Catcher for 2007.

Featured Replies

Well, Olivo is not a rookie. This is his 5th season of ball at the MLB level, and he's on his 4th team. Defensively he is slightly below average, and his bat is not that good.

Your right, maybe none of these kids sniff MLB(altho IMO Langley has a great shot if his bat shows up), Olivo should in no way shape or form be considered a long term option.

At this point Olivo should be considered as a possible long term option. But let's give it another 200 AB's and then revisit the issue.

Can I ask why you think he should be considered a long term option?

I didn't say he was the long term answer. I just said that he should be considered as the long term answer. I also said let's give it another 200 AB's. We really should give it another 2 years and 600 AB's and defense, and as Ralph says......I wouldn't be surprised to see the same catching tandem next year.

Gaby might get a shot eventually, who knows. Hayes won't be ready by next year's start. He'll be with the club in 08, if ever.

And this guy Coughlan supposedly could be a catcher if the club decides that.

Olivo is fine with me, I don't think he has done that bad of a job, neither has Treanor. They are not Pudge Rodriguezes, and we know that, but they have done a decent job. Olivo seems really good at throwing out runners, and has some pop in his bat, and Treanor knows the staff well and does a good job calling the game.

Now, if we are talking about getting a Hanley Ramirez' type player who catches, well good luck finding that guy.

Sabremetricially, he is. His defense has cost us more runs than it has prevented.

Okay. So show us the games. Which ones? What innings? What took place that casts the fault on Olivo?

There are two problems with stats. First, stats lie. Second, because too few variables are considered, conclusions drawn are by definition faulty and unreliable. Perhaps someday stats will have real value and can be taken seriously but until data gathering improves significantly it's a notch below voodoo.

But let's not get diverted from the statement at hand. Where and when has Olivo's defense cost us more runs than he's prevented. Games, innings, plays.

Show us or shut the f*** up.

Well considering I had a sabr guy look Olivo up, I dont have access to what games they were exactly.

But I will believe them, as SABR stats that say players are good defensively and bad defensively, thats the way they usually are.

So in other words you can't show us and all you can do is quote some other nimrod stathead who thinks he has all the answers. Now you use the word "usually", which means not always. So you mean these stats can be wrong?

Pathetic. I'll say it again, show us or shut the f*** up. It should be easy for you, you think you have all the answers. You've probably posted 200 times dumping on Olivo, insulting his play and abilities. So what games, where specifically? Prove your point.

I don't hate Olivo, but I think he's only going to be here for this year. If Treanor returns, it will be as a backup. I think everybody in the organization knows he's not a starter. Until someone from the minors claims the job, it'll probably be a cheap vet (like Olivo) holding down the fort.

the braves have a clout of catchers right now, they have to get rid of one of them, why not pick one of them up... as much as I dispise deals within the division

Treanor sucks. It's like having two pitchers in the line-up when he plays. Olivo has been ok and I wouldn't mind him sticking around as a back-up/platoon catcher.

Well, we can just hope that wont happen.

as long as they can be reliable for the pitchers and make them excel I could care less who's behind the plate

those two are doing a fine job and are both cheap making them a bit more interesting than a guy that's going to hit 2 more homers, have 1 less error and 10 pts better avg

I can't believe I'm going to agree with you in the end, but in this guy's defense Pecota has always pegged Olivo as a -1, -2 type guy at his position. I think it's a pretty reliable system at generalizing about defensive abilities, but it's not perfect due to the endless variables in baseball. It's even harder to judge because he's a catcher. If he was farther away from a neutral rating I'd spend time developing an argument, you know me, but I have no problem saying he is a pretty serviceable catcher all around after watching him. Defensively, he's top 10 in RF and throwing out base runners - even with a young staff which typically does not hold runners. That's pretty good.

Concerning the thread, I think he shows enough offensive promise to keep around another year..... but if he finishes with this .270/.315/.450 line, he is going to get a big payday. I'm looking at the NL West - Miguel Montero (Ari) or Navarro (LAD, Martin is not going anywehre). Either would be mandatory in a package for Dontrelle.

The most likely situation for a long term answer is through trade. Trading either Dontrelle, for several prospects, or prospect for prospect.

The Diamondbacks are one team with enough position player talent to trade for some of the Marlins pitching. However what is the likelihood that they'd be able to afford Dontrelle? The D'backs do have a nearly ready AA catcher in Miguel Montero. With Chris Snyder and Johnny Estrada both young catchers in the bigs. They can't use all 3, and toss in their HUGE surplus of premium hitting prospects, they become a very realistic suitor.

The Dodgers are in a similar situation with a plethora of position prospects, and only 8 spots in the major league lineup. The dodgers have young Russ Martin already getting his feet wet in the bigs, with Dioner Navarro on the DL. It only makes sense for the dodgers to trade a catcher to the Marlins, who will then move him on to the Mets, and eventually end up in San Diego. Thus continuing the Piazza/Loducca Overground Railroad.

The Most catching rich system in the league is the Atlanta Braves. While it may be unlikely for the Braves to help out a division foe, they also will need to divest themselves of their huge catching glut. Brian McCann is hitting over .340 for the big team. AA Catcher Jarrod Saltalamaccia is finally ending his season-long slump and recovering his title as Baseball's Best Catching Prospect, Bryan Pena is a serviceable backup catcher in the bigs already, and Max Ramirez is tearing up single A.

Sorry, i just wrote a whole article :)

Chris Snyder will probably get traded eventually. He can't be happy as a backup. Montero might also get traded.

Navarro is a good candidate for a trade, with Russ Martin already making the big leagues.

As far as the Braves, it looks like McCann will become their new franchise catcher for awhile. That means that Salty will end up on the trading block at some point.
