May 1 protest aims to 'close' cities Updated

Give them amnesty already. No one is gonna deport 11 million people. Put them on worker Visa's and if they can live a life with out commiting heinous crimes then after a few years they should be given citizenship. Any illegal children should be given citizenship immediately.

I agree i think the government needs to come up with a plan to integrate the 11-12 million people already here into the society by granting them some form of protected status. That said I think that should happen only after the everyone who has gone through or is currently going through the process( which I currently am as my wife is Mexican) should be taken care of first , the borders need to be secured , then and only then should a form of amnesty be granted . That said I support everyone's right to protest but I think the May 1 protest might actually inspire a counter protest movement . I could see where Mexican flags and some of the radical elements in the protest movement could consolidate many people in middle America against the immigrant movement . If it was me , I would run commericals as if it were a campaign shwoing all the contributions many of the "illegal" people contribute to America , and show that most want to assimilate into the greater American culture .I think that would build up public support for granting "amnesty."

I'm not sure you even need to have an ad campaign. Just watch what happens if all the illegal immigrants in the company didn't show up to work for an entire week.

I am pretty convinced that this will backfire if a lot of people join in.

I think amnesty is an insult to all immigrants who have come into this country legally and have had to go through a lot to get citizenship.

If you really want to end the 1-2 million illegals per year flow into this country, you have to punish the companies that hire them. If you do this enough, then eventually the flow will slow down to a trickle.

I also do not think that it is realistic to deport 10-20 million illegal people. Right now I am more concerned about getting a comprehensive border security bill passed to fix the holes in the border. The Border Patrol's only Predator drone crashed the other day, so now we don't have any overflying of the border anymore. Luckily Congress approved a bill to increase funding to the Border Patrol.

I wouldn't mind increased border patrol so long as the people already here are given some form of residency with eventual citizenship.

This is an interesting dilmenia.

One, I'm all for Americans getting equal rights.

Two, I'm very much against people going by illegal means to make it here to this country, especially when my family went through all the legal means to make it to this great nation.

Maybe I'm just being elitest in it.

I have no problem with people here legally protesting like this.

If they are fired, then thats the risk you take.

But I also know the plight many take to make it this country, I guess I just hate it when people enter this country illegally AND make zero attempt to integrate themsevles into the generally accepted United States customs.

Protest is great, I just hope it doesnt mean I will have problems Monday when I'm traveling :lol

Not just that, FutureGM. I know what I propose is going to anger a lot of Cubans on this board, but...

I propose the repeal of the wet foot/dry foot law. It is discriminatory, especially against Haitians, and encourages activity in the Florida Straits comparable to the "coyotes" in the Mexican desert. So if you propose going after the enablers, I suggest we look in the mirror first, because with respect to some forms of illegal "legal" immigration, WE are at fault.

I agree that the wet foot/dry foot policy is the strangest enforced U.S. law on the books. It should have been done away with already.

I think that if there are illegal immigrants, both Cuba and Haiti have a fairly good excuse. Then again, all our grandparents (especially like mine considering they were Jews), went through all the legal routes and many spent their life savings on the boat over here and faced far greater restrictions.

No doubt. It's ludicrous.

And a lot of Europeans went to Cuba instead of the US, and had to endure Batista/Castro

-Italians immigrated during a different time when national protests were non-existent. They took a lot of crap back then and fought back with what tools they could. They also faced irrational nativism so thats not a good example.

-Asians have a different culture that lends to avoiding confrontation. But that doesnt mean they shouldnt have fought back when this country wronged them. Same nativism crap lead to terrible laws in the 19th and early 20th century. Many asians feel they as a group need to fight back and become politically stronger.

-Swedes?

I think the Irish had it worst of all, during the time when being Catholic was a big problem for people in the U.S.

Yes, they did. In the early days it was worse to be Irish than it was to be a slave.

but why arent we seeing any of those imigrants protesting??

Because the entire right wing isn't including them in their culture war.

but why arent we seeing any of those imigrants protesting??

Because it happened more than 100 years ago?

Or maybe just maybe the illegal imigrants that are here from those countries(Italy.Sweden,etc.) know that they are illegally here and are staying out of the middle of this goofy protest that has inspired me and my friends to go on a shopping spree May 1
