April 4, 200620 yr Willis certainly deserves kudos for keeping the Astros scoreless for 5 innings. The bullpen of Johnson, Borowski and Martinez looked strong as well. Hopefully now they've got the butterflies out of their system and they'll come back strong tomorrow night. :thumbup
April 4, 200620 yr Offense struggled but what do you expect against Oswalt.... Its all good, lets go get them tomorrow boys!
April 4, 200620 yr Patience at the plate how about patience at the right time. how many times did these guys strike out looking? on fastballs? biggest positive: carlos martinez
April 4, 200620 yr Martinez looked pretty good out of the pen. Josh Johnson's got good stuff too, just needs to keep in mind that out of the pen he's got to throw more strikes.
April 4, 200620 yr Nice thread :thumbup Dontrelle, JJ, Martinez and Bo looked pretty good. I also liked Hermida's patience at the plate.
April 4, 200620 yr I'll take my chances in any game where we out hit the opposition and hold them to 1 run over 9 innings.
April 4, 200620 yr Author Jacobs showed his very sweet swing. He looked totally confident against Lidge in the pressure packed 9th.
April 4, 200620 yr Patience at the plate how about patience at the right time. how many times did these guys strike out looking? on fastballs? biggest positive: carlos martinez I still feel most of them had good ABs. It should pay off later on
April 4, 200620 yr The positive thing would have been to have won but heck they only lost 1-0!! Not bad for a bunch of rookies!! LOL
April 4, 200620 yr Author I still feel most of them had good ABs. It should pay off later on Agreed. I was hoping they would come out of the starting gate hot. But still realize they have quite a bit of learning to do.
April 4, 200620 yr I saw no negatives for opening day. Hanley was shaky in the field but he will be fine. Johnson seemed to not trust his stuff to just got after batters...that will change. We lost to Oswalt 1-0. With last years team we may have lost 1-0. Tomorrow will be tough to as Pettite is nasty. The team will become more relaxed and we will get it together. Not bad guys....a loss yes...but 1-0 to the NL defending champs and half our team probably realized the game started about the 5th inning because of nerves.
April 4, 200620 yr I'd rather lose 1-0 than 11-0. Postive And for the strike outs (ones looking) at least they didn't swing and miss.
April 4, 200620 yr I'll take a 1-0 loss on the road to the defending NL Champs. But this team is not here to lose, and it pisses me off that our own announcers are treating our team like the United Way child of the Majors. On the bright side, Johnson and especially Martinez shined out of the pen, I think one of the two has the closer job locked down by May 15th.....The Astros offense was held in check except for a bad pitch by Borowski.....Trelle had a rather meh performance, but he hung in through the miscues and the lack of control to make it through 5 IP without a run and with just one hit.....good to see aggressiveness at the right times by Girardi even if it didn't always work.....the defense outside of the MIF was stellar..... On the down side, Shadez had a serious case of the nerves while Uggla really is as bad as they say at 2B.....Outside of The Messiah no one was really working the count to their normal abilities, which I'd attribute mostly to shellshock coming out of the gate on the road against such a tough pitcher in Oswalt.....They did show some good things against Lidge having so much patience, even though they couldn't pull it out.....Thor might be the slowest man alive :lol .....The smack leading up to the game and the garbage talking by our own announcers was pitiful..... Overall a lot of today is attributed to jitters, which should fade away eventually. I agree with Olney's outlook that he'd be surprised if this team drops 90 or more.
April 4, 200620 yr It definetly looked like the opening day jitters out there. The team looked good. Not great. But good.
April 4, 200620 yr I'd rather lose 1-0 than 11-0. Postive eh Uggla really is as bad as they say at 2B..... maybe I missed it... what did or didnt Uggla do?
April 4, 200620 yr On the down side, Shadez had a serious case of the nerves while Uggla really is as bad as they say at 2B..... I didn't see Uggla do anything wrong at 2B at all. He almost turned a DP, & the little flip to Hanley should've turned another one.
April 4, 200620 yr The team looked great. Like someone said.. obvious first day jitters which will fade I think. I'm pleased with the game today.. of course a loss always sux, but it could have been a lot worse. Lidge looked pretty nervous didn't he? LOL Our bullpen did well I think. What did you guys think of the bullpen?
April 4, 200620 yr Martinez was nasty. I didnt like the fact that it seemed at times we were taking too many fastballs and especially with two strikes. I believe all our strike outs were looking except for two (dont mark my words though) Overall it was a positive game. The better pitchers we face the better we will become and if we just tweak a few things this game couldve shifted in our direction and thats saying something against the reigning NL Champs with Oswalt on the mound like some are stating. And of course the more games we play the better are going to get no doubt about it. I just hope that the MIF play tonight was more due to jitters than actual ability because they did not look well tonight at all.
April 4, 200620 yr On the down side, Shadez had a serious case of the nerves while Uggla really is as bad as they say at 2B..... I didn't see Uggla do anything wrong at 2B at all. He almost turned a DP, & the little flip to Hanley should've turned another one.He didn't mess up boxscore wise.....just observations from having played the position. His footing was all wrong on DPs (he was 'tapdancing' as my friend put it), jittering around trying to find the bag instead of knowing where it was, he didn't know to keep his foot on the bag on the Hanley play, and his throwing arm is blah on DPs. Perry still has a lot of work to do.
April 4, 200620 yr I'll take my chances in any game where we out hit the opposition and hold them to 1 run over 9 innings. Agreed... although it was actually 8 innings.

April 4, 200620 yr I hope you're right, time will tell. I just saw what seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
