March 28, 200620 yr Willingham looks like he can catch. Not talking Gold Glove, but he appears competent and we know he can hit. Center field is a disaster. Uggla has a nose-to-toes strike zone, but will punish a pitcher for a mistake. I am a little higher on him than I was. 1-6 should not be any worse than last year. 7-8 might be utter crap, a black hole where runs go to die.
March 28, 200620 yr 7-8 might be utter crap, a black hole where runs go to die. And this differs from last year how? I still think the Marlins are going to surprise people.
March 28, 200620 yr but Reggie would be hitting 7th right now... and Im not saying he will continue this torrid hitting, in a few weeks, but I dont know how you can say that "7-8 might be utter crap, a black hole where runs go to die." Im also in the slim minority that thinks Chris Aguila can put up solid numbers if given the at bats
March 28, 200620 yr 7-8 might be utter crap, a black hole where runs go to die. That sounds exactly like Gonzalez, Lowell, and for stretches Encarnacion. Offense will be fine, I'm much more interested in how the bullpen does when the games are actually on the line. Im also in the slim minority that thinks Chris Aguila can put up solid numbers if given the at bats Depends on what you define as "solid numbers."

Dude has some serious pop.... Most of you dont believe me but he puts on absolute shows in BP(and holds a HS homerun record in Nevada) oh well... Im gonna throw the crow in the oven now :shifty

Im gonna throw the crow in the oven now :shifty I've heard all about the "fast hands" he has and I know he set a prep school HR record when he was drafted (48 for a career or something like that) but I just don't have as warm and fuzzy a feeling about him as I do a bunch of other players. And, yeah, I've seen him in BP, he goes crazy, but it was like that in 2004 and 2005 too and he didn't do anything then, even when he got that week's worth of starts.
March 28, 200620 yr I believe he has very good stats when starting. He has just been absolutly dreadful at pinch-hitting.
March 28, 200620 yr he actually did pretty well when he got a week's worth of starts in 2004. he's gotten inconsistent ab's in the big leagues. i think he'll do very well if he can be a starter. his career line is something like .235/.270/.370 in limited, inconsistent action. if he gets regular playing time i think he can put up .270/.320/.425.
March 28, 200620 yr Aguila needs to work hard to improve hitting breaking balls. If he doesn't improve much this season AND he ends up starting I don't expect him to hit much better than .250.
March 28, 200620 yr Author If Aguila was the #8 hitter and we had a real option for the other OF slot, then I wouldn't be so down on the bottom of the order. But the Reed/Abecrombie package is not even good enough for AAA.

But the Reed/Abecrombie package is not even good enough for AAA. I see Abercrombie hitting around .260 and striking out about 150 times but I also see him running into 20-25 balls that arent comming back.

March 28, 200620 yr I don't see any reason why Reggie can't have a season very similar to Wilson's first full year in the majors. 156 K's, 26 bombs, 20 doubles, and 40 walks.

How about never doing that even in A ball? There is no reason to think this guy has any tools. BTW, did anyone get to see a game where Stokes was in LF? Was he just totally inept?

Yeah, butt OMGAbercrombie!
March 28, 200620 yr i don't get why people are so down on abercrombie. sure we're taking a risk with him, but everyone in the organization is impressed with his tools. this is a rebuilding year... let's give the man a few months to prove to us that he's progressed immensely. i should remind you all that it's not uncommon for a player to 'click' all of a sudden. not to say that he's like any of these players, but miguel cabrera essentially made the jump from high a to the big leagues (only spent two months in double a). i am sure he would have done well in 2003 had he started the season up here. pujols came out of nowhere. it's not unprecedented. the thing about reggie is he's got great tools... he's improved quite a bit from last year. let's just try him out. let's not be down about any of our players. i don't get this hatrded toward the guy. let the kid ball.
March 28, 200620 yr Aguila the past 2 years, omitting his pinch-hit at-bats. .287 / .316 / .457 I'd probably take that from my 7 or 8 hitter this year.

Who says they hate Abercrombie? We arn't Spike over here. People are projecting great things for a guy who couldn't produce at A-ball at the age of 25. Now he's had an amazing spring and people are flippin. I personally like the guy and hope he really makes it, but guys with complete lack of plate discipline usually don't. Give him the opportunity, yes, he's certainly earned it, but I think we've got another OMGNunez on our hands here. The comparison to Cabrera and Pujols are ludicrous. Both were FAR younger for their levels and were tearing the cover off the ball. Aguila the past 2 years, omitting his pinch-hit at-bats. .287 / .316 / .457 I think he'll make a fine reserve OFer and maybe an average player in CF. I'd rather not have him as a long-term option at LF though.
March 28, 200620 yr i explicitly said that i wasn't making a comparison between reggie on the one hand and miguel and pujols on the other. i was just using them as an example of players that just 'click' all of a sudden. they have the tools and then all of a sudden put it together. that's all i was saying. don't say i was trying to compare them. miguel didn't tear the cover off the ball until he got to double a. his line in high a the season before he got to the big leagues was .274 .333 .421. he tore up double a for two months and then got called up. he hadn't put together a whole season where he was absolutely tearing up minor league season when he got called up. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/m...l-cabrera.shtml and pujols didn't, either. he put up this line in high a ball in 2000: .284/.341/.481... in only 21 games. went up to aaa for 3 games and didn't do well at all. ops of about .550. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/P/albert-pujols.shtml then he made the jump to the big leagues. there are also questions about albert's true age. both these cats came out of nowhere. now you can say they were much younger and therefore were more likely to just click all of a sudden. and i agree with that. no one is projecting abercrombie to come up and be the next miggy cabrera or fat albert pujols. but, players with "tools" and "raw talent" often do make huge strides in a small period of time. that's just how it works. abercrombie's issue has been strike zone recognition. if he made enough progress in that to become below average for a major leaguer (which is to say, average for someone in aa or even aaa) he can really surprise us and put up something like .270/.300/.550. one last thing... i trust whatever the front office does. it doesn't matter what you or i think of him. they see him day in and day out. if he starts the season as our centerfielder then obviously they see potential there. he might just suck, but i will give him the benefit of the doubt.
March 28, 200620 yr Man Shamrock, how many threads that I am not participating in are you going to just throw out random things I've said? I've never had anything bad to say about Abercrombie.
March 28, 200620 yr 7-8 might be utter crap, a black hole where runs go to die. And this differs from last year how? I still think the Marlins are going to surprise people. positive thoughts are what its all about and u got that. the marlins will turn some heads and the lineup isnt even that bad, yes it may take a bit for them to get accustomed but they are bound to click sooner then later. if aber makes the CF job he will do just fine once he gets accustomed to learning the strike zone more and if we can see more of aguila on a daily basis we will see what he is made of. we already know that he can hit on a minor league level same goes for all the marlins. hermida and jacobs will sandwich cabrera with willi to follow and maybe uggla after him? that right there looks like a solid enough lineup to me. personally i know the offense may slack a bit for awhile but the bullpen is what worses me the most because i know that wasnt even decent last year down the stretch and that was something that needed to be addressed in the offseason and hopefully its fulfilled by the start of the season. as for aber and aguila order in the lineup 7 - 8 number wise .260 + 15 - 22 HR 68 RBI + for each of them considering they get at least 135 games under them
