Catcher for 2007.

Featured Replies

I know we shouldn't think about next year but I was wondering who might be our everyday catcher next year? I only see Treanor being our back up because he is pretty average. I doubt Olivo is coming back next year. His arm is great but thats pretty much it. Do we have a catcher in the minors who might start next year? Just wondering. I think about the future too much :D .

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early.

And there is no one in the minor leagues who will be ready by next year. Possibly Brett Hayes, but I doubt it.

Or someone steps it up in the minors. Olivo is easily replaceable, even if the best option is Treanor.

Who could step up? Anyone to look out for?

There is no one in the minors who could possibly step up. Hayes is ok, but come on. He's in Low A striking out at a high rate and only hitting around .260. He still has some work to do.

If anyone replaces either Treanor/Olivo it will come from free agency or more likely a trade

Wrong guy to ask. Brett Hayes is the only name that comes to mind, but he is still in (low?)A ball if I am not mistaken.

A few catchers(3 if you count the one fellow) taken in this years draft, but none of them will be up next year. But they do look good for sometime in the near future.

The best way to go would probably be top pitching prospect(Petit maybe) for top catching prospect whos nearly MLB ready right now, and should be next year. 1 for 1.

Olivo or Treanor, one a journeyman by trade the other by skill, are neither one the answer.

Argh... We havent had a good catcher since Pudge in 2003. Hopefully we will find a good one somewhere. Could we trade some of our minor league pitchers for a good Major League ready catcher?

Was the talk on Jeff Clement real(I myself think his #'s are slightly pedestrian for being an organizations top prospect) or just someones happy thoughts?

While I am not high on him, he is a lefty bat who could develop power. Once again, a 1 for 1 prospect-for-prospect swap could work out?

I think some of the guys we drafted today look like they could be major league ready in the very near future.

2007? 2008? 2009? Who might these players be?

Thanks.

Langley, despite being fresh out of HS, is reportedly good enough already defensively for MLB. According to one of the posts in the draft thread.

His bat just needs to come along. He might be rushed. But still not next year.

I am personally excited about Cousins, a college player who reminded scouts of Mark Kotsay. Lefty bat too.

To get anyone who's MLB ready in 2007 and has upside we'd probably have to give up one of our better young pitchers...like Olsen, Nolasco, or Johnson. I don't think there's any reason to do this for the 2007 season, when the team is likely to be a .450 team. Maybe a lower prospect, like Petit, for a prospect would work. But all in all, I'm happy standing pat with Olivo and Treanor for another season. It is too early to tell. I'm not ready to say Olivo is not the long term answer. His defense is good. If he can work on his hitting and get it up to .250 with some power, that works for me. And especially if his defense improves. It's rare to have an all star catcher like Pudge. This team can be competitive, even WS champs, in 2008-9, with someone like Charles Johnson, which is what Olivo may turn out to be.

Meh, besides the arm Olivo doesnt do anything overly well, and is slightly below average defensivey.

I'd say one of the kids we drafted to day is more likely to bust on the scene next season than for Olivo to be a long term answer at C for any team.

I'm not wild about Olivo. I'm just saying give him some time. Give all the rookies time. There's only one that stood out as not close to MLB ready, and that was Reed. The rest need more time to evaluate. One thing I would wager on is that nobody we drafted today ever plays even one inning in MLB as a catcher, much less "bust on the scene".

Well, Olivo is not a rookie. This is his 5th season of ball at the MLB level, and he's on his 4th team. Defensively he is slightly below average, and his bat is not that good.

Your right, maybe none of these kids sniff MLB(altho IMO Langley has a great shot if his bat shows up), Olivo should in no way shape or form be considered a long term option.

What happened to the Willingham experiment?

Don't be surprised to see him behind the plate so we get to see more of Borchard, Amezaga and Ross in the outfield.

At this point Olivo should be considered as a possible long term option. But let's give it another 200 AB's and then revisit the issue.

Can I ask why you think he should be considered a long term option?

Here we go again with the Olivo is below average defensively!

I wont be surprised if next year we go with the same catching tandem we got working now.
