would not be back in time.) It's fun to forcast position players success. It's a bummer to try to forcast the future of young pitchers.

huh? Helling has never emerged and has always been a 5th starter at best. He is somewhat useful to us as a spot starter/middle reliever and might replace Bump when Spooney returns.

Shamrock, I didn't say Helling had "emerged." I said "maybe it's his turn." Please read before you react.

well, regardless he was only brought in as insurance and possibly to give the exhausted Willis a break. Nothing more.
