April 17, 200620 yr What a douchebag! If you want to root for the Yankees or Mets, fine. If you're demanding Loria sell the team, all the better. But don't wish for the assimilation of all of our talent onto your traveling All-Star team that will never coalesce into a world championship team.
April 17, 200620 yr the other day they were defending the Marlins, saying if they could go through five years of losing and win a World Series every six years, they'd do it... and they gave the Marlins credit for winning two titles in the past decade, while other teams constantly come up short.
April 17, 200620 yr Author Well, now he's saying it's a travesty that the Marlins can't spend $60 million (the payroll floor for his not contracting a team) rather than the Yankees spending $210 million on underachievers.
April 17, 200620 yr One might think he's been coached by Donald Fehr, chief steroid-enabler, er head of the players union. At a minimum $60 million there'd be quite a few teams in line for contraction, especially if you consider their spending patterns over the last five years.
April 17, 200620 yr Well, he does kind of have a point. By the Marlins having a $15 Million payroll, it gives the Yanks and BoSox reason to decry revenue sharing and say "why do it at all, if the Marlins aren't going to even spend the money on payroll to make their club competitive." I tend to agree with him on that. I mean, don't get me wrong here - in no way shape or form do I even want to hear the words "contraction" and "Marlins" uttered in the same sentence. BUT, he does have a point about revenue sharing. Loria should be forced to spend EVERY penny he gets from revenue sharing on payroll to put a productive product on the field. Otherwise, what is the point of revenue sharing? Why have a cap on spending at all? That was Greeny's point...from what I overheard on Mike & Mike.
April 17, 200620 yr The Marlins wanted to start over again. If they had kept the payroll at about 45 or 50 million, they would be stuck in mediocrity for the foreseeable future. By starting all the way over, they're building for a future run at the World Series. Maybe they should have a rule that says you can't spend below a certain amount for three or four years in a row. If you do, you get fined. That will provide rebuilding teams with the incentive to increase their spending a few years after they start rebuilding.

Maybe you are right, but you can't argue that the current 2006 Marlins have major deficiencies in their lineup. They have a black hole in CF (and LF when Willy is catching), START (not merely use as a role player) a rule 5 pick-up at 2B, and, save for Wes Helms, have no bench. And, we haven't even begun to talk about the pitching. While the young guys have pretty much all impressed me, the same cannot be said for Herges & Co., and we have no real closer. It is kind of foolish to say that the Marlins could not have found a creative way to spend another $5-$10 Million, while still maintaining their rebuilding mode. I'm not saying that we needed to spend $60 Million on payroll. But, by spending tha absolute bare minimum, we are proving Greeny's point.
April 17, 200620 yr You guys are such fools....who gives a crap what the national media says...Greeny is a damn good radio host and if he started to say that the Dolphins are gonna win the super bowl, you'd all jump on him like he was a piece of meat....WHO CARES WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS
April 17, 200620 yr the answer is to change the system, so those teams that get revenue sharing dollars have an incentive to invest on the product. The answer is not contraction
April 17, 200620 yr His opinion really doesn't matter much to me since he thinks Chad Pennington is a god.
April 17, 200620 yr If a team doesn't just refuse to spend revenue sharing money, but essentially pisses on the system, they deserve to be in trouble. Loria is receiving $60 million in revenue sharing money, he's spending one quarter of that. That's an embarassment to baseball and the system and something needs to be done to remedy that.

April 17, 200620 yr Author Littlefield got away with that with the Pirates last season. To an extent, he's getting away with it again this season by signing overpriced veterans, just so he can do the same thing he did in 2005 in 2007, pointing to the failures of 2006.

How exactly would that stop Loria from pocketing money he received from revenue sharing, rather than actually spending it on the team?
April 17, 200620 yr someone has his shows email adress so we can all nominate his ass for the JUST SHUT UP AWARD?

April 17, 200620 yr I don't care if we're the worst team in the history of professional sports, who the f*** contracts a team that is two years removed from a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP? It doesn't matter how bad we are or what type of financial position we're in, the mere notion of contraction is absurd.
