Fan tosses syringe near Bonds

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A fan tossed a syringe near Barry Bonds as he came off the field in between innings on Monday at Petco Park, and the San Francisco Giants slugger said he picked it up in his glove and carried it off the field.

 

The syringe apparently did not have a needle.

 

"I just put it off the field so no one would get hurt," said Bonds, who is under investigation by baseball for alleged steroid use.

 

The syringe toss occurred after the bottom of the eighth inning of the San Diego Padres' 6-1 win over the Giants.

 

"If that's what they want to do, embarrass themselves, then that's on them," Bonds said. "That has nothing to do with me at all."

 

According to the book "Game of Shadows," written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters, Bonds used a vast array of performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids and human growth hormone, for at least five seasons beginning in 1998. According to the book, Bonds used several substances in various forms, including by injecting himself with a syringe and taking injections from his personal trainer.

 

Bonds, who has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, was booed often by the sellout crowd of 43,767 on Monday.

 

"I don't judge them," Bonds said. "I have to concentrate on baseball. I leave that up to you guys to make those statements in the paper."

 

Richard Andersen, the Padres executive in charge of Petco Park, didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

making fun of players and talking trash is part of sports but what this guy did is way over the line......i wish they would have caught who did it..

I would have never thought to say it, but I agree. I don't like him, nor do I want him to break the records, but the hate and castigation he has to deal with is inappropriate. This is a game. A game we all love, but a game nonetheless. Boo him if you like, but don't throw things onto the field and don't write him threatening letters.

Sympathize with a man making 20 million dollars a year? Making more than most of us make in a year in a DAY? Screw him.

I thought it was funny, and it wasn't nearly as dangerous as Philly fans throwing batteries at J.D. Drew.

I dont feel sympathy for Bonds, he dug his own hole. As far as how fans are treating him, I'm pretty sure Hank Aaron had it alot worse back when he was knocking them out, and Bonds has it no worse from the fans than Maris did.

It is sad that people actually plan these things. I dont give any sympathy for Bonds he brought the steriods scandal to himself. You know who i feel sorry for, every minor league player that cant break into the bigs beacuse some juicer is blocking his way. I thought that the joke was funny and didnt endarger anyone, Whats a matter Barroid get his feelings hurt.

You know, I started to read this thread and actually thought my fellow board members had a conscience. For the most part, I was very impressed by the first few comments here.. Then, as I was waiting for, it took a turn for the worst.

 

I don't care if you're throwing batteries, syringes, or feathers at the players.. I don't think it's appropriate to throw anything onto the field. These guys aren't there as animals just to make us laugh. They are athletes trying to concentrate on the field... I hope they threw his arse out...

I can see all people saying he's a DICK to the media and that why people treat him horrible... But how did he bring this on himself about the whole roids' issue?? THE GUY HAS YET TO FAIL A DRUG TEST!!! Yea all us probably know that he took steriods but until he FAILS a test.. He deserves to make that money, he deserves that HR record.. FAIL a drug test then you whipe it away but until he does, whether he is a dick to the media or not he doesnt deserve a syringe thrown at him!

I never once said he did not take steriods. I personally do think he took some short of human growth substance...You make a valid point and yes thay may have "leaked" out but I think talk is cheap..... I would like to see the open books, with the paper thats stamped across saying FAILED! I dont know, just like to see the hard core facts.. But hey thats just me... Some folks as you see let a book make their decison.

 

All in all, YOU MADE YOUR POINT which was a GREAT one...... STAY OFF THE FIELD!

As for my opinion. I don't like Bonds as a person. I respect him a lot as a player, pre-steroids. Steroids don't help with a batting eye. None of those hitting records should be disavowed. But the increase in power at his age isn't supposed to happen. But he still is a HOFer regardless. And actually, I think its kind of funny they threw an empty plastic syringe, without the needle, onto the field of play. It still crossed a line however, and it is not right.
