LOS ANGELES - Pro-immigration activists say a national boycott and marches planned for May 1 will flood U.S. streets with millions of Latinos to demand amnesty for illegal immigrants and shake the ground under Congress as it debates reform. Such a massive turnout could make for the largest protests since the civil rights era of the 1960s, though not all Latinos -- nor their leaders -- were comfortable with such militancy, fearing a backlash in Middle America

I've NEVER seen a major protest like this planned. It'd be cool to see it reach fruition.

Disrupting everyone else doesnt help their cause. If they get a million people and peacefully protest, then that is cool.

yeah - piss off enough people who are currently ignoring you to get them to mobilize against you - while everyone continues to play into this distraction that has no real solution on the table

If I had a job, I wouldn't go to work that day. I will do whatever I can to participate. That day I will do either 1) nothing or 2) whatever is organized in NYC.

 

I hope all Latinos that don't show up to work are fired - that way people will learn how important these workers are to the economy. They'll get rehired the next day.

the real shame is that it would be unrealistic to just round up illegals at these protests, but one can dream...

I dont think its possible to deport 11 million people. Those who have been here for over 2-3 years I would allow to stay. However any illegal with a criminal record either in the US or their own country should be sent back

I don't work that day, but if I did I wouldn't mind supporting the cause also. Not sure what kind of protests you'll see down here though. There are a lot of illegals here, but no one is going to hate on them because all of our parents and grandparents were the same at one point or another. Miami might not get that much attention simply because nobody hates illegals among us.

You can not deport these people. They have come to America for a better opportunity for them and their family, you can not blame them for that. This country was built upon immigrants.

How can people even talk about deporting 12 million people, that is logistically impossible.

I watched American Morning this morning on CNN, and they had a guy who organized a protest a few weeks ago in Phoenix for immigrants, and he felt this would make them more distant from the average American.

The point of the fact is that the U.S. Constitution does not apply to illegal immigrants. They legally do not have the right to protest and/ or assemble. Thats why Mexicans make less then minimum wage, because they wage laws do not apply to them. I think they should have human rights because their people just like everybody else, black, white, mexican were all people.

Big difference between 'shouldn't' and reality. As per your examples, here's what the Constitution has to say:

The right of citizens of the United States"] or abridged by the United States or any state on account of age.

The bolded parts are the ones that are relevent to the topic at hand. The italic parts are what specifies the difference between fundamental rights and the rights of a citizen. Notice the word change - citizens and only citizens have the right to vote if they are 18 or older in the United States. However, in the amendments that classify fundamental rights, the word citizen is not mentioned. Why? Because it applies to everyone. This isn't my opinion, it's the law of the land as verified in the Constitution and defended by the Supreme Court. You don't have to pass a test to be able to speak or assemble.

If anybody watched Dayside on Fox News today and saw the man trying to organize this and you're still in favor of it, I feel bad for you, very very bad.

You can say whatever the hell you want to say, but if you don't feel proud enough to be a part of the country, and only want part of the American economy, then get the f*** out.

Illegal Aliens are allowed to have freedom of speech, but their assembly and use of that does make them known in turn they can be subjected to deportation by the INS as long as they could deport them for other reasons (which wouldn't be difficult).

Illegal immigrants are removable, but may have forms of relief from removal available depending on their particular situation. I know immigration law pretty well, so I will just say for now that most posts here are pretty ignorant (except Juanky's, Homer's and a few ohters).

Give them amnesty already. No one is gonna deport 11 million people. Put them on worker Visa's and if they can live a life with out commiting heinous crimes then after a few years they should be given citizenship. Any illegal children should be given citizenship immediately.
