After losing an admittedly "ugly" game on Monday at Cincinnati, manager Joe Girardi convened a short team meeting in an effort to ease his young Marlins' growing pains.

 

"We have to try to evaluate a lot of guys," said Girardi. "Some of them are pressing. Some are nervous about what happens if they don't get a hit in this at-bat. It's tough when you're young and inexperienced."

 

Girardi could find out how much impact his meeting had on Tuesday night, when the Marlins and the Reds play the second game of their three-game series.

 

One goal will be trying to cut down on mental errors, such as the one committed on Monday by Wes Helms, who unsuccessfully tried to steal second base in the fourth inning of a game in which Florida already trailed, 5-0.

 

The Marlins also will be trying to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season.

 

Pitching matchup

FLA: LHP Jason Vargas (1-1, 5.73 ERA)

In 2005, Vargas faced the Reds once, collecting a win after giving up one run in 6 1/3 innings.

 

CIN: LHP Eric Milton (2-0, 2.63 ERA)

After a dreadful 2005, the veteran is showing signs of reverting to the form that made him a coveted free agent.

 

Players to watch

Lately it's been all or nothing for Cincinnati left fielder Adam Dunn, whose last six hits all have been home runs, including a two-run blast in the first inning on Monday night.

 

Miguel Cabrera is 3-for-13 lifetime against Milton, but two of the hits were home runs.

The Reds have a thing about airing games on TV on Tuesdays. No FSN Ohio TV crew to help with FSN Florida's broadcast mean both teams on radio.
