February 7, 200620 yr FCAT Writing was administered today to students in 4th, 8th, and 10th grade. There were many changes this year reguarding the 10th grade Writing+ Test. There is now a multiple choice grammer test included with the writing essay, and the passing grade is now 4.0 instead of 3.0. Students must pass the 10th grade FCAT to graduate high school.
February 7, 200620 yr Wow. I got a 3.5 when I took it a few years back...And I consider myself a very good writer. Anyone can have a hard time writing about a topic they don't really like. I really don't like the system they use, but whatever. 4.0 is too high.
February 7, 200620 yr They're adding a multiple choice section, hence the upkick in score. Besides, why should the state place lower standards on its students?
February 7, 200620 yr They're adding a multiple choice section, hence the upkick in score. Besides, why should the state place lower standards on its students? Oh, the multpile choice section is part of the essay section now? Ah, then ya that does make sense. And I don't think the state should place lower standards on its students. But I have to tell you, I really did get a 3.5 (and many other friends had somewhat low scores) that did not reflect my writing skills at the time. I had one lousy afternoon. I think the only way to gauge the skills/ability of a student is to test/evaluate them over a period of time. Give them several assessments and then take the average of such tests/evaluations.
February 7, 200620 yr Author Today there was a 54 multiple choice test on grammer. My brother said his prompt was to persuade a state legislator to change the voting age from 18 to 16.
February 7, 200620 yr ...they forced us Seniors to come to school. Today was the only day to buy Grad Nite tickets. So naturally, I payed it and then I left.
February 7, 200620 yr ...they forced us Seniors to come to school. Today was the only day to buy Grad Nite tickets. So naturally, I payed it and then I left. How ironic. They 'forced' you to come to school on FCAT writing day, and you 'paid' for your tickets and left.
February 7, 200620 yr Author Always on the FCAT and Benchmark days, after testing 1/2 of the school leaves. They should be made 1/2 days.
February 7, 200620 yr We're doing it here but unfortunately I teach 7th graders so they are not testing, we've been watching movies all day while the 8th graders are taking the exam.
February 7, 200620 yr If I recall correctly, they had a MC part on it last year as well. Anyway, I got a 5.5.
February 7, 200620 yr They actually added the multiple choice portion last year. I received a 5.5 last year when I took it, and that disappointed me... I thought I naliled it completely. Pretty basic if you ask me. If you can't pass the F-CAT, then you shouldn't be graduating. If you don't know that material, you are not ready for college. If you don't know that material, you shouldn't even be in 10th grade IMO.
February 7, 200620 yr Haha, newbs have to take the writing. I went to school because seniors had a normal school day, no more 4 hour 1st hour classes. I got a 6 two years ago.
February 7, 200620 yr They really must have softened the grading rubric in the past 5 years, because you guys are getting better scores (5+) than some of the smartest kids I went to school with.

Maybe, but I would have gotten a 6 regardless of who was grading it because I am awesome....and arrogant, but awesome nonetheless. Got a 6 in 8th grade too. Do I get a cookie now?

Ya, just for your sig! Arrogant little sh*t :lol I don't want to toot my own horn, but I am a very good writer...And I only got a 3.5---I guess I was trying to be sincere, while some people just BS it with stuff they think the graders want to read.
February 7, 200620 yr I went in at 12 after breakfast and hanging out at the park. Thank goodness I'm a senior. :] I suck at writing, so I got a 4 on it...but I had perfect scores on the two other sections. (math & reading?) The FCAT is a joke and like Wild Card said...if you cant pass it, you should not be in 10th grade.

Just because you can't write at that level by 10th grade doesn't mean you shouldn't be there.

I know they always have extra time and stuff like that. But yeah, I guess they're a special case. BTW- I meant the reading and math sections were a joke. And also, doesnt the writing score only affect the school grade and not if you pass high school? That's how it was when we took it.
