May 17, 200620 yr Hey guys, a couple of questions about this years upcoming draft. How many picks do the Marlins have in the first round and what exact #s? I've heard that the high school talent is down this year and it will be a draft with alot of college selections. The lefty from UNC looks like he'll be the first pick. Anyways, who are some guys you think we should take a close look at? With all the pitchers we picked up in last years draft and in off season trades, I hope we can find us a college player that is a consistant hitter, who might be MLB ready is a year or two. Second base, Centerfield, and Catcher are a must for this years draft in my opinion.
May 17, 200620 yr The additional picks we have are just from the A.J Burnett to Toronto signning. As Toronto are in the top 15 picks, and because B.J Ryan (also signed by Toronto) had a higher FA rating than Burnett; we only got a comp pick at the end of round one, and the Blue Jay's third round selection. In terms of tracing top prospects, the 2007 draft will likely be the really interesting one, assuming we're picking at or near the top

May 18, 200620 yr Hopefully we'll get some legitimate hitting prospects. We're fooling ourselves if we think we have all the pieces to a good offense years fron now.
May 18, 200620 yr yea but this is a very pitching heavy draft with some projections having 26 pithchers in the first round and all the hitting prospects are considered weak and comp or 2nd rounders in a good draft

May 18, 200620 yr I'm fine with anyone that can help us win another World Series in 2008. If we get someone who will be ready by 2008, I'll be ecstatic. A little over one year of pro service and making the club is always a tough thing to do.
May 18, 200620 yr Currently would think about taking college closer in the Street/Hansen mould, given that the draft is so pitching strong again..... Then again there is no point in not taking the best available player, even if that happens to be another starting pitcher.

You need to take an impact player with your first pick.

He was a star last season...has had some arm issues thus far, but is still considered one of the top closer in the AL. Billy Beane's no dummy!

I mean in the draft; when you draft a closer, there is more of a risk than drafting another player. To me, Relief should be last on the check list. I'm not specifically talking about Street, just generalizing relief picks.
May 18, 200620 yr I would say you draft for Best player available. If we drafted 4 catchers and they were rated highest by the scouts so be it. If we draft 5 more pitchers so be it. You take the players your scouts tell you will make it and will be signable.
May 18, 200620 yr ... to a point, and we're fastily reaching the point with starting pitchers. If not already given the balance between pitchers and positional prospects.
May 18, 200620 yr We have some nice position prospects in the minors right now, but we're lacking that 'stud' Sanchez, Hayes, Campusano, Stokes, etc... I'd like to see a nice power hitting OF again. We had that with Willy and Hermida, but need to restock.
May 18, 200620 yr Of those only Sanchez is worthy of 'top prospect'. I'd like to see some middle of the field candidates
