September 7, 200322 yr from ESPN.com Marlins 2B Luis Castillo, who can become a free agent after the season, wants a multiyear deal. "This is my sixth year here on a year-to-year contract," he said. "Now I'm looking for a two or three-year contract. I don't want to go on like this." Castillo said he has not been approached by Marlins management to talk about his status. ... he wants a multi-year deal? well join the club Luis! and now you've got Pudge talking about wanting to stay here & how much he likes it here too... I would rather these guys just not get into it until after the season. It's public knowledge that the Marlins FO doesn't discuss deals until after the season's over, what is Castillo expecting?
September 7, 200322 yr Castillo has always maintained he has wanted a multiyear deal. This is nothing new.
September 7, 200322 yr I wouldnt mind sighning him longer. There are alot of teams that wanted Castillo, i guess he doesnt wana go and you cant blame him. He has hit over .300 with us for 3 years in a row and i love how he plays. Luis and Pierre make a good combo and thats part of the reason we have been winning.
September 7, 200322 yr Sign Castillo to a 1 year deal , and Lee to 4-5 years and if Castillo doesnt like it the door is always open :: Waves::
September 7, 200322 yr What Lee to a 4 Year Deal? No way, i cant stand him not being a good clutch hitter. We got conine to replace Lee at the end of the season. Castillo is much more valuable than lee.
September 7, 200322 yr Jeff Conine just got a multi-year deal and it took him all of 10 minutes in as a Marlin to get one. Luis' been here for six years, and he gets jack s***. I don't think he is out of line at all by asking for a multi-year deal.
September 8, 200322 yr Trade Conine He is 37 And keep DLee! And Luis And Pudge And Lowell! Lee = $8 Mill Conine = $4 Mill I'll take Conine. Lee will never succeed in Pro Player. Let him leave for his sake, so he can put up the numbers we know he's capable of (away from the Pro). If we CAN keep Castillo, I'm all for it, but I see him in a Met uniform next year. As much as I love the guy, I want Castro starting. I'm way too excited to see how he will succeed. Lowell is a given.

September 8, 200322 yr Conine already had a multi year deal We added to it, made it through '05 instead of '04. Castillo didn't get an extension, Conine did.
September 8, 200322 yr We need to get rid of Lee. The money he'll be asking soon will be far greater than he's worth. He hasn't played well enough to warrant a salary hike. I don't mind losing Castillo either, if we can find a suitable replacement.
September 8, 200322 yr We need to get rid of Lee. The money he'll be asking soon will be far greater than he's worth. He hasn't played well enough to warrant a salary hike. Any team in baseball will get their monies worth from Derrek, just not us, because of Pro Player. I don't mind losing Castillo either, if we can find a suitable replacement. Can you really replace Luis? Do we have any options, other than keeping him, that would give us the production he does? I think not.
September 8, 200322 yr Can you really replace Luis? Do we have any options, other than keeping him, that would give us the production he does? I think not. Mark Loretta will be a free agent this offseason. I have no idea if the Fish are interested in him or if he would play for the Fish, but he's putting up very solid numbers for the Padres this season. My guess is he would come a lot cheaper than Castillo. We'll see what happens this offseason...

September 8, 200322 yr Well, you learn somethin new everyday... I do agree with you, the market for 2B this offseason will be really thin. I think the best course of action would be to let Pudge leave and use the money you save to resign Lowell and Castillo to long-term deals. Or if Pudge just can't get enough of the Marlins, then perhaps trade Castro to a team that can offer a second basemen.
September 8, 200322 yr I thought Adam Kennedy is going to be available. I don't know if that's true. I believe so. And so is Mark G. (of the Cubs, not D-Backs :lol ). I think the best course of action would be to let Pudge leave and use the money you save to resign Lowell and Castillo to long-term deals. With the $1 Million that will be freed up? Or if Pudge just can't get enough of the Marlins, then perhaps trade Castro to a team that can offer a second basemen. I know some do and don't agree with me, but I think Castro is going to provide just as good, possibly better offense than Pudge has this year, and at a HUGE discount. I know it's hard to believe, but Castro has the talent, and there is NO denying it.
September 8, 200322 yr With the $1 Million that will be freed up? I said we should use the money we save to resign Lowell and Castillo. Now that Pudge has proven to everybody that he's healthy and productive, my guess is he'll command, at the very least, $8 million on the open market (the O's offered 6 mil last offseason coming off his worst year). Hence, we would be saving about $8 million (or however much Pudge demands this offseason) by not attempting to resign him. I am fully aware that not much money is actually freed up by letting Pudge go, but we would still save a lot by not dishing out 7 mil or 8 mil or whatever he demands this offseason. Anyway, from your other comment, it seems you agree with me that letting Pudge go is our best option, so I'm not sure why you chose to argue this point.

September 8, 200322 yr Ahhh, yes. Castillo provides the the first inkling of the train wreck that will be the Marlins' off-season. And I don't blame him one bit. A perfect example of being penny-wise and dollar foolish. Could of diffused this whole situation by actually signing these guys at cheaper rates for longer terms 6 months ago.

I don't think he is out of line at all by asking for a multi-year deal. nor do i. just that announcing it now doesn't make any sense. he'll make his demands to the FO after the season, what's the point in brining it up right now?? i think they can resign him actually. don't know if they WILL, but if they let Pudge & Derek go there's no reason why they can't.
September 8, 200322 yr We added to it, made it through '05 instead of '04. Castillo didn't get an extension, Conine did. hey needle d***, Beinfest made that extension to get more for the money. Why pay Conine 5 mill next season when you can pay him 6 mill for 2 seasons. DUHHHH
