The incident occurred Sunday night near his home here, a source told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, which first reported the story on its Web site Monday morning.

The injury was minor, and Taylor participated in Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks' charity golf event Monday.

"My wife and I were the victims in an unfortunate incident last night, but we are both fine," Taylor said in a statement issued by the Dolphins. "I truly appreciate everyone's concern and am looking forward to enjoying a great day of golf at Derrick Brooks' charity event here in Tampa."

A three-time Pro Bowler, the 6-foot-6, 255-pound Taylor, 31, has recorded 540 tackles and 92? sacks in 140 games in his nine-year career, all with the Dolphins.

Taylor's wife, Katina, is the sister of Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas.

Good to see he is alright.

Great guy, it would suck to see him lose any kind of football talent over such a stupid incident.

Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor says he was attacked by a man in a case of unprovoked road rage.

But the attorney for the 24-year-old man who police arrested says he was protecting himself from Taylor.

It's a case of he-said, she-said, and police have not sorted out the mess that dominated the airwaves Monday.

Davie Police say Taylor and his wife, Katina, had stopped at State Road 84 and Flamingo Road around 9 p.m. Sunday when the football player saw a red Ford pickup truck backing up toward his vehicle.

Taylor, who lives in Davie, used his horn, a witness told police.

A man who Davie Police later identified as Redmond Charles Burns, 24, of Davie, continued west on Southwest Eighth Street, according to Lt. Bill Bamford.

Taylor also headed west on Southwest Eighth Street.

Another witness behind Taylor also turned west. With all three cars headed west, Taylor tried to pass the red pickup, which was driving slowly, about 10 mph. When the two vehicles were side by side, Burns then swerved and hit Taylor's vehicle, causing the football player to drive onto the side of the road at 13200 Southwest 7th Place, police said.

Taylor stopped, and so did Burns.

A passenger in Burns' truck, Timothy Foster, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, walked over to Taylor's vehicle and banged his hand on the car.

Police said Burns, who is white, got out of his truck and called Taylor a profane racial epithet and said, ``I'm going to . . . kill you.''

Police say Burns grabbed Taylor's shirt, ripped it, then retrieved a screwdriver from his truck and cut Taylor on his forearm, causing a small laceration.

It is unclear from police reports whether Taylor said anything.

Burns and Foster sped away. Taylor followed the truck, got a license number and dialed 911, police spokesman Lt. Bill Bamford said.

Taylor later identified Burns and Foster from their driver's license photos, and police arrested the two around 11:30 p.m., Bamford said.

Police said Burns fought with an arresting officer and tried to kick out the rear window of a police car. An officer pepper sprayed him, a report details. He is charged with resisting arrest with and without violence and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon as a hate crime, a first degree felony with a $10,000 bond.

He was being held late at Broward's main jail.

Foster, 24, of Fort Lauderdale, was given a citation for disorderly conduct, Bamford said.

Taylor released a statement Monday while in Tampa attending a charity golf tournament.

''My wife and I were the victims in an unfortunate incident last night, but we are both fine,'' he said.

Michael Metz, Burns' attorney, said his client was defending himself against Taylor. He said he expected his client to bond out of jail by Monday night or this morning.

''In the situation Redmond was in, anyone would have done what he did,'' Metz said. ``He had the legal right to defend himself, particularly against a man the size of Jason Taylor.''

Neighbors described Burns, who they say is a union electrician, as ''skinny'' and ''soft-spoken.'' The Associated Press reported that Burns is 5-11 and 168 pounds. Taylor, 31, is listed on the Dolphins' website as 6-6 and 255 pounds.

''He's not aggressive,'' Tom Edge, 43, said of Burns and added that Burns moved moved next door seven months ago with his pregnant wife. ``This just isn't characteristic of him.''
